A WA gun who has emerged as a frontrunner for the Dockers’ mid-season vacancy has opened up on his heartache after missing out in last year’s draft, while watching his West Coast cousin live out his AFL dream.

Subiaco product Robert Hansen Jr is the first to admit his last year didn’t go to plan, blaming his own inconsistency which resulted in zero clubs getting in contact ahead of national and rookie selection.

Mid-season draft interest for Perth forward Jaiden Hunter has increased, with another Victorian club entering the race for his services in the hours leading up to Wednesday’s event.

Hunter, 22, had already garnered interest from Essendon and Richmond, with the Tigers holding two picks (No.4 and 13) while the Bombers would need him to slip to No.9 if they are to draft him.

Draft late mail: Maric set for Eagles, more Hunter interest

AFL Mid-Season Draft: Perth forward Jaiden Hunter gets interest from third Victorian club

Recruiters from several clubs watched Hunter boot five goals in the Demons’ upset win over South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval at the weekend, increasing his chances of being picked up on Wednesday afternoon.

The West Australian understands a third club has expressed interest, with Geelong, Hawthorn and North Melbourne the other Victorian clubs to hold picks in the draft.

Hunter has bolted into contention after returning from two injury-riddled seasons to kick 11 goals in three league games for the Demons, including four against West Coast.

The former WA under-18 forward missed all of last season after rupturing his ACL in a practice match last season, before returning with 12 goals in three reserves games to push him into the league side.

Meanwhile, Claremont forward Jack Buller has been interviewed by six to seven clubs in the past fortnight and is expected to be the first West Australian to be drafted.

Victorian Ryan Maric is set to land at West Coast with the first pick after a promising start for Gippsland Power and Box Hill Hawks.

Buller is believed to have been interviewed by West Coast, who hold just one pick, and still could land there but it is understood to be unlikely.

The Eagles only have one pick in the draft, meaning they have to make a choice between Maric and Buller despite being keen on both.

We should 100% go lowson. But we won't, we will pick up an obscure selection as usual and delist them at the end of the year after playing 0 games.

There's a reason no AFL club is going to touch him now.

He'd be a witches hat at AFL level.

Yes, he might kick a goal or two a game, but think the Menzel's x 1000.

There's no bigger change in roles than occurs between a small/medium forward at VFL level vs what they have to do at AFL level.

Look at Paul Curtis, he kicks bags regularly at VFL level, is often really deep forward, around the goals constantly and one of the key focal points. Basically suburban footy/junior football structures. His entire mentality is to kick goals and get on the scoreboard.

At AFL level he would spend 70% of his time outside of the F50 and 90% of his running output would be to put on pressure or link up in chains of possessions 50-80m from goal.

Kayne Turner kicked 4 on the weekend and he's barely kicked multiple goals in a game at AFL level for 4 years.

It's why most of them struggle so much with the transition and change in game style.

Lowson doesn't have anywhere near the engine or footspeed to be a top line medium forward at AFL level.

At absolute best, he's a Sam Lloyd type, but I think Lloyd was way more mobile and had a much bigger engine.

Lowson is an extremely good suburban footballer only imo. He's very much like Ben McKinley.

At 28 years of age, it would be a pointless pick other than rewarding someone that joined the VFL program 12 weeks ago.

Well if I trust anyone on here it's you my man. Cheers for the response. Hard to argue with that.

WAFL Team of the Week – Round 7

HALF-BACK FLANK – JACK AVERY (Perth)
The 20-year-old is quickly becoming one of the more exciting and damaging attacking defenders in the competition and on the back of the form he's showing, it wouldn’t surprise to see an AFL club give him an opportunity in this week's mid-season draft. At 190cm, he's also a good size to do some work in the air but it's with the ball in hands he's making his mark. He had another 25 touches, eight marks and three tackles in the win against South Fremantle.

How much do these MSD picks get paid for 6 months? Maybe that's part of our consideration. I'd rather re-sign a young player than take a punt on a MSD pick if that's the difference in terms of the cap.

Tonight's MSD, as with all drafts, will just be Shifter saying "I love this pick, the boy with the (insert witty description of their key attribute e.g. dancing feet for Jy) after every single selection.
"I love this pick for the Kangaroos, the boy with the sausage arms, he'll struggle to hold a tackle but he gives great cuddles. He played most of his junior footy at Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre, so while he doesn't know much about AFL he sure knows what it's like to be down the bottom of the pool, gasping for air and trying to survive. I think he'll play straight away"
