Exactly the same could be said about Steven MayOk...lets talk seriously
Maverick Weller - too good for u'16s, was very capable in two games with u'18s!
I would like to put my life savings on it that he is atleast a top 5 pick in two years time...should go number 1!
That is all.
WA 16s over-run by Vic Metro
Despite dominating in the ruck, Western Australia was unable to stop a rampant Vic Metro in the first match of their NAB AFL Under-16 Championship campaign on the Gold Coast.
The WA ruck division, led by Lloyd Skinner, had the wood on their opponents from the first bounce but it was no use as Vic Metro forwards Luke Mitchell and Cameron O’Shea kicked nine goals between them to steer their side to a 17.14 (116) to 10.11 (71) victory. Jamie Cripps and captain David Swallow showed the way early for the Black Swans with their unselfish play and steaming runs out of the middle, putting early pressure on Vic Metro.
Livewire forward Brandon Matera gave the crowd something to cheer about with a magnificent banana goal from the boundary and that was followed up with a booming 60m kick for goal from Jack Darling.
However the Vic Metro forwards were able to make more of their opportunities to take a one goal lead into the first break. Adam Faulkner came out strong for WA, racking up the possessions and kicking two goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter, while Daniel McDonald was also having plenty of influence around the ruck contests.
However, there was little they could do to stop the influence of Metro’s Ryan Wilson who took ownership of his half forward line and helped give the Vics an eight point advantage at half-time.
The second half was all Vic Metro as Luke Mitchell and Kieran Harper capitalised on mistakes made by a tiring WA midfield. Hopes of a WA fightback surfaced through the efforts of Swallow, Darling and Reece Conca who were going in hard at every contest and doing their best to spark some life into their team.
But their efforts were lost on Metro’s big men as they laid on another five goals in the last quarter to run out winners. WA coach Trevor Williams said he was disappointed with the team’s second half but praised the efforts of Skinner.
“Lloyd Skinner gave away five or six centimetres but he just jumped all day and his timing was terrific,” Williams said.
“He gave us really good first use of the footy and that’s what gave us some momentum in the first half. “At the end of the day they were just too big and too strong.”

WA 16s get the winning feeling
Western Australia bounced back with a comprehensive victory over the Victorian Country team in the NAB AFL Under-16 Championship at Southport Oval on Thursday, July 31.
Vic Country went into the match full of confidence after an 18-point win over South Australia earlier in the week but were ultimately no match for the WA side who ran out 20.14 (134) to 11.9 (75) winners.
Western Australia looked to have complete control over the game early on as they kicked the first four goals but a late rally from Vic Country saw WA go into the first break with only a 10-point lead.
The Vics came out firing in the second quarter, stealing the lead with some clever groundwork in their forward 50m and a rock-solid defence that the boys from the West couldn’t find a way through.
When they did find space, a goal to Redmond Dobson made it seven individual goal-kickers for WA which seemed to inspire Brandon Matera as he kicked another two in the space of three minutes to leave WA trailing by only eight points going into the long break.
The start of the third quarter made it clear that it was WA who wanted the win more as some intense tackling and increasing pressure around the contests saw the Black Swans pile on five goals to Country’s one.
Some outstanding leadership from captain David Swallow and fantastic pressure from the half-back line ensured that the quarter was played mainly in WA’s half.
Vic Country had no answer to the run from their opposition in the last term.
The backmen put in another solid showing, restricting Country to only two goals in the second half.
The WA forwards kicked another six to close out the match, the highlight of which was a 65m bomb from Daniel McDonald which was ushered through by the clever forwards, giving them a 59-point victory.
The win leaves all teams in the competition equal on four points, ensuring that the two winners of Sunday’s games will battle it out on AFL grand final day.
WA coach Trevor Williams said the win was well-deserved after the work the team had put in.
“We’re very pleased for the boys after what happened in the last game,” he said.
“We took it up to Vic Metro on Monday but we just couldn’t sustain it.
“Today we had to be mentally stronger and I think it was telling that they stuck it out for each other the whole game.”
WA plays South Australia on Sunday in a bid to lock-in a grand final berth.
Goals
WA- Matera, Jones 4, Pezzali, Darling 2, Swallow, Hancock, Faulkner, York, Butcher, McDonald, Dobson, Murray.
VC- Keath 4, Russell 3, Cahir, Salton, Slabbert.
Tassie by about 8 points over NSW
NT by about 80 over queensland by memory.
It is up on the afl web site
Steve May kicked 6 for NT against Tasmania - has killed it so far but for some reason doesn't get in the best. His tackling pressure is second to none and presents really well. Is already pretty well built, and if he were to grow another few centimetres, (I know it's a big call) but he could be something like the next Buddy. He moves extremely well for a KPP and has a good head on his shoulders.
so WA beat VIC C and SA but lossed to VIC M.
Swallow has great skills was said by another poster the only negative to Andrews game so he must be a jet. Darling,Matera and Swallow chopping up by the sound of things. How is C.York and Bradshaw going?
Does anyone know who won out of Vic Metro and Vic Country today?
Thanks Mav.
But seriously I agree with you - kids a gun.
Although top 5 might be pushing it.
Is one to keep an eye on in years to come.
The bolded writing and the bias plus the location have me worried.
