Approved to play, but I feel like he’s on borrowed time. Are we at a disadvantage mid season if he gets another concussion and is forced to retire.
Why not just accept that he has been given the all clear to play and move on? Worrying about him not getting through the medical review was bad enough without negatively interpreting a positive outcome.

Concerns over Murphy’s long term health and secondly… whether he sees a game out after a knock, let alone a season and not be forced into retirement- are legitimate

Has nothing to do with being ‘negative’

Can’t all just be feel good rainbows.

The authorities who approved him will have already considered this.
He should be fine.

Cleared to play by medical authorities should lower your concern for his long term health. Not cleared to play the opposite.

Great news ..hope the club work with (encourage) him over summer to play w 5% less courage

and all-out attack on the footy

he enters every contest like it might be his last

needs to learn how to protect his head

for his sake, for the sake of career longevity

you'd struggle to find a more genuinely courageous & honest player going around

No it's not all rainbows but also not all storm-clouds either after a rainbow appears.

I’m feeling optimistic given the tone of recent reports, but will still be in the habit of shitting myself whenever his thread gets bumped for a while.

This is just a decision for the here and now. You can save your shit for something later in the season or the year after....

The research is showing that there is a cumulative effect every time a person has brain trauma. So if he was on the cusp this time, then what will happen next time. Will he be on or over the cusp. It’s a legitimate concern.

That’s what I mean, another concussion and he could be retired!
I’d have thought the independent review would have been at least somewhat thorough in regards to the future risks to him if he continues to play on.

I highly doubt it was like “All right to go on Nath, but one friendly fire stray elbow from Brayden and you’re probably fcked’

Yep. They definitely need to work with him over summer on how he approaches contests

It really depends. I suspect they will assess thoroughly each time. We’ve had a number of other punters retire mid season. Chances of Murphy getting a concussion next year are high based on previous history. So I’m concerned

So you want to delist him? Or just wring your hands concernedly?

I think it’s a legitimate concern. There is growing evidence of cumulative effects of concussion however there hasn’t been a lot of context in articles we tend to see on the matter e.g. how long between each concussion, how severe each concussion is, what were the recovery protocols in each case, what amount of time is needed to properly heal. Throw in individual differences and we’ve still got a way to go in understanding the issue.

Any AFL player can be “retired” at anytime after an incident on the field.
The risk is obviously higher with Murphy’s history, but he is in no different situation than any of the hundreds of players that make up the competition.

Exactly this.

Murphy shows no signs of concussion from his latest incident on game day, either from tests done on the day or in subsequent medical tests. He sat out the GF due to an abundance of caution which given his history he has every right to do.

He’s free to play and that’s an awesome outcome, and quite frankly one that I’m not surprised about, despite some doomsayers on this thread writing him off based on their amateur medical knowledge.

Risk remains as it is in place for all players.

Dr Kappa is going to be devastated with this news.

He might have to hand in his Weetbix box that has his medical doctorate on it and form his own break away medical association where he can teach fish not to swim, just in case they might drown.

From memory, the certificates used to be in or on Weeties boxes. Is the cereal still on supermarket shelves? It was like eating cardboard.
