In Australia- Climate change denial

They have been hugely successful in seeding doubt about the impacts of human indicef climate change and the benefits of renewables

But again, normal conservatives believe in the above, it's just the far right and their brigade of nutters.
Do you go more than 6 hours without posting about climate change?! 😂😂😂

Not remotely and unsure how you came to that conclusion. Your one track mind on climate says alot about you 😉. I wont keep you from your very active social and work life any longer, you have important climate slacktivism to attend to!
I love a bit of , how to say yes, without saying yes 🤣

What have conservatives actually done? Is there anything?

Inevitably Howard banning guns in Australia will get a run. :whitecheck:

But is there anything else?

Did Howard/Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison achieve anything of note?

Did Boris achieve anything?

Did Trump achieve anything?

When they write the history of the conservative story what success stories will they write about?

Better task - Name a conservative success story from the past 10 years. I honestly can't see any way they've improved the country, or even attempted to improve the country.

Well by swinging even further right, they've apparently willingly surrendered govt in several Aust jurisdictions, possibly made themselves unelectable for some time in the process, and guaranteed Andrews a third term in Vic to seemingly spite their own face. Many would consider that a success!

(Not so successful is that they've also abrogated their responsibility as a viable opposition In the same manner.)

I think there’s a fair argument none of them are true conservatives. I’d say Fraser was the last true conservative Australian PM we’ve had, and welcoming Vietnamese refugees into Australia was a notable achievement of his.

I don’t think we should be underestimating the hugeness of Howard’s gun laws.

Society changing.

And not a moment too soon.

With the enshitification of public discourse since the internet came along and ruined the human race, can any of us seriously imagine Albo or any PM of the last couple of decades making a stand on gun laws and seeing it through?

Sometimes have to scratch myself that he actually achieved it, and - given everything we’ve seen of the rodent since - that it was John. effing. Howard of all people.

For practically every other thing he’s done I would be the first to schitte in his porridge.

But when you look at the unhinged insanity of the USA now, for the gun laws I think all Australians should forever be deeply grateful to Howard.

Despite some disturbing signs of RW extremism, we will NOT end up like the US.

Increasing Jobseeker and bringing in jobkeeper during pandemic lockdown
While the motivation likely not pure (didn't want the average jobkeeper person who couldn't work to realise how bad life of jobseeker is) the outcomes were actually good
Obviously parts of implementation were poor (harvey norman...)

Where do we sit on the GST?

Should it be higher?

Increasing the GST (temporarily) would likely be a much more effective lever to pull to curb inflation than the RBA increasing the cash rate.

It largely hits non-essential spending given many groceries are GST exempt, and isn't putting more and more pressure on the housing market causing major issues on that front. It's also then hitting people with higher discretionary spending the hardest.

It was so poorly managed you cannot call it a success story though.

Everyone who was remotely close to eligible rorted the absolute **** out of JobKeeper. I know people that were claiming $70k a month and were technically legible by deferring invoicing. It was a joke. Every single tradie in the country with their partner on the books got to claim twice.

JobKeeper is largely responsible for the current inflation climate.

I was more meaning on the individual employees who received it, not the businesses (that was the implementation part I was also mentioning)

Classy - aren't these clowns meant to oppose cancel culture?

"Big W has announced it has stripped Welcome to Sex from shelves in its retail outlets and moved sales to online only, after staff members were abused."

They invented cancel culture.

They are against it being applied to them.

Yes it was ridiculously easy to rort but no putting it as the biggest thing in inflation is untrue.

Due to chinas covid policies there were less products available to supply and less containers to send them in. The world was competing with each other to get stuff.

Profiteering is the inflation precursor.

Profiteering is not possible without flooding the economy with cash. And the entire western world did that. In Aus $400b+ from the feds, plenty from the states, another $40b from super withdrawals, etc.

Corporates cannot take the piss unless the cash is there to take.

You needed a shortage - we released a shedload of cash federally during the gst without inflation.

1949. Menzies got rid of ration books. Labor wanted to continue with rationing because they feared price gouging and inflation.

Howard gets far too much credit for stopping something that was never going to happen (mass shootings everyday of the week).

We never had a gun problem.
We have never had a gun culture.
The divide between rich and poor is a million times worse in the USA than anywhere else on the planet.
Americans are stupid.
