Name the KPF/KPD you'd like us to get with our first pick

Yep I agree...

You know as well as everyone else knows. For the past 6 years, freo has taken the best available in the draft. All 6 guys freo have got with their 1st pick has been a midfielder.

My gut feeling now is Freo will choose Jono Marsh or Acres as pick 17... I get this gut feeling as well that there might be a repeat of last season. Freo wanted mason shaw but port got him 3 picks before us and got Tanner Smith instead. My gut feeling is McCarthy will be picked up in the mid 30s and Freo will use pick 37 on a Mitch Harvey or Cameron Giles who are both key forwards from SA.

That's a big call. Sure you don't just need some Yakuilt?

Well this time last year, Freo wanted Mason Shaw, who is a WA key forward. He lasted until Port at Pick 30. I reckon Freo were hoping he would last at pick 36. Again, Im happy Freo did well with that pick in Tanner Smith.

Also Its been a while since freo used a 1st round pick for a key Position player. I think it was Ryan Murphy with pick 12 in the 2003 draft. I wont be upset if Freo got another 190cm 80kg-90kg utility player like a Jono Marsh or Blake Acres. At least you know either will be handy as Tall mids or useful medium sized goal kickers.

Hell I would be happy if Freo got a good KPP with their 3rd round pick.

The one thing that always scratches my head about our mob is that we dont usually get something with our 1st round pick but nail the good players with the 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Because I reckon 80% of it isn't drafting but development of talent - these guys all start out as good footballers from juniors, its about how clubs develop them once they reach the club that makes the biggest difference.

I want our 2nd and 3rd round picks to be players who can hit the ground running. We are very close to a premiership and 1 extra players e.g. Morton for Sydney can make the difference.

I am starting to like Matt Fuller from Norwood, and I am hoping he can play a Guerra type role for us using his 60m accurate kick to set as up and get over the opposition zone.

At 21/22 at worst he is a good depth player, and will cover any injuries in our back half should they occur.

I think the trick is not to look too far back. Pick 17 Simpson (unknown) its all there if he wants it, Pick 16 Sheridan, Pick 20 Crozier,Pick 20 Pitt (we won't ever know but was rated very highly by Ross), Pick 4 Morabito (3 knees but FWIW I think will be a gun), Pick 20 Fyfe (need I say more). Pick 3 Hill, pick 21 Ballantyne, Pick 24 Suban. People like (as is their right) to obsess over the Pitt/ Darling thing but our picks in the last four or five years at the top end have been very good.
Bondy knows we need to deal with the talls issue. We started last year with Tanner, Tabs, and Moller and we will get a couple more this year. All's good me thinks.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bodies and character are just not settled at 17 yrs old. There is always speculation when the people you are picking are just not mature.

good call.

For the last three or four years people have been saying next years draft is full of quality Talls, and we
should wait.
The same line was spruiked last year, only to find that there is no true depth at all for 2013. Either we use our first round pick on a key position, or gamble like last year, and watch all the Talls go to other clubs again.
Our list does not require mids/flankers, even Simpson last year was excess, and when the club is letting go Michie, Mellington, Schloithe, you know these types will be lucky to get a game anyway.

I think the other thing to note is that we are rebuilding for sustained success. Not just topping up to get to a flag like Hawthorn, St. Kilda have done. Teams that have been rebuilt for a solid 5 years are unlikely to be able to get the job done, we have a few years to go yet before this ground up build reaches maturity.

Simpson was a luxury, agree. However, all the clubs (apart from Hawthorn) that took talls before us last year, like Port and Brissie are still looking at recruiting quality tall's this year, so their selections didn't completely fix their problems any more than ours did. Freo seem to be just as happy with Taberner and Tanner as Brissie and Port are with Shaw and Paperone.(time will tell) If, however, McCarthy slips to us and we don't take him then I'm afraid the s... will totally hit the fan.

I can't see them not taking him, if he's available. Will be bitterly disappointed if they pass.

That is true... Also if they get a season ending injury like Morabito, then it will send them a season back. I still remember freo getting Stephen Hill back in 2008. He only weighed 65-70kgs when we got him. Then we developed him to a point he is fully developed at 80-85kgs. I think they are trying to do the same thing with Josh Simpson.

I don't mind the forward planning for the long term. I see an interesting structure about the forward line after Pav Retires. Pav is a regular 60-70 goal a season forward. Now were going to rely on Gumbleton and a young key forward to partner him up to kick those 60-70 goals between them.

I wouldn't mind Cameron giles from Woodville west torrens in SA. He can play both as a key forward and key defender. But knowing freos drafting, were going to have a posse of 190cm 90kg utility players which is not too bad.

I said this the moment Ross Lyon came to freo, I expect freo to have a stint of 4-6 straight years of finals.

I'm on the Giles train too - if he lasts to our second pick I won't need Christmas for the next couple of years.
In saying that, he'll go around pick 22-28 I reckon and we aren't brave enough to drop a 17 on him

Why would GWS take McCarthy? They've got Cameron, Patton and will most likely draft Boyd. That makes no sense. They also would be more likely to draft a defender, which you would think would be Gardiner.
To keep him warm for us. GWS have no need for premiership points, they only get in the way of drafting MOAR KEY FORWARDS!!

It's a disgrace. GWS have had too many draft concessions. Freo had bugger all. This is 3 years into their history and they are still coping hand out and draft concessions.
That's because NSW is a rugby state and they won't watch their AFL team get smashed week in week out like they will in WA/SA/Vic. Without continued concessions NSW based teams would fold. if the AFL want a share of the Sydney market (which they obviously do), they'll need to ensure Sydney and GWS are successful on field. I don't think this level of assistance will decline any time soon.

They already have their academy set up, this will guarantee them a lot of players for cheap draft picks if they develop them right. Obviously they will need to have an extra 3-4 coaches getting these players right, but they could potential get 2-3 players year under the same rules as Father Son picks.

Yes and that's why I am angry with the whole situation. They could have just stoped at Sydney. If you don't have a supporter base, don't try and invent one. If they need to be successful to survive and the AFL has to give them financial handouts plus all the best players then it's not a true club. I'm over these new francises but I can't hate their supporters as they don't have any.

The academy will help them in the long term, but in the short term the AFL is propping them up as they are only drawing 5-10k per game at home. GWS exists as a club to satisfy the desire of the AFL to expand, not due to AFL fans in western Sydney demanding one. The AFL can't afford to have them struggle like Freo did for the first 20 years of our club. They need GWS to have on field success and fast.
