Did it look like Hale may be carrying an injury? And what's the likelihood of Bailey having a game in the next week/s?

I really hope our rucks improve this year.

Max was sitting in the stands behind me with the majority of the resting players. He had a full length compression tights on one leg, (right leg if I remember right) Must still have swelling on the knee.

Burgoyne and Osborne spent a bit of time up forward as did Schnieder who kept his feet in a one on one contest against his opponent and won the ball giving Whitecross a shot at goal (which he missed). Whitecross was lively but just ain't a forward for mine but he is looking ok and finding plenty of it.

Remember calling out that he needed to keep his feet in that contest. Was very impressed when he actually did! Am sure the coaches will think the same.:thumbsu:

To confuse the North players.

Seriously, the jumper selection department is run by complete idiots.

I must have seen North players directly drill the ball to Hawthorn players on at least 4 occassions today, and that's not taking in to account the turnovers.

Funny that it didn't seem to work the other way. Maybe the jumbers were not as much of an issue as you think!:D

To those people concerned about centre clearances... 80% of the time we played younger kids in the centre bounce - it was often Mitchell with Tuck and Shneider, or Rioli, Lewis and Milne. When the season proper starts and Mitchell, Burgs, Sewell, Hodge, Lewis and Cyril are in there together, we will be much more competitive.

That said - agree, unless Bailey comes back and makes an impact, we will again be forced to concentrate on sharking taps.

Still very concerned with our ruck situation.

Remember the North team was missing a large number of their better players too, including Rucks and mids.

Just a few things from my perspective which was up high in the grandstand, Renouf improved markedly after quarter time when Monkey had a strong and demonstrative word about how both he and his opponents were rucking and the acting captain performed well on the day and led by example, i for one hope he gets the job of vice captain for the season proper.

Funny thing about that was that SEN said Norf had 9 players missing and Hawthorn was at full strenght

I must say I was pleased with the way we played yesterday.

"The game" these days is all about the forward press as used by Collingwood (most effectively) and other teams to a less effective standard. If you can't get through that press you are a goner.

All pre season the training has been about working the ball forward through the press. Both by fast accutate hanballs under extreme pressure and short accurate kicks, including the 10 - 20 metre around the corner ones to a free man, followed by fast and long prenetrating kicks to a free man heading towards goal.

The Hawks did this with great effect yesterday. There were a number of goals scored with Hale, Roughie and Buddy getting in behind the defenders and taking simple grabs for easy shots, or Roughie, especially, being able to lead into a free spece around the 40 - 50 area from goal to take a supurb pass directed at his ****.

In a couple of the "practice"games against the Tiggers that was the primary exercise the club was working on getting honed, the extraction from a flooded defence into a forward line that is not flooded and the forwards can go one out with their opponent.

I was impressed with the run of the smaller players yesterday who were able to get forward and be at the fall of the ball if we did not mark it and to be there to apply extreme pressure to the opposition defenders if they got if.

It is early days but what I saw was light years ahead of 2009 and 2010. This is a game plan for 2011

THAT! Such a pivotal tact for success, however it can be extended to our defence also; essentially numbers at the drop of the ball where pressure can be dispensed. It's a key ingrediant in all premiership sides - Hawthorn '08 were no different.

I noticed in cats v saints at time both teams tried the kamikase run and handball through the traffic which seems to have originated at Knights essendon.

Sometimes works sometimes fails badly

I've been very impressed with the Schneiderman based on what I saw last weekend and the reports from yesterday, he looks like an AFL-grade footballer with the way he moves and uses the footy.... and to be there straight away is impressive. I'd like to think we fit him in up forward/bench this year Rioli-style? Breust is OK in terms of an upgradable rookie, but Schneider may have already gone past him.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure about him going past Bruest, as they are different players, but I do know that he's impressed quite a few at the club in his first few months.

He nominated Sam Mitchell as the player he most admired before drafting, and to be honest, that sort of respect and understanding for someone who had to do it the hard way is something that has no doubt gone through his mind when initially missing out on being drafted.
If he continues to take steps forward like he has in his first few hitouts he may just follow in Mitchell's footsteps and become a genuine senior player.
Here's hoping.

Didn't see the game yesterday, but from what I have seen they are different players.

Breust seems more developed, is quicker, stringer and better in the air.

Schneider seems like a more natural centre-man style player to me that's clever, but with his lack of height, it pronbably going to need an extra year of conditioning and adding some pace to have a big impact in the season proper.

Certainly seems like a very handy pick up from the rookie draft.

Loved the look of Bruce yesterday, and kept thinking if he's as flexible as we think and he can play anywhere between half-back and half-forward, then add Hodge, Ellis, Sewell to the mix in the middle and we suddenly look a lot more dangerous. Obviously, it was only a practice match, but I liked what I saw in terms of the new gameplan. I thought we missed a fair bit of speed in the backline, and it would have been nice to see Puopolo in there, but alas we did enough.

Cheney was good and got a bit of it early. Gibson played probably the best game I've seen him play for us, fantastic. Gilham did some nice things and was strong throughout. What a great relief it was to watch Buddy and the Rough after a full preseason, and them taking clean marks and kicking straight.

Very very pleased to see Burgoyne ripping it up through the guts. He is the epitome of class, that man. Schneider had a great game, lot of love for this kid... seems to have that hard-edge Hawthorn in him already. I hope he gets some games this year.

Highlight of the day was Cyril's one-handed mark running out of defensive 50 with no vision of the ball. Stunning.

Gibson, Franklin, Roughead, Schneider and Bruce my best.

Thought Cheney was really impressive though. Still one or two blunders, but very solid defensively and showed a bit of toe.

Bruce looks a good get. He's lost a bit of pace, but he's extremely clever and seemed to have a few seconds up his sleeve regularly.

Well done molly. Good on the spot stuff.

Interesting that Monty rated Schneider BOG. I've been very impressed with the way he goes about things & obviously many others have too.

The Schneider BOG comment was probably a bit of a friendly dig at me as I have been talking him up since seeing him round 1 of the NAB and seeing him at training! Is looking great!

Really liked Bruces game. Didn't seem to get a heap of it, but was class in all that he did!

To really be pushing for games early in the season I think the young guys need to be amongst the best in these games. A couple of nice things/showing that he's got 'something' isn't enough at this stage to really command a spot - just enough to show that down the track they might be good.

To this end I'm expecting Schneider, Savage and Poops to get games early. The rest still have some distance to go before AFL games are awarded.
