I watched a doco about Bonny and Clyde the other day. After they were killed a huge crowd mobbed the dead bodies to steal souvenirs off of them. This is about the same time blacks were treated as animals and Hitlers Nazi party popularity was booming.
People have always been shit, lets not pretend like it’s a modern phenomenon.
Yeah man, we totally suck.

I like me though. I'm alright.

To be fair, Venezuela is a good modern example exactly what they were saying
Venezuela suffered under political interference and the lack of foresight if diversifying the economy. After Canada and the US could afford to produce oil when its 1.60 at the station the criminal OPEC flooded the market to kill the US and south American industries. it was still a second world country. It wasnt as bad as everyone pointed out. Certainly not good either.
Nice rant, so you'll be avoiding any social healthcare during this crisis, refusing any of the social welfare that is distributed and boycotting all of the supermarkets that are rationing almost all of their goods. Good to know you'll be rallying against all of these measures overseen by this socialist government.
Hes going to drive on the own road he paved on the car be built and lecture you about individualism

You pay 'exorbitant' taxes so that we can raise the living standards of everyone and have a functional society. Unless you thing we should be like America where literal 3rd works slums are across the road from mansions, and it is a legitimate
threat to your life to drive through some areas of town.

2nd and 3rd most liveable cities in the world. This socialism stuff is terrible apparently.

We don't live in a socialist city at all, there is class divide throughout society and as long as that is occurring you can never ever claim we are a socialist society. Like any democratic and progressive country, we have some socialist like practises eg Centrelink and Healthcare but essentially we are a capitalist-driven country and we have prospered because of it.

Tacky material things have never been cheaper and yet important vital stuff has never been more expensive.

Housing, health care, infrastructure, electricity, education, good food, maintaining public spaces, the environment. All the stuff that really matters are getting harder to afford for both individuals and government.

Yet you can buy new cars for the almost the same cost as 30 years ago. You can get almost anything on amazon cheaply these days. Cheap to mid level food is available at prices that leave little profit margin. Everyone is materialistic but no one is getting paid for it. The little guys aren't getting a fair cut and we don't even have that many big guys here because we really don't make much in Australia anyway.

We're still going to be a capitalist society but we have to implement a little bit of everything - socialism, nationalism, crack open the wallet to spend up in some areas, tighten the belts pretty radically in others.

Certainly things are heading for a shake up and hopefully we get the message after all of this that we should be doing so much better.

Your first two points I agree with, but the sooner Churches and organised religion die off the better off we'll be.

There is definitely a great need for the community aspect that churches provide, but I think we can achieve that in other ways.

Option 1: Modernise and democratise the church (probably too late for that, def in our life time)

Option 2: I have been waiting 30 years. Still no alternative from people who share most of the values of the church, like yourself, and want a replacement.

Unfair. Whilst those things are true, they also do a lot of good. Yeah some of it might be under the perception that they'll burn in hell if they don't, but organisations like St Vinnies and the Salvos for a start pick up a lot of slack whilst the rest of society looks out for number 1.
So they ****ing should, they don't pay any taxes and get funding from the government. They're not doing it out of the goodness of their own hearts.

Way to contradict yourself.

I'm not religious in any way. I do love the fact people can seek solace in such a place if they need to.

Not that I really care... I’m a free market anarchist... I just steal what I need and file very dodgy tax returns
I love getting creative at tax time!!! So much fun!!!

(my favourites: I claimed a remote control car the wife bought me for chrissy, and a large collection of vintage star wars (bootleg) figurines... I said they were "office adornments"! Clever!!!)

What does that even mean?

The church is a volunteer institution - unpaid.

But they are in it for the money?

Your wild criticism of those good people has cost you nothing... not even a moment of thought, certainly not even an hour of volunteer work with the church.

But if you want to blow hard, blow hard.

I can't imagine too many Aussies want to see medical bankruptcies here like they have in the US.

A police force which stops your neighbours deciding they will take what you have.
Strawman.

He's simply claiming that what he puts in is disproportionate to what he gets back, which is true for a lot of taxpayers.

And so do people who pay nothing.
It's a small price to pay. The alternative is living in gated communities, driving past slums on your way home from work, and having a greater risk of being a victim of crime.

If anything, I think taxes should be increased to further subsidise education. Tertiary education should be free in my opinion.

And yes, I pay more than my fair share of taxes too.

Again, strawman.

I’m not advocating an all or nothing approach, just a reduction.
