Most overrated player in the AFL currently?

Dev Smith. Supposedly he's outrageously talented but when does it all actually translate into being more than a bog average plodder who has trouble finding the pill?

None even us (Essendon) supporters rate him.

He's a 30 year old, high draft pick 'star' whos played forward in top four teams his entire career that's kicked 165 career goals.

By contrast, Alex Sexton was pick 88, has played his entire career in one of the worst teams of all time, is frequently dropped and has 145 career goals, despite being 3 years younger and playing fewer games.

Guys like Jack Lonie (who noclub wanted) and was nearly delisted has a higher goal, disposal and tackle average than Rohan, despite playing in far worse teams.

Rohan is the definition of overrated, ok season notwithstanding.
Dahlhaus has been more disappointing in the front half for us than Rohan, there is a large group of Geelong fans (of whom I’m one) that believes he’s not justifying his position atm.....I’d say he’s getting a game on reputation alone & is at present “overrated”.

Burgoyne. An excellent player, who's stood up numerous times when it's mattered, but his list of accolades shows his standing in the game, a Robert Horry career. 400 games, four premierships, a single All Australian so long ago that Joel Bowden was named centre half back and I doubt anyone cared. Now that he's hit the 400 milestone you can see it happening, the pundits falling over themselves with the hyperbole... I saw someone say this week that he was as important as any Hawthorn player to its success in 2013-15, which of course is utter nonsense.

You just know he's going straight in to the HOF as early as he can and I'm sorry, but I just don't think he's at that level. 400 games and four flags is nothing to sneeze at, sure, but there's plenty of time for him to be inducted for what he was: a classy player, with a sense of the occasion who won a swag of premierships and played a stack of games. Wayne Johnston had to wait nearly 25 years.

2013 PF still hurts huh?
24 & 3 to win the game. Silk is all class. Wonderful clearance player who dominated whenever he went into the middle.

Had to reinvent himself into a defender due to his knee. Which limited his midfield time. The amount of games he has won us is crazy. 2012 and 2013 PF’s especially

He is not overrated this season. He has improved massively. Nobody is saying that his career has been great.

He has the lowest average marks of any current player with more than 40 games.
Second lowest uncontested possessions of any current player with more than 40 games.
How is that possible for such a big guy?

This is why Gawn and Grundy are better players, they move around the field, find free space and are not useless outside the centre bounce.
And yet Naitanui has heaps more CP, tackles, higher hitout to advantage than those guys....they have different roles for their teams. WC rely on Naitanui bullocking because the mids are too weak, which is a coaching flaw in itself

Commentators keep banging on about the three headed monster at Geelong...which is Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron and Gary Rohan!

Umm, 1 of those is not like the others.

Commentators and the media also keep talking about Rohan as a star and lauding defenders who manage to keep him quiet.

People do realise that he is a 30 year old pick 6 who has managed 150 odd games. Or that he has accumulated 7 Brownlow votes in his entire career. Or that he has never had 25 possessions in a game. Or that he has never kicked more than 25 goals in a season despite being a permanent forward in a top 4 side.

He averages less than 10 touches over his whole career, 1 goal per game and despite his pace, doesn't even offer anything defensively (averaging less than 2 tackles at Geelong).

Last year was arguably his best ever season and he still had 4 games where he had 6 or less touches and no goals. 2 of those were finals, yet he seems to escape any sort of criticism (let alone be dropped).

Compare him to say Paul Puopolo, who was a mature age state league player that was considered a fringe player his entire career and got a game solely for his defensive effort. Yet, Puopolo got more of the ball and has so far still kicked more goals than the 'star' Gary Rohan (obviously i won't compare defensive stats cos that's unfair).

You also realise that there is arguably no player in the competition who’s failures and inconsistent nature get brought up nearly as much as those of Gary Rohan don’t you?

He has also bumped his numbers up from about 0.9 goals a game to 1.4, his contested/uncontested possession ratio is now 1:1 rather than 1:1.5, his contested marking is an over 1 per game, it was about 0.6 per game at Sydney. His goal assists per game is 0.6 where it was 0.4 at Sydney and he’s even performed in a final in amongst a handful of failures. Even his pitiful Brownlow total is 4 points at Geelong in 50 games, 3 points at
Is he a gun? No. Is he a threat to other teams? Yes. Has he improved? Yes.

I’d say given the volume of criticism he cops he’s rated just where he should be.

There are many arguments you can make to defend him.

citing 0.25 per cent of his matches is not one of them.

I’m not sure whether this is just perception or not because to be honest there probably isn’t a team I watch less than Essendon, and when he was at the dogs I hardly watched them either.

but has Jake stringer ever on a consistent basis SINCE what was obviously a very good 2015 season, delivered regularly on his talent? Listening to the way he’s spoken about in almost hushed tones and that God awful BT nickname it seems he is a player who perpetually looks like he’s about to bust games opens but can’t quite do it

On Bigfooty sure, but amongst the general public, in the media and by commentators he is portrayed as a star player and has been for a long time.

He is often included when discussing 'key players' when in reality, he has mostly been a fringe player. Also, an average footy fan would know who Gary Rohan is but you name any other fringe small forward and you'll get blank looks. I believe that is attributable to him being overrated.

those stats are absolutely comical

he'll break the 25 goals this year, unfortunately. but that is just putrid. i don't think anyone rates him though really, other than for the awards for most punchable face and best at walking out on his family and kids and cheating with the club physio.

I like your quest to summarise Burgoyne’s strengths and put them in some perspective but I think you have your final judgement wrong. These guys who can play multiple positions really well, have brilliant all round skills and can produce big performances on the biggest stages, they are extremely valuable, imo. I have missed large chunks of Burgoyne’s career, and he has gone on well past his best, but to me he is a proper footballer.

For the record some of my over-rated players, according to the only over-rating that matters, their contract and roles with their teams:

Dangerfield - really poor kick on the burst and not much of a player when not on the burst
Blicavs - sort of can do a few roles just ok and if he is your worst player, no problems, if he is a two time b&f…
Cripps - even at his best I had some knocks on him esp for his lack of damaging disposal and defensive exploitability, but nearly fell off my chair when Blues gasve him this recent 6 year contract on $750k pa.
Fyfe - wins some great contest but the next bit is the issue, and I think this has held Freo back a bit
Dylan Shiel - another who can burst clear from contests but couldn’t kick a bad habit in a sanitarium.

Admittedly though, it isn’t easy to know exactly how good players are as a casual observer.

The media bring it up all the time. Anytime he’s having a good game or at half time they go to the lab or whatever you hear the phrase ‘now we all know he’s a player who has a reputation for being very quiet or going missing in big games’ routinely.

he certainly hasn’t been a fringe player with us and let’s be honest, the fact that he’s noticeably among the fastest players of the last decade is one of the primary things that makes him
Known. His kicking is very accurate so he’s a player that DOES make the most of the limited opportunities he creates and as a small forward he is a bit of a point of difference to other small forwards in that, again despite not doing it all that often, he CAN take a mark.

He’s had a nice run lately but is held in a similar vain as De Goey.

I haven't heard much of the criticism to be honest but I think you are right in saying that his 'attributes' are the main contributor to him being rated more highly than he should be - its his 'excitement' and what he is 'capable of' rather then what he actually produces.

He is having an improved season though - ill give him that but I also believe that you couldn't have an easier time as a medium forward in the current Geelong set up. You've got 2 superstar key forwards who demand the best 3 defenders on their own. Also Hawkins is probably the best forward in the game at setting others up. You've also got a tonne of good mids and you regularly win. Its probably the perfect storm for him to finally kick more than 25 goals in a season.

I totally agree with all of that there are just some players that need the right circumstances in which to flourish or have any sort of impact - I think of a guy like Chris Dawes or alongside him Leigh Brown who couldn’t possibly hope to carry a forward line but while Travis Cloke was at or near the peak of his powers they actually had roles to play in the Pies forward line

Definitely going worse than Rohan. Didn't pick him because nobody has rated him for a long time and he is never really 'pumped up' by the media. I too am unsure why he keeps getting picked, particularly when you have younger players performing better and being dropped. The only thing I can think of is he plays a role that those promising younger players can't fill.
