Pick 42 in 2009 National draft, we took Sam Grimley at pick 39. I know it is to early to tell or cast judgement but I thought at the time Vardy was a good player to let slip, as he was touted as the second best ruckman behind Big Max Gawn. I hope I am proven wrong but Grimley will have to be quite good to be better than Vardy on his last 2 games he has played as I can't see Hawkins getting back in the side to replace him.

Vardy looks a real prospect and maybe the new sub rule suits his style, something not considered back in 2009; as it was not something we thought would be introduced 2yrs down the track.

Must be a real gun to keep Hawkins out.

That said Vardy looks like a solid long term replacement for Ottens both as a forward and ruck. We don't really need another ruck on our list so no regrets just yet.

Nathan Vardy doesn't play for Hawthorn, so I don't really care how he looks for Geelong.

Grimley is the player on our list, and the only one that matters to us.

Hypothetical hindsight drafting really should have it's own board.

I went to school with Grimley and im still baffled that he's on an AFL list. I personally just dont see him become an A-Grade player... I think he's a bit unco and is a project player that may never gel to the game, he's a basketballer and his very light framed.

Grimley will become a KPD for us. Tall, athletic.. just needs more muscle. No use comparing him to Vardy as i believe they will become very different players.

People neglect to remember that we drafted a ruckmen who would have been the highest rated ruckman that year.. had we not drafted him a year earlier.

Lowden was the only 17 y.o ruckman drafted in 2008. He would have been the first ruckman drafted in 2009 without a doubt had it not been for us recruiting him in 2008.

Doesn't have to be a gun to keep Hawkins out. Just competent.

Small sample size, but Vardy looks good.

Grimley will be a gun.

Vardy is doing very well and looks to be the type of player who the Cats have been hoping Hawkins would become and who knows how good he will become.

But Grimley will be a dead set gun :thumbsu:

Forgive the intrusion guys, just a few comments.

Vardy looks promising for sure, but the team played well also. The big difference is he's actually a genuine ruckman, not a key forward trying to become one. And as great as Saturday was, Ottens is not going to kick 5 goals every game either.

Far too early to make calls about who's better out of Vardy and Grimley also.

Well said:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

My concern is the drafting of Grimley stinks of the typical Pelchen and co trying to be a little clever. It very raraely works.

Grimley is years away from it. There has never been a 199cm+ key defender in the game. Grimley won't be the first.

Best of luck to both players though.

I think they we're trying to find the next Dustin Fletcher, athletic tall backman... however i don't think he has the footy smarts to pull it off and is a lonnnnng way from getting there. Im not saying we should have picked up Vardy, as our rucks look semi decent now. However comparing Vardy and Grimley, one is a natural footballer and the other is a lucky dip.

Vardy does look the goods. One of the better young ruckmen going around. Which is kind of karmic for Geelong because they lost Mumford who is unarguably a great ruckman.

One of the thing with Geelong youngsters, is they all look better than youngsters at most other clubs. My impression with this is they are a great team. The training, preparation and playing style of the team as a whole, make the young players excel.

Menzel, Hunt, Duncan, Cowan, Vardy, all play better because of where the club has been for the last 5 years. I think Geelong is the quiet achiever when it comes to recruiting and developing young talent.

I guess you can't help but look good when playing for this Geelong team.

A few years ago Essendon drafted a ruckman and played him as a KPD. One game, when they were desperate for a tall to play in the ruck, they played this KPD there and look what happened. Turns out he was best suited to playing in the ruck.

Anyone remember who this player is?

(Also not including this players inconsistency. That is subjective to each player and Grimley may not have inconsistency.)

Sorry folks but we stuffed this one as well. Our picks of KP players in the pelchin era is atrocious. Hate to kick a man while he's down but I made the call weeks ago that Lilse wasn't afl standard. His performance bordered on embarrasing yesterday and his goose is pretty much cooked.

I remember the Grimley/Vardy draft clearly. Vardy was one of the highest rated ruckmen of that year. Couldn't believe that we picked an untried and unproven basket ball player over a proven ruckmen. Speculate all you want over grimley, fact is that he is barely making an impact at the box Hill SECONDS whilst vardy is being talked up (with good reason) as the next big thing. I have seen absolutely nothing to suggest that Grimley will even make the grade let alone become the so called gun player some are already predicting. Pelchen had his chance with a ex basketball player in Pendelbury and stuffed that one as well.

Good riddance to pelchen, this is the man who drafted Thorpe, Dowler, and Lilse. Thorpe has since gone awol since being delisted and dowler is hardly tearing it up in the EDFL. He has in fairness had some wins lately with savage, lowden and shiels but fact is that his misses far outweigh his hits, hence him being shown the door.

Paul Salmon.

Grimley is a player the club was massively keen to get their hands on. Took him ahead of Stratton. The idea that every player has to make an impact within 18 months of being drafted is nonsense. And I tend to remember Tom Hawkins was wowing them 3 games into his career also.

He wasn't shown the door. He resigned.

Lilse could hardly be called a bust, he was pick 50 hardly a first rounder.

Plenty of time for the real Lilse to show his wares.

I don't know if your serious or not? :p But i'm guessing ur not since i put that this player was drafted "A few yrs ago", not 15 yrs ago :p

The fact we've now got people writing off Grimley on the back of someone from another club altogether having played their 3rd game astounds me.

Yeah funny isn't it. This time last year Lowden was playing in the BH ressies. Are we going to start or were fans writing him off 12 months ago? Grimley will be a good player. Agile, athletic, good ruck tapper and long in the limbs. Once he puts on more weight and becomes stronger, he'll be a surprise packet in the yrs to come.
