A player named Peter West alledgedly had 103 possessions, whilst playing for South Melbourne back around the early 1900's.

Was famous for his dashes out of defence, during which he'd handball over the heads of oncoming players and retrieve it a la Mick Conlan, often capping the effort with long, raking goals. Truly a man before his time.

Funny part is, you could just change Joel Bowden to Chad Cornes and not too many would disagree!

Except the statisticians - have a look at Chad Cornes' contested possessions / hardball gets / contested marks and get back to me will you?

(for the record, i think Joel Bowden is not a bad player at all)

I would live to know where I would find these stats on the great and mighty internet! I think it would be closer than you give him credit for.

I don't think reliable stats have been kept for that long. Pre 1930 I think a lot of "games played/goals scored" stats are derived from Geelong footy club records kept pretty much for internal club purposes. Don't know whern the League started to accumulate a centrally organised suite of properly defined stats, but I think it was the mid 1990's.

I believe Bob Skilton was reported as having 44 kicks in a game around 1970. Handball stats were not available.

I reckon Richmonds's Joel Bowden gets close to 50 posessions every week. All in the back half and all uncontested.

John Barker had 50 possessions and 22 marks playing on the wing for the Lions reserves in the QAFL in 1997.
