What better way to start our year of redemption than by playing our furry friends at their cheat ground? The Furies always bring out the best in us Demons, and even though TJASTA doubled the number of posts of anyone else in the thread, the thread impacted Proper Gander greatly…

ROUND 1.png

The match itself was a ripper for us – a seven goal first quarter set us up for a fairly cruisy 32-point win. _Cayz_ backed up his great match thread content with 100DT points, while Tarks and cats2rise kicked 3 snags each.

VOTES:

3 - _Cayz_ [28 touches, 6 marks, 1 goal]
2 - DemonJim [15 touches, 10 tackles, 2 goals]
1 - Quivorir [22 touches, 7 marks, 1 goal]

I had served my punishment for miscounting the number of players on our fine squad, and returned just in time for the first of our two matches against the Bombers – what a treat! The match thread was pretty fun, with a fresh-faced Antonio BlueVein and an ellipsis-impaired WaynesWorld19 filling the place with glittery spam.

Our own rookie was getting the hang of things…

ROUND 2.png

The Bombers jumped out of the gates with purpose, piling on seven first quarter goals, but we weren’t to be left behind, trailing by just 6 points at half time. Tarks found his kicking boots after half time, kicking some important goals to keep us in it, while Quivorir started to find plenty of qleather.

A tense final quarter saw us prevail by 10 points, with a combination of an all-round team effort from us and Bombers’ inaccuracy helping us take the points.

VOTES:

3 - Quivorir [20 touches, 3 marks, 1 goal]
2 - Yakker [16 touches, 1 goal]
1 - Tarkyn_24 [3 goals]

There’s no greater contrast in qooty than changing a Bombers match thread for a Dragons one. It’s like leaving Revolver at 3am buzzing on pingers and going to sit in the State Library.

Despite the contrast, it was a nice change of pace, and the banter was generally even and in good spirit. Thanks to AceAndy and cammo6556 in particular.

Well, mostly in good spirit…

ROUND 3.png

In the match itself, we started very strongly, with five first quarter goals (to individual goalkickers) setting us up for the rest of the match. We were never threatened from that point, and eventually pushed on to a comfortable 46-point win.

Quivorir continued his impressive early season form, racking up 27 possessions, while cooney was dominant across centre half forward. I’m sure my 1 goal 2 behind contribution was really important too…

VOTES:

3 - cooney [23 touches, 6 marks, 2 goals]
2 - Quivorir [27 touches, 1 goal]
1 - sausageroll [17 touches, 3 goals]

Another quality week of banter awaited us in Round 4, taking on TheInjuryFactory and pantskyle ‘s mob. Blows were traded and rumours of Papa Juggs ‘ death circulated. Good, wholesome fun. I particularly enjoyed contributions from comewhatmay – she’s pretty brunchy.

At this point in the season, it’s worth noting that our VC was still in his ‘multi’ phase…

ROUND 4.png

Anyway, the SIM continued to bend to our will and I worked out that, when playing full-forward, it’s helpful to kick goals. Proper Gander was monstrous in the ruck contest, and was assisted on the ground by DemonJim, _Cayz_ and Quivorir. We managed to overturn a 41-point half time deficit to prevail by 24 points, establishing ourselves on top of the ladder.

VOTES:

3 - Proper Gander [22 touches, 9 hitouts, 5 tackles, 2 goals]
2 - manangatang [6 goals]
1 - DemonJim [23 touches, 8 tackles, 1 goal]

1. Cats2Rise Award.png

Did you know that, in Qooty (as in life), kicking goals is a good thing? Did you know that kicking goals helps you WIN matches of Qooty? Well I didn’t until this season, but boy did I find out!

And did you know that the person on our team that kicks the most goals wins a special award named after the player who has played the third-highest number of games for our club? Again, this is news to me.

Well, given I plonked myself at full forward (sacrificially of course), it’s little surprise that I actually won it, which I’m super happy and only slightly embarrassed about.

So congratulations me I guess?

Hey I just got votes for some game!

2. Defender Of The Year.png

Defence is the cornerstone of any successful Qooty club. I read that in a manual somewhere, but I lost it and I think Proper Gander may have burned it.

But anyway, a solid and miserly defence is super-important. This is why we recognise the contributions and tight-arsery of our backline brethren through this special award, won by such luminaries as Headless.

First, let’s have a quick look at our most commonly named back six for Season 28…

DEFENDERS.png

Solid as a rock, isn’t it? Some might say you could grate cheese on their foreheads. I wouldn’t say that though, because it doesn’t make any sense.

Anyway, after careful deliberation I’m pleased to announce that the winner of the Season 28 Defender of The Year for Mt. Buller is none other than Van_Dyke!

Congratulations mate.

4. Rookie Of The Year Award.png

Our rookie crop this year consisted of three posters – the much-feted Adroyo, sausageroll and a young Hawks supporting whippersnapper - moginie.

While Adroyo lit up the boards throughout the season and sausageroll continued his ongoing plight for the EKA, the award must go to the well-rounded Mt. Buller Man, moginie. I’ve enjoyed his posting in match threads and particularly noted his love of fine food and music.

His work on the field from the Half Forward Flank has been mighty impressive, and he’s a very deserving winner of this award for Season 28. Congratulations mate.

Round 5.png

It was Headless ‘ 350th game, and we set the league alight with fanfare in the lead-up to the huge occasion.

ROUND 5.png

We took the team bus up to Las Vegas to tackle the Bears, who were yet to jam a rock up their bums and enter hibernation. The match thread was full of healthy banter; Callums_Guns was starting to hit his straps, and took it up to AuntyBlindEye and JoshWoodenSpoon.

The match was an absolute belter – 5 goals each at quarter time, 11 goals each at half time and 19 goals each at three quarter time. The Bears started the last quarter strongly, and we found ourselves behind right to the 24th minute.

Enter akkaps – the big fella stepped up and snagged a last minute goal to nudge us in front just before the final siren went. The game saw a HAM performance from DemonJim, while deaneus had a day out. A very pleasing win all in all!

VOTES:

3 -
DemonJim (33 touches, 6 tackles, 4 goals)
2 - deaneus (28 touches, 2 goals)
1 - Callums_Guns (26 touches, 8 marks, 3 tackles)

We snuck back home to take on the anarchistic Gumbies. Bugger knows what teamsheet shenanigans they were up to that week, although I recall Barrybran playing so it couldn’t have been too bad.

ROUND 6.png

At this point, being 5-0 was a millstone slung around our necks. So it was with great relief that the all-knowing and merciful SIM decided that we should be smote in a relatively minor way.

To be fair, we never looked in the contest all day – Tarks was too busy eating Atomic Tomato Samboys with the flavour sachet, and brucetiki was where the ball ain’t.

In spite of strong showings from Yakker and Callums_Guns, a 23-point loss in the end felt about right.

VOTES:

3 -
Yakker [26 touches, 1 goal, 96 DT points]
2 - DemonJim] [18 touches, 6 tackles, 1 goal]
1 - manangatang [4 goals]

Still smarting from our feeble loss to the Gumbies, we traversed to some weird arse stadium to take on the Wonders. Callums_Guns went batshit crazy, notching 210 posts to ward off any potential threat from our opposition.

I did enjoy some of Bloodied52 ‘s work, while the Brunchers (Elton Johns Wig and Dingster) represented as per usual.

It’s worth noting that this was the scene of some of @headless’ best work…

ROUND 7.png

Anyway, onto the game. It was a tight affair right through the first half, although somehow I found my kicking boots (left in @cooney’s bag, no doubt) and we took a two goal lead into the last quarter and finished up saluting by 24 points. It was nice to be back on the winners list.

_Cayz_ looked like he had regained his early season form, while Callums_Guns, Quivorir and DemonJim were again strong contributors.

VOTES:

3 -
Callums_Guns [30 touches, 3 goals]
2 - _Cayz_ [31 touches, 7 marks, 1 goal]

Playing the Roys is like putting on that comfortable pair of slippers at the end of a long Mt. Buller day. Who could hate the Roys, with TedDougChris, Mobbs, JackNah_8 and fitzroybowiedog bringing the love?

Headless was his normal engaged self…

ROUND 8.png

The SIM normally hates the Roys, so you tend to be able to fancy yourself for a win. This time, however, was different. The Roys jumped us early, but we managed to kick seven second quarter goals to pull ahead at half time.

From that point, however, Mooch went into beast mode. He ended up kicking 10 goals in a Plugger-style performance that left us a little shellshocked. Callums_Guns, Quivorir, cooney and Proper Gander flew the flag for us, but we left Brunswick Junction Oval vanquished by 46 points.

VOTES:

3 -
Callums_Guns [20 touches, 10 marks, 1 goal]
2 - Quivorir [24 touches, 5 marks]
1 - cooney [16 touches, 6 marks, 3 goals]

ROUND 8 LEADERBOARD.png

At the halfway point of the home and away season, Quivorir still leads all comers, although there's been some movement from Callums_Guns in particular...

5. Captains Award.png

This award is given to the player deemed the best clubman by the captain; whether it be via providing engaging banter, going the extra mile or putting a hand up to help out. It takes a bit of work to ensure Mt. Buller remains a league-leading club and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a fantastic leadership group.

But leadership in our club comes from all corners, and I like to reward those who put effort in week in week out to keep us an engaging and powerful club in match threads.

I’ve noticed one particular player that has done a power of work in match threads ensuring we represent; he’s sought engagement from all of us and has worked hard to get the best out of everyone.

That’s why I’m pleased to award this season’s Captains Award to Callums_Guns – congratulations mate, and thanks for your work this season.

3. ETH Award.png
The Eth Award is named after one of the greatest captains, player and teammate of this great club. Introduced a number of seasons ago, the Eth Award is voted on by players and is an accolade to be incredibly proud of. Past winners include Tarks, Van_Dyke, Oddhawk and Yakker.

Voting for this year’s award was done individually by PM, and once I tallied the votes I came upon an embarrassing conclusion. You chose this guy…

3. Eth Award Winner.png

But of course I accept, and I’m most proud to. I honestly think we’ve got the best squad of players in this damn league, and we’re working to make it even better next season. Keep hitching your snowmobiles to the Demons for Season 29.

Round 9.png

We were back in the altitude-rich comforts of the Snow Dome and taking on the Royals, a bunch of scruffy little puppy dogs. The Filth Wizard and CakeEater gave us plenty of stick, but Corndog, Callums_Guns and Tarkyn_24 were a force of nature for us.

Meanwhile, Jum found the time to take us on a trip down memory lane…

ROUND 9.png

But onto the match…

After kicking five first quarter goals, we choked up a little in the second quarter and were fortunate to only be trailing by 19 points. The Royals had managed 18 scoring shots to our 9, with only Tarks’ accuracy keeping us in it.

However, like all good sides we responded strongly in the third stanza, with dominance from Proper Gander, Tarks and myself providing the spark. This helped us to an eventual 30-point win, as we established our place on the top of the ladder.

The game featured some incredible on-field performances, with winners across all lines (including _Cayz_, Callums_Guns, Proper Gander, Van_Dyke and Tarks).

VOTES:

3 -
Proper Gander (23 hitouts, 29 touches, 2 goals)
2 - _Cayz_ (29 touches, 14 marks, 2 goals)
1 - Tarkyn_24 (7 touches, 6 goals straight)
