Name the KPF/KPD you'd like us to get with our first pick

Todays Sunday times article has made the connection that was missing from all our posters that Marsh is Ray Sorrell's grand son so for mine we have to go Marsh first pick so that the Sorrell conection to Fremantle remains with Fremantle .
Not only is he a good footballer but with that Blood flowing through his veins how could we not pick those Genes .:):thumbsu:

Honestly - any KPF that can kick straight and true under pressure and can take solid marks. Don't care what his name is or what he looks like.

reckon that's where the first deviation from what actually happens and what you want :p ....

But on the rest, it is more important that the KPF can take marks in good locations than the kicking side of things.

Medium size midfielder of which we have an abundance.
185 cm , 79 kg. I doubt we would be looking at him.
McCarthy then Giles my tips.

This board have been saying you must or will draft a tall in each draft over the past 4yrs but your recruiters have not once. What makes you think this draft is any different?

Your recruiters clearly go best available, and not needs based which is not a bad policy.

I agree TOA - I am certainly expecting best available and in a way expecting it to be anyone but what supporters think is the obvious (ie. McCarthy or Marsh).

This only works for so long, eventually you will have holes in your list that need to be filled. That is unless you're lucky and best available turns out to be a good mix of players over a period of time.

I think the problem has been that we simply don't rate any kpps high enough at our picks. We have gone best available for our footy club at each first round pick since 2008. Every year that passes and we don't draft a kpp, a kpp becomes more and more essential and therefore reaching will become necessary.

So much this. This place will be a mess draft day.

Just in case it happens that we take him at 17, a little preview.

#25 Brisbane (Via St Kilda compensation) - Michael Apeness (VIC – KPF/Ruck)
Height: 199cm, Weight: 101kg, DOB: 28/01/1995
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Style: Jonathan Giles
Player comparison:
Range: 20-rookie
Profile: Strong bodied ruckman who has shown some excellent ability up forward as a big marking target when given the opportunity. As a ruckman Apeness isn’t particularly dominant and probably at the next level won’t win the hitout count every week but when he gets his hands to it his hitouts are well directed. He’s not a super athlete but more of a physical player with a real presence to him at his size. Apeness I like most when he’s up forward because of that presence. He’s not only a big body but he can take marks at the highest point and take the contested grabs and marks 1v1.

25. Bris- Michael Apeness (VIC- Ruck/ KPF)
Eastern Ranges
199cm 101kgs
Player Comparison: Tom Bellchambers
Seen Apeness play a few times now and he’s got the size to tear a game to shreds. Of course, sharing the forward line with Tom Boyd makes it hard for him to stand out. Apeness is a very strong contested mark and a decent shot on goal. He came to life against NSW/ACT with 33 hitouts and really giving the Metro midfielders fantastic service. Probably not the most agile of ruckman, but he’s come on in leaps and bounds this year. There’s a few better pure ruckman in this draft, but his versatility and performance on the big stage are impressive enough to warrant a second round pick. Going a bit high here, but I think Apeness is perfect for them.

# 36 Geelong
Michael Apenness – Eastern Ranges / 199cm / 101kg / ‘95
I am real fan of this kid but am not sure where he lands and am questioning why I don’t have him higher. Reasonably athletic tall and when I think of guys like Keefe and Thompson I think of this kid at the same age and I think he is better than they were at the same point. Big tall kid who is aggressive and looks like will fill out and seems to have genuine footy smarts along with an ability to use the ball by hand and foot. Seen him play all over the ground in key position roles but think more likely a ruck / fwd type like Tippett and hence offers genuine development potential. Has great hands and seems to read the flow of the game pretty well so gets to good positions. Like my talls to be competitive….he is!

PICK 34: Brisbane Lions
Michael Apeness, Eastern Ranges
199cm, 101kg
Player Comparison: Kurt Tippett
In the absence of likely number 1 draft selection Tom Boyd, Michael Apeness stood up. The Eastern tall forward enjoyed greater responsibility and also thrived as he was targeted more often by his star-studded midfield. Apeness' marking stood out, he was strong above the shoulders and presented well and often looked likely to mark up forward. As a forward, Apeness read the play quite well and his positioning was better than expected. When moving into the middle as a ruckman, Apeness' tapwork to midfielders was above average and he regularly gave his midfielders first use of the football.

Pick 41 – Brisbane – Michael Apeness (KPF/RUC)
Club: Eastern Ranges
Height: 199cm
Weight: 101kg
With Brown on the way out and Longer seeking a trade, picking up Apeness here will add some depth to Brisbane’s stocks in both weakened areas. The main attraction here is his sheer size and physicality; he has a real presence which is something Brisbane will definitely need post-Brown. Not the most natural ruckman but will provide a contest every time.

Hey, we can hope can't we? No, but in all honesty, you're dead right. Bunch of dreamers us. Watch us take Kade Kolodjashni or Blake Acres if either is available.

That has been the story of our recent past but the reality of needs is now more urgent.
Last year, it's fair to say we would have moved on a tall forward if Josh Simpson had not have stayed on the board. Then of course there was the insanely unlucky run of clubs taking all the ideal talls that we had interest in. ( or the fans thought we had interest in ).

It's hard to be too critical when the club has just played off in a GF.
I am confident if McCarthy is available at our 1st , we'll take him.

Maybe our recruiters will judge McCarthy to be the best available at our pick then.

Write up on Marsh on Afl.com Sound interesting but a little similar to Duffy just a little taller.

THE WEST Australian is one of this year's most compelling draft prospects. He can do things like nobody else: pick up the ball at top speed, accelerate and then kick a goal from 55 metres. But he is also inconsistent, and without the footy nous of a few other prospects.
Marsh had played most of his junior footy through the wing and midfield before this season, when he took on a key-position role up forward. His best game of the championships came against Vic Metro at Patersons Stadium, when he almost singlehandedly turned the game Western Australia's way with three goals and a blistering final term. He is not quite a modern-day key-position height (192cm), but is probably too big to play as a full-time midfielder.

STRENGTHS
Marsh's speed is central to everything he does. At last month's NAB AFL Draft Combine, he ran 2.78 seconds for the 20-metre sprint, narrowly missing the all-time record of 2.75. It was the fastest of any player this year. Then in the repeat sprints he tested third quickest (24.18 seconds). It was evidence of what is seen on the field: when Marsh gets going, nobody can catch him. He can mark and jump (he was 10th in the standing vertical leap), and he has a thumping kick on him when he connects.

WEAKNESSES
Because everything is go, go, go with Marsh, he can do a lot of things in a rush and lack some composure. His kicking is also very hit-or-miss, as seen in his goalkicking numbers for East Fremantle, where he kicked 20 goals and 37 behinds in 13 games.

PLAYS LIKE
Nobody else, really, and that's the attraction or the put-off. His electrifying pace as a taller forward is his point of difference. Maybe there's a bit of West Coast forward Jack Darling in him, in terms of being slightly undersized but too athletic and nippy for key backs to handle.

DRAFT RANGE
Very hard to read. Most likely in the 20-40 bracket.

BOTTOM LINE
With a highlights package like no other, Marsh might be the most unpredictable player in the draft. His good is sensational, his bad makes you look away. Harness his talent, though, and there are the makings of a unique player.

I would expect either or both of McCarthy and Acres to be available at our first selection and would be happy with either. Acres perhaps a better player: McCarthy a better fit for our needs.
And perhaps Ellis, an attacking FPD in the second round. Or, in a different world, would Dale Garlett still be available? Would we be interested?
If you use the AFL website (yes i know how dubious it is) as a straw pole for who is likely to go when. The participating public have McCarthy going to Carltank as pick 13 and us picking up Marsh. To be honest I would still prefer McCarthy but I can live with Marsh

Marsh is super quick but his kick although long needs not be so rushed and his skills cleaned up. If Freo are confident they can improve his disposal he would be a great player.

He kicked 20 goals 37 last season in 13 games. Imagine if he could turn that around.

Callum Twomey:
All the talk over the last couple of days has been linking Brisbane to McCarthy at pick 7. Don't mind that idea - he's the second best tall in the draft and if they got him there instead of a midfielder, they could get some mids in the 20s.
