Round 10.png

We took up an invite to enter the subterranean vault of the Rats in Round 10, and as usual we ventured into their domain with a sense of trepidation. I guess it’s a natural defence mechanism against philreich ‘s jokes and their general love of kombucha.

It was a respectful yet fun match thread, with a good even contribution across the board.

Corndog was up to his usual tricks…

ROUND 10.png

This was an all-time classic home and away match of Qooty. We were right up against it all day – our Captain only had three kicks and our ruck was subbed out early. In spite of that, we never gave up - we trailed by 23 points at quarter time, 19 points at half time and 13 points at three quarter time.

Our defence was incredible all game - Oddhawk, cats2rise and Van_Dyke were as aggressive and miserly as unfed junkyard dogs.

Then came the epic last quarter, where we closed the gap and even led with just 7 minutes of game time remaining. Our heroic but weary defence had one too many forward 50 entries to defend, and a last gasp SarahSmiles goal drew scores level. And that was it – we had to settle with sharing the points.

VOTES:

3 -
Oddhawk [22 touches, 10 marks]
2 - cats2rise [23 touches, 10 marks]
1 - Yakker [20 touches, 4 tackles, 1 goal]

Will Richard_Cranium be let out of his cage for the coaches award?
Not sure - did you remember to ring the nursing home and see if he was available? Last heard he was amidst a seven-week game of strip bingo...

Round 11.png

For Round 11, we ventured to The Eyrie to see if we could continue to remain atop the Season 28 ladder. It’s always fun to take on the Hawks – they’ve got a great balance of aggression and clever banter.

The opposition served up quality via Agent93, NaturalDisaster, Biggie and Loonerty, and we even found time to talk about Princess Diana!

ROUND 11.png

It had become a pattern for us to start games slowly, and this was no exception. The Hawks piled on five first quarter goals and we were left to catch up. Luckily for us, Proper Gander, moginie, cooney and _Cayz_ stepped up and carried us to a comfortable but hard-fought 5-goal win.

VOTES:

3 -
Proper Gander [16 hitouts, 25 touches, 4 tackles]
2 - moginie [20 touches, 6 marks, 2 goals]
1 - _Cayz_ [16 touches, 4 goals]

Sounds a lot like my experience with Matera92 in Vegas

What a match thread. 93 pages and 2,312 posts. If you like canned processed meat, camel jokes and seedy innuendo this is one to revisit. Antonio BlueVein and Callums_Guns traded blows, typing their hands to stumps in the process.

From my point of view, this post from DemonJim may well have been the highlight…

ROUND 12.png

Similarly to the first encounter we had with the Bombers, the game was entertaining and close. We led by 16 points at three quarter time thanks to some quality but inaccurate work in front of goals from Tarks and myself.

Despite hitting the post more times than someone who hits posts for a living, we held on for a 9-point win, which turned out to be exactly equal to the number of extra scoring shots we had. lanky_wes stepped up with a BOG performance, and was ably supported by DemonJim, brucetiki and Quivorir.

VOTES:

3 -
lanky_wes [28 touches, 11 marks, 5 tackles]
2 - DemonJim [24 touches, 4 tackles, 2 goals]
1 - Quivorir [24 touches, 8 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal]

To be honest, we all needed to have our souls cleansed after our Round 12 clash, but we had to front up against the Wonders. Bloodied52, U2tigers and Dingster provided plenty of good banter content, while the Bruncher (Elton Johns Wig) kept throwing darts.

As usual, things took a bit of a wrong turn at some point…

ROUND 13.png

As for the match, it’s probably best to just say it wasn’t our day. We seemed not to kick one goal to a particular end of the Wonders’ cheat ground (likely due to some magnet system they’ve set up), and they managed to roll us by 37 points.

In a losing side, Callums_Guns game was admirable, while _Cayz_, Yakker and cats2rise fought hard.

VOTES:

Round 14.png

The Dragons had come off a bruising Round 13 encounter with the Bombers, so were mostly tucked in the foetal position in our match thread. With AceAndy trying to grow the game of Qooty overseas, the task of actual posting was left to us.

This of course allowed us to be at our insular best, which suits us just fine. Especially when the attempts at interaction were met with the likes of this…

ROUND 14.png

The match was a classic encounter – one that will be remembered for many seasons due to one key moment. It started as a tight tussle, before the Dragons managed to jump ahead by around 40 points in the third quarter.

As had become the pattern, we managed to peg the deficit back slowly, and took the lead in the 14th minute of the last quarter. However, the Dragons hit back and led by 4 points with just 1.5 minutes remaining.

Enter Headless – the man; the myth; the legend. He stepped onto the field from the bench, wrenched the ball free and slammed home a goal in the 25th minute of the match to seal (and steal) a famous victory for the Demons – a win by 4 points.

He’s done it again!

VOTES:

3 -
Yakker [21 touches, 4 tackles, 2 goals]
2 - Proper Gander [14 hitouts, 19 touches, 5 tackles]
1 - sante [19 touches, 10 marks]

International round took Qooty teams to exciting and stimulating locations around the world. And it took us to ****ing Wellington. We’d lost to the Gumbies earlier in the season, so we knew not to take the game lightly. Our rookie came prepared!

ROUND 15.png

The Gumbies had copped criticism for being inactive in match threads in Round 14, so we were expecting them to respond. Instead, some Bombers reject was their second-highest poster. But this doesn’t bother us, because it allows us to do what we do best – introversion!

Richard_Cranium was clearly buying into the Headless hype at this point; he decided it was a good idea to drag me early and put Headless in at full forward. Still, if it weren’t for our inaccurate kicking we might have won, but instead we managed to lose by one point.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

VOTES:

Round 16.png

The final round of the regular season sent us to our home base to take on the Bears, who were still in the hunt for an unlikely finals berth. I’d like to think of this part of our season as our ‘heavy training load’ phase. We were already guaranteed a top 4 spot, and were fully aware of the minor premiership curse.

In the match thread, the Corndog was up to his usual tricks – playing (and dominating) mind games with his feckless rivals…

ROUND 16.png

It was a game we weren’t really wanting to win – the curse of the minor premiership hung heavy on our minds and the all-knowing SIM was aware of this. We trailed for virtually all of the match and eventually succumbed by two points. Condog’s heroics in the match thread were emulated on the ground, but we were keeping our powder dry for what was to come.

VOTES:

3 -
cooney [18 touches, 5 marks, 4 goals]
2 - _Cayz_ [20 touches, 4 marks, 1 goal]
1 - Callums_Guns [19 touches, 4 marks, 1 goal]

Ah finals. The smell of the grass is always fresher at this time of year – it’s when our club does its best work.

A match thread with the Furies is always an experience – it’s like bantering with a pissed off echidna that smells like a decomposing water vole. As usual, the match thread got a little weird at certain points…

QUALIFYING FINAL.png

… but it was an enjoyable week with Wacky Tiger , TJASTA , Ned_Flanders and team.

Of course we were relying on our recent history of making the Furies our bitches, so you can imagine our surprise when the SIM made this a close and troublesome battle. We held a slender lead for most of the match, although the Furies never stopped pushing us – our lead was 9 points at quarter time, 2 points at half time and we trailed by 4 points at three quarter time.

sausageroll was having a belter of a match, while brucetiki ran amok. After JackBero goaled in the 20th minute, we trailed by 7 points and things looked grim. But a behind to Callums_Guns , a goal to Yakker and an inspired buzzer beater from brucetiki stole back the lead and helped us advance to our third prelim in a row.

VOTES:

3 -
sausageroll [13 touches, 2 tackles, 4 goals]
2 - DemonJim [8 touches, 11 tackles]
1 - Callums_Guns [24 touches, 5 marks]

Three prelims in a row – who’d have thunk it? Things were certainly looking up around the club, and we had our sights set on our second grand final appearance in three seasons.

The opponent was our finals bunnies (but bunch of good blokes) the Sin City Swamprats. It was a great match thread (after the merciful mod clean-up), and was probably the one I enjoyed the most for the season. Tarks was working his magic on some solid Hootie & The Blowfish references…

PRELIM FINAL.png

After JoshWoodenSpoon invested a bit of time in trolling our sim posting, we got underway officially at around 5:15pm on Sunday. We jumped out of the blocks early, leading by seven goals at half time – at one point _Cayz_ snagged three goals in a couple of minutes. It was brutal and beautiful in equal measure.

While the Swampies showed their fight in the last half, we managed to hold them off to win by 21 points, securing another Grand Final berth!

VOTES:

3 -
_Cayz_ [27 touches, 4 tackles, 3 goals]
2 - Callums_Guns [29 touches, 6 marks, 1 goal]
1 - DemonJim [23 touches, 5 marks, 1 goal]
