NAB CUP: Essendon vs Brisbane

McPhee makes too many bad decisions to play in the back line and Nash still worries me a lot. Dyson put his body on the line once, but that is about it. Bellchambers was impressive in the ruck. Laycock will be starting to feel the pinch.

barring injury to others, its starting to become very difficult to find a position for Laycock imho, Bellchambers looking the goods:thumbsu:

Don't get me wrong, Bellchambers is showing all the signs of becoming an excellent tap ruckman.

But at the moment he simply isn't ready. This week he played well against Luenberger and Redden. Last week he struggled against Hudson and Minson.

Give him a year or two, but Laycock is pretty safe for now.

Feva we were missing Welsh, Stanton, Prismall, Reimers, Houli.

Feva!! which side won the NAB Cup then won the spoon! would that be Carlton of course it was!

I've said this before but the NAB is a series of practice matches that means little to the season proper, its good to see Essendon play a defensive type of game and neither side were at full strength.

The game could have been a blow out for either side when you take into account the missed shots on goal, Hille missed three in five minutes.

The real stuff starts in a month, that's when we will start judging results and player performance.

It was arguably one of the worst games I have ever attended (and to think I took my English cousins to their very first game of AFL tonight).

Barring all of the defensive zoning and talk of 'who was missing who' the obvious positives for the Bombers tonight were:

- Winderlich - anybody who says he is not in our best 22 simply has no idea
- Lack of injuries - bar McVeigh who they believe will only miss a week or two we got through unscaved (is that a record for Gumby and Dempsey playing two games together?)
- The opporunity to play Collingwood. Surely that will give the young guys some exposure to a bigger atmosphere than 12,000
- Skipworth - I'm being cheeky here but going off two NAB Cup games he is outperforming the man we overlooked :p He is almost certain to take Welsh's position in Rnd 1

I think that Laycock's position is safe once fit, Bellchambers has a long way to go in terms of body strength. His tap work tonight was good but against little opposition.

I too am a little concerned with McPhee. The half back line is definetely his go, he just seems to continually lack confidence with his kicking and decision making. Hopefully he can get that back this season as he is a big asset and will help the likes of Fletcher and Ryder.

I think we will bring in Hurley, Pears, Houli, Zaharakis and Reimers this week with McVeigh, Slattery (Tyson), Dyson (because I still don't rate him), Lloyd (he already looks good and doesn't need to play), Nash (same reason as Dyson) all getting the week off.

Thoughts people?

P.S How many of you will actually be going this week?

Yeah it was a shitty match... I had to stay up until 1am before the broadcast started as well, so you can imagine how impressed I was.
The defensive zoning was a pleasing aspect of the game... we looked reasonably disciplined there.

Yes on Winders. A terrific return considering his length of absence.
Lovett was okay.
Nash was at once frustrating and other times good, as was Neagle.
Neagle really has to step it up a bit, he's lucky Daniel Merrett wasn't playing or he mightn't have gotten that touch on ball at all.
I really like Bellchambers in the ruck and Hille pushing forward, but I agree that Bell's body is still too slight.
Brisbane are looking towards three big strong talls in Brown, Bradshaw and Clark. The prospect there is awesome, and I would hope that's the kind of strong forward line we're aiming at too... ie, Gumby and Neagle, hit the gym. Bellchambers, hit the gym so you can ruck more competitively, and Hilley to spend more time up forward (and more time practising set shots at goal!)
Ryder was a bit lost last night... probably one of the most disappointing performances I've seen from him.
I don't even know who was supposed be tagging Ash McGrath... if it was McVeigh I'm okay with it given the ankle, otherwise, McGrath looked like he was being allowed the green light. Everytime he touched the ball I spewed on my f****** shirt.
Myers... more time.
Watson went looking for the ball which is good. The chemistry between Watson and Hille is starting to tell as well.
Skipworth, I agree, is definitely doing enough to stake his claim. If he keeps kicking a goal or two each week I'll be pleased. He seems also to make some fairly level-headed decisions.
I hope Fletch has gotten this season's clumsiness out of the way early. Heath Hocking improved on last week I thought. More productive disposals last night and keen to go hard at the ball which was pleasing.
Jetta really needs to go for himself more. Gee he's frustrating sometimes. The centring kick from the right forward pocket (second quarter?) was terrific. On another occasion he still could have run 5 - 10 metres and even have had a crack I thought, and instead centres to a two on one contest!!? Have a go man!
A victory's a victory, but sweet bloody Jesus if that's our standard in Round 1 I'll need a new shirt.
Reimers, Houli, Stanton and Prismall can't come soon enough.

The Pies might kill us next week.

Yeah I agree with that.

Essendon had a clearly better side on paper then Brisbane tonight, but will it play like that come round 1? Most probably not. You can't take any form lines or assumptions. Say it was a close game and move on.

I do understand form from the NAB Cup is as good as irrelevant come season proper, but I don't think it's naive to believe that IF Voss continues with the same game plan when you've got all your big guns back in (which seems to be the case going by what he said after the game) then you've got some worries.

Anyway it was a close game (which we should have lost in the end) and I've moved on from my post game contempt.;)

This game was much a defensive one, and showed where our defense is at.You could say we were pretty poor in that on the rebound, we were caught and were forced to give away free kicks, resulting in a goal.

One example being the ball coming out of the forward line to T. Slattery on the half back flank, him then turning it over, and because the majority of our players were up the other side of the ground, we were unable to flood, hence giving the opportunity for Brisbane to have space and get the goal (flether giving away the free).

Even though the game was slow, Winderlich showed us why he is easily in the best 22. Over 20 possesions and some run. Quailty, especially since it was his first game coming off a back op.

Dyson put his body on the line, and later on set up a nice goal. He has a good kick, it's just he doesn't always use it.

The tall forward line wasn't a sucess, though, it wasn't the night to have one.

The way Collingwood have been playing will suit us more, as our offense is much stronger than our defense.

Yeah I think that's an even-handed evaluation of Dyson. His inconsistency kills him, but there are times when he tries so hard that you know he's had a good think about what he needs to do to stay in the side. I've seen him deliver some rippers by foot that haven't warranted the ire of so many on BF, but his delivery is inconsistent and most people seem to only remember the shite. That said, don't ask me to give specific examples of his good kicks either... I don't remember any in detail, so I suppose, for me, they cancel each other out.

Prismall gets a gig based on his form at geelong, just because he hasn't played a game at essendon we cant discount the form he had with geelong. Also jsut because Mcveigh wasn't prominent in the first half doesn't mean he wont have an impact in the last. your lack of knowledge is astounding.

What I find more astounding is his terrible grammar!

Was Judd in Carlton's best midfielders at the start of last season?

C Judd was a superstar! won a brownlow and was a captain of a premiership side. Prismall has done what? played behind a bunch of freaks at geelong. The point i was trying to make is how can u say prismall will be in you best 22, when he hasnt had a gig in your midfield. He may have the Des Headland curse.

The fact he even made it into Geelong's midfield shows he'd walk into ours with ease.

spikey are u serious? judd is a freak and would be a certain starter in everyones team. that is one of the most funniest things i have seen for a while.

Oh dear. Ben was pointing out the obvious flaw in your theory.

how can u have prismall in your best midfielders if he hasnt even played for u guys ever

Now, if Prismall can't be in our best 22 because he hasn't played for our club, how could Judd be in Carlton's best 22 last pre-season? He hadn't played for Carlton yet...

Do you realise how much of idiot you are yet?

so your comparing judd to prismall hahaha hilarious
judd is a freak while prismall has played 12 games but yet you think he will be a certain starter for the bombers.

No. I'm (Along with Ben originally) pointing out that your 'prismall can't be in your best 22 cause he hasn't played a game for you" theory is dumb. Judd was of course in Carlton's best 22 last pre-season despite not playing for a game for them yet, why can't Prismall be in our best 22 this pre-season?
