NEAFL - Northern Conference - Season 2012

With the money being tossed around by Southport for recruits most of their players must be amateurs otherwise they wouldn't be able to field a side under the salary cap, could they ???

Maurie, Morningside now loose Bell to Carlton, Yagmoor to The Pies,Caleb Brown to Premier league and retirements of Gough etc etc may be the hardest hit.Am very surprised Hawthorn picked up Broc Macauley. Obviously someone there sees he has the ability to make it, after not setting the world on fire with the Lions and being delisted.

I would be confident Morningside will perform again, remember they were runners up and played finals without their Best and Fairest (Nathan Kinch and other Qld reps Holman and Bonney weren't 100% fit), losses will be compensated by a few pick ups and remember they were the Under 18 premiers.
Unknown quantity is new coach Aaron Rogers who is a very bright young man who may even take Panthers to a new level !!!

Aspley look to be hard hit with loss of Shir, Brittain, Trewella, Page, Stavenuter and from what I hear Sheahan. Page, Stavenuter and Brittain had a bit of size about them and the very talented kids (Hutch, Colch and Hughes)may struggle to cover that. New recruits a little bit of an unknown quantity and who will look after Matthew Payne (I think I few midfields will be lining up on him !)
He has been able to leave everyone behind up til now but surely his legs must be ageing and a new fulltime job might slow him up !!

Lifes a beach, yes ,interesting.... Dont know what figure the salary cap is for the clubs in NEAFL, all I can gather is it is at a set figure that allows the wealthier clubs to offer much better money to prospective recruits then what the less wealthier can offer.
For example , I was talking to Broadbeach coach,Matt Angus, the other day,and he said they had interviewed 3 or 4 high profile recruits but were simply blown out of the water, player payment wise, by up to 3 times they were offering and in one particular case it was 4 times the amount. And he named the clubs as being Southport,Redlands, Aspley and Labrador. Dont get me wrong, if the clubs have the dough and are under the salary cap , you cant blame them. Maybe the salary cap is to high..... but if reduced that may well reduce the oppurtunity for clubs to get class players which helps contributes to increasing the standard of the comp.

Thunderdoc, Im not saying Morningside will slide in 2012, Im jus saying they have lost some good players to the draft etc etc, as per Mauries pre post question.I agree, with your comments and feel they will be in the mix in a very even competition .

From what I hear the Thunder are the only ones close to their cap.

Stuyd1, the salary cap is $165,000 and most of those clubs would be offering big dollars for a marquee signing and be still sitting under the cap, Broady put some big offers on the table for a certain Casey player so someone is being a bit footloose with the facts there. My point is the total player payments and if Chops is right about the NT being the only ones near officially that is a surprise but going back to my initial point maybe not.

Why would Aspley make big offers to Mugavin,Spackman and Lucy from Morningside when they have whole of Northside,Sunshine Coast area plus Ovens and Murray area.Feel sorry for young budding players

Who have they signed?

The salary cap at NEAFL level is impossible to police, however given the Sharks have lost Payne and only picked up Kiel and Burge from what I have heard then you could argue that their player budget is going to be less than 2011.

None of the other names linked to the Sharks ie Hudson, McCauley, Houlihan, Hunter seem to have come through.

I am sure there are other blokes that I have not heard about as I cannot imagine the Sharks missing the finals 2 years running frankly, and I am sure Cotter has been a busy boy these last couple of months.

How do you know they have had a crack at those Morningside boys? Good luck getting them, in my experience the Panthers are masters of fostering a culture of loyalty. None will leave.

Meant to have recruited Shaun Harvey (Brent Harveys brother of kangaroos fame) Good player, that has revelled in lower level leagues in country victoria over the past few seasons, getting mega bucks but earning the bucks by performing.Feedback from these clubs is they became disgruntled with him, as he did not socialize at all, or attend club functions/promotions during the season.Word is this info is correct, but regardless, he is a good player and should go ok at the NEAFL level.

Broadbeach, have kept same list minus a couple and will add more strength to build on their promosing 2011.

Dezario, ur pretty much on the money here. Obviously they have lost Zorko and Walton. Also some 3 or 4 players that were fringe players, not regular senior players, and Fulton.
Have recruited two highly rated players from Victoria, who are onballers and played at senior Vfl level. One of them played in the Alberton league for the past 2 seasons and won the club B &F both seasons and won the league B & F this year. The other guy was considered very unlucky not to have been drafted 3 odd years ago by Geelong. Apparently a good player.Obviously, the club has got these guys to fill the void left by the departures of Zorko and Walton.
In addition, rumours about Eagle going back to Shepparton United seem to be untrue and he should
be playing for the Cats come 2012.
Also. I would not be surprised if the Cats have a couple of other surprises , recruitment wise.
Along with their current list and the coaching staffs quality, I feel Broadbeach will be a big player come season 2012.
And watch big Mitch Brewer, still only 19, improved out of sight in 2011, gaining the attraction of AFL talent scouts.Foxy, the fitness coach has been working on him in the off season apparently with great results and if Mitch can improve to the degree he improved in 2011, I predict he will be a huge chance to be drafted.
Remember guys, im a Broadbeach supporter, so apologizes for talking it up. But thats what u do when u want ur club to have success.

Might be stretching it a little here but would not surprise at all if the NEAFL gold coast sides benefit from having mates of blokes drafted who are happy to come up, live the lifestyle for a while and hang out with their mate who has been drafted. As long as work could be sorted. Be a bit of an adventure.

mugsy has played at aspley back in 07 & 08. hornets should chase him, he kicked 85 goals in one of those years. they havent had anyone get close to that since.

Rumour has it that a Benjamin Walters may be returning to H&A Oval in 2012.... ?

Got a bit of an odd question for you fellow Northern Conference followers. Has anyone happened to notice the condition of your local club's playing surface? The reason I ask is that, I was walking past Redlands main oval the other day and noticed how poorly kept it is. I thought it was in fantastic nick for the northern conference GF, but now it is patchy, overgrown and dry. I don't believe cricket is played on that surface either. So I'm wondering is it just a case of Redlands not taking care of their ground, or is this the case at most grounds?
