Rumour Multiple GWS players are set to be suspended to start the 2025 season after distasteful costumes and skits from their post-season function

I was tentatively okay with the GWS players being punished but I thought the suspensions were too harsh and I was worried it would quickly go down a slippery slope and it has fast. America's a 50/50 chance of electing a fascist in a couple of days, going by AFL standards they should be suspending anybody who cosplays as Trump yet I can guarantee they won't (and they shouldn't).
Besides which, if I remember anything from HR training (apart from falling asleep), for something to be workplace misconduct, someone actually has to be upset about it?

In the case of GWS, they managed to upset the venue staff - great job, guys - and so there actually was an aggrieved party. Dressing up as Osama - presumably to take the piss out of the guy - doesn't sound like the kind of thing that would actually provoke offence. It's not like the guy went and re-enacted the Twin Towers going down.

If he reenacted that who the **** would be emotionally traumatised now. We’ve all seen the real footage a million times. It’s pathetic we even have to debate any of this shit. The fragile state of mind of people these days that get affected but these nothing incidents is laughable

I thought he self reported, so he offended himself I guess?

People can complain about 'The world gone woke' rar rar rar but even the ump knew it was in poor taste. He travelled to the venue with the costume in a bag and then wore it for like half an hour before quickly taking it off. Come on guys, why even put yourself in that position in the first place? Of all the people of the 2000's you choose THAT person?

You deserve the penalty just on stupidity. I'm not even offended by it, I just mean YOU KNOW the kinda social climate we're in these days and you're still stupid enough to do it.

Yeah, I think it was the rape stuff that really tipped it over the edge.

Australia.

A country where you turn on the news and it’s enough to send you into a spiral of sadness with every headline. A country where people minded their own business, a country where secrecy and love thy neighbour was promoted. The key word WAS.

Fast forward to today and bodily autonomy is out the window, satire is dead and comedy is finished. A country where people are cradled into small shoebox homes and confined to misery.

Thanks to the miserable, hateful group for sending society back to the Stone Age. Private parties now are the business of everyone in society. Mad Mondays are now dead, in fact soon work drink parties and any dress parties will all be gone. If we can’t even satirise things that go on in society, what can we joke about these days. In fact, why even congregate with your friends to celebrate anything, just sit like hermits within your own shoebox home miserable and sad.

Setting a further low, we now punish leaders of a football club. In a competition where the leaders running the show fail to show any leadership when it comes to accountability on the rules that constantly change. And the AFL community nods like a herd of sheep on Rhys Stanley’s farm.

Society these days is finished. Those who preach tolerance ultimately are the most intolerant people in life. And yet this group of people who used to be the last picked in sport at school control what you can say, think and do. We live in a world where we try to appease everyone but instead all we are doing is pleasing nobody.

Free the GWS players, free the AFL umpire from the ludicrous punishments handed to them. And free society from the dagger that has speared and struck out humour, satire and comedy.

Be ironic if Osama was the umpire’s nickname.

I have heard people hypothesise that being smart gets in the way of playing well in a contact sport - that if you actually thought seriously for a second about what you were about to do, and the cost/benefit of it, you wouldn't be so fast to do it.
cerebral types don't often cross over into having the pure instinct and coordination.

It's interesting point.

Do "smart" people go into high status professions and leave footy?

Do footy players act dumb to fit in?

I guess high iq/intellect could help with some sports/roles.

Footballer are not known for their intelligence and are easily led.
That has been established for many years

my point (from at least personal experience and observation) is that 'intellectual' types over-analyse and over think. It is their muscle so to speak, their form of action. Football is largely about 'doing' in a physical sense, which comes with its own type of 'thinking'(albeit sizing things up and choosing an option after thousands of hours of practice). There are some razor sharp football intellects (Sam Mitchell comes to mind, Scott Pendlebury) who think about football in a highly strategic sense, however very few crossover into being more conventional 'smart people'.

Oh you're not wrong, thats sn established type.

I was terrible at footy, very clumsy, not sure if that supports your point or not😉.

There's gotta be some smart players though and I imagine the blokey footy atmosphere might led fellas to downplay being "smart".

Makes sense.
