Seems like getting Treloar and losing this guy won't be the biggest loss then :)
My honest thoughts are it's about the pick; we effectively wasted pick 10 on him.
If we were adequately compensated and he went on and had a nice career with you guys I could live with it.

Interesting that Paul Connors said we weren't chasing Aish because we think our midfield is ok.

I would think it's the opposite - we'd be chasing him harder now that Freeman has walked.
Should be. Freeman had something none of our mids have which is that turn of foot. We need to chase someone with some pace.

Obviously depends what we get for him.

losing a first round draft pick that you haven't seen play is disappointing and can really backfire should he realise his full potential. It's a shit time for the club and Freeman but sometimes both need a new start to hit the ground running again.

Not sure what's happening behind the scenes to cause this. This is a guy yet to play a senior AFL game, that's all he is now. I can see the clubs stance in holding fast in any negotiating. For me they have done their part in a) drafting him and b) supporting him through his injury and rehabilitation. Freeman should now be repaying the faith before asking for more money or additional contract length.

I'm not worried if we lose him, disappointed yes, but not worried.

It's more on what he could become

What was the feeling of Freeman from Pie fans before he was drafted? And were you pleasantly surprised or mortified when he was picked at 10? What kind of player did you see him being? Similar to anyone running around now?
Probably a cross between Buckley, Rob Harvey, Lenny Hayes, Judd, Lethal but more leaning to a GAJ.

Now give us your second round pick!:D

If we can't get a deal that keeps us happy then Freeman can take his chances in the ND or PSD. With Carlton, Brisbane, GCS and Essendon all with selections ahead of the Saints he can't be guaranteed where he might end up. Especially if the Saints don't commit with their 1st pick. Not sure he's pick 1-5 worthy and if the Saints opt for someone else at 5 he'd have a nervous wait till their 2nd round pick. Even in the PSD hard to see him surviving till pick 5.

Why would he nominate for the ND? He'll nominate for the PSD if necessary. In that case, given that the last two years have seen exactly one PSD pick each year, I'm confident that he'll end up exactly where he wants. Because why would Melbourne or Essendon leave an empty spot on their list just on the off-chance that Freeman will be available to them? When has that ever happened?

It's a negotiation and the Pies have a weak negotiating position, same as the Saints had with Ball. You won't get much and in two years when Treloar's playing well you won't even remember the Freeman thing. Don't worry about it so much.

my initial reaction was disappointment but after reading that one of his concerns was that we have a good midfield depth I'm glad that his going. A driven midfielder. Pendles / Dangerfield / Ablett / Judd would go to pre season and work harder to prove that they are better then the rest and earn a spot. instead freeman is taking the easy route and going to st Kilda because they have a weak midfield and he is clearly weak minded to fight for his spot and prove that he belongs.

Then I hope Treloar becomes a jet for you, and Freeman becomes a gun for us, if either were even half as good as your proud captain I think we will both be big winners :)

People are getting upset at a player who is nothing more than POTENTIALLY a good player, he hasn't played a game, so to be crying and lamenting his loss, is bordering on hysterics.

and What Pick we used to Draft Freeman

Why does this keep coming up? We offered you more than fair value for Ball (Second rounder and Wellingham/Goldsack, but you decided not to take it.

3rd rounder in a shallow draft is practically worthless, we may not use our own, in fact PSD would be a better outcome for us because at least we'd be seen as standing firm.
You are never going to get that premiership back no matter how many zero game players you pinch from us, you should go back to your board where your hopes and dreams will be encouraged.
Only the cold stark reality of you never seeing a flag awaits you here.

and under slightly different circumstances with Hawthorn wanting to get the best deal rather than caring about the player's demands

I think you're asking and answering your own questions Berger..."Why would Melbourne or Essendon leave an empty spot on their list just on the off-chance that Freeman will be available to them?.....ummm because Essendon or Melbourne would love (and probably need) another top 10 draft pick for nothing in the PSD??....now he's come out so early and said he wants a move, if their trade departments aren't all over any kind of chance to get him, then they aren't doing their due diligence.

As for "It's a negotiation and the Pies have a weak negotiating position"....again that's your take on the matter. I've been pretty happy with the way Hine gets his own way with trades....and this one isn't even a trade UNTIL Collingwood decides they want to trade. If they don't he just goes into the draft, which takes us back to your first statement.

Geez if I was a Bomber trader I'd be all over this;)

Freeman will no doubt get his wish and become a Saint. The sticking point is of course the trade that is offered. He is really a hard one to determine but the contract offered must be a guide...

What? Why? This is a negotiation between two parties with unequal negotiating positions. I'd compare it to similar situations:

O'Rourke: originally pick 2, played 9 games, wanted out, result: pick 18 (equivalent)
Polec: originally pick 5, played 16 games, wanted out, result: pick 28 (equivalent)
Longer: originally pick 8, played 9 games, wanted out, result: pick 21 (equivalent)
Jaksch: originally pick 12, played 7 games, wanted out, result: pick 27 (equivalent) along with Whiley
Docherty: originally pick 12, played 13 games, wanted out, result: pick 33

But most of these guys were higher picks than Freeman, and all of them had played more games. So as a guide I think it's definitely 30+.

As a guide, I think no one cares
