Philosphical question - do SA produce a different quality footballer v Vic v WA v Tas v developing states - I believe each are different and bring different quality players to the (drafting) table. What do others think?
1- Banner; Gets it and kicks it. Apparantly had 29 possies and 2 goals. His two goals were good and one kick to vickery in the third was a gem. Other than that i think he is overrated a bit. he is a beautiful kick of the ball, shame he lacks composure.
2- Kilpin; Just a good orinary no frills defender. Don't know how he started the champs on the ball, must have seen something i didn't. Needless to see he found his niche nicely in the bp and held his own. Sturggle come draft day.
4- Watts; Quiet day by jacks lofty standards. Took a couple of ripper marks, kicked a lovely set shot in the first. Decision making is something he needs to work on, tends to hang on to the ball and take on the world.
5- Stanton; I don't rate him, but i rated his game today. For a guy his height and athletic ability you would assume domination. He doesn't really deliver but when he was realesed onto a wing/ HB in the second quater gave great drive by hand and foot. I think he'll get picked up 50+- rookie but very luckily.
6- Gotch; B.O.G at qtr time. Was terrific early. When i first saw him waddle around for metro against country i thought oh-o but proved me wrong. Sturggle to get picked up as the height factor goes against him, but he is very quick in the mind, tidy by hand and foot and loves the contested ball.
7- Gysberts; Can tell he's a smooth mover but didn't impact the game a hell of a lot today. One for next year (watch for the AIS-AFL selection).
8- Lynch; Coming off a knee reco so will give leeway, but thought he was ordinary today. Last qtr was OK but pretty selfish game by tom. IF he learnt to play his role as that 2nd/ 3rd tall around half forward he would get alot more of the ball than what he did.
9- McKernan; Comprehensively beaten in the hit outs by the big nick-nat, but very impressive around the ground. Amazed to see him first choice ruck ahead of vickery, was proven correct today. Definately a floating CHB/ CHF at AFL.
12- Sloane; Solid as a rock. No frills defender who would be a coaches dream. hope he gets picked up, will bring back the old nugget Back pocket who just doesn't stop. Loves the contest, has genuine pace and is pretty versatile for his height. The mitch farmer of 2008.
17- Strauss; Bout time he delivered. Have been watching him without the excitement. However today his drive off half back was terrific. One to watch, can't be a one trick pony, needs to play more footy like he did today. Foot skills definately his weapon.
18- Hurley; Never beaten one-on-one. Amazing competitor, emulates the Nathan Brown type at AFL full back except more damaging by foot/ disposal. Again just won the contest today.
19- Gaertner; See Stanton. Ditto stanton actually barring the performance aspect. Not much game time for little output.
21- Fitzpatrick; Quiet today. Good player, i rate.
22- McGarry; Very quiet today. Started well with his first attack on the ball but faded badly. Has some habits watching him play TAC but his pace is very good, just needs a bit of coaching.
23- Shuey; Got in the best- anyone else confused? Wins the hardball, has decent pace, nice height, disposal on the run ordinary and decision making ordinary aswell. When he is clear he tries the nathan buckley stab spear and 9/10 butchers the ball. Saw him do the same thing vs Eastern in round 1 over and over.
24- Zaharakis; Awesome today. B.O.G for mine. Pace good, fitness good, skills great, inside and outside. Just did it all, showed how the modern day midfielder is meant to be played. Felt the stats ripped him off a bit today, seemed to have more than the 18.
27- Hunt; Quiet. Had a pretty solid carnival for someone considered 'under the radar'. Foot skills are solid without being great. Love his hardness, has speeeeeed. One thing lets him down is decision making. Like him as a rookie to see how he develops on a list. Definite one to watch.
28- Blease; Awesome. Bottom aged and eligable, only real danger is his body shape and history with O.P. the AFL clubs should get togethor and say hes good enough to be picked in this draft, but for his best interests we should all refuse to pick him. I just see him breaking down at the next level if he gets picked this year. Having said that great game today. Has poise, pace and great foot skills.
31- Lisle; One i think has had a bit too much press for what he is, although today showed me a lisle i haven't seen before. He is actually quiet athletic, and not just a plodder. His run was good, genuine AFL CHB.
32- Scully; Quiet today. 3rd quater came into it with his hands and vision. One to watch next year.
34- Vickery; AWESOME. B.O.G with zaharakis. Marking, ruck work beat nick-nat comprehensively IMHO. Have always rated him the best ruckman in oz. Needs to work on set shot kicking but his vision, hands, ability to cover ground and general strength is exceptional. In my Top 5 for draft.
34- Smith; If he had've played more carnival without the groins he would have been a dominant presence. Was terrific today. Definite top 30er i'd say. Footskills, pace and hard at the ball attitude.
I've just finished watching the tapes from Wednesday and have taken down the names of a few players who look good movers with good skills but don't get as much of the ball or talk of the bigger name players. I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on how their carnival has been (I have only seen Wednesdays games) and whether they're likely to be drafted.
- Ben Speight (liked him especially)
- Xavier Gotch
- Matthew Sharpe
- Alex Wilson
- Riley Milne (Pendlebury-like through traffic I thought)
- James Strauss
what do u think of sam blease??
i heard he may go a second round draft pick is this true??
id say his performance yesterday would have boosted him up the drafting ladder and would certainly be a handy low pick in the draft
just wondering your thoughts??
Problem with Speight is that he doesn't seem to have a weapon that will set him apart at AFL level. A good player, but I see him as a jack of all trades, master of none. I liked him in both games in Melbourne but he'll be hard pressed to find himself on a list.I must admit I was pretty keen on Milne. I thought he did some v nice things and showed terrific composure. Definately one in the mix. Agree with you on Speight albeit wasnt as keen on him.
