Player Watch Ned McHenry - Delisted

This is the problem. Robbie Gray was pick 55. Not too many on that Draft list after McHenry was taken that stand out to me.

Rowbottom is massively ahead of McHenry and even though I am not the biggest Duursma fan, he's ahead of McHenry too.

If we could trade McHenry for either, we'd do it in a heart beat.

Couldn't disagree more. If you can't see his lack of skills on display then you're not watching him closely enough.

I've never seen a player consistently fumble the ball as much as what Ned does. Even catching a simple handball is a challenge for Ned at times.

I completely agree, his skill set is below AFL standard.

He has zero penetration with his kick, constantly fumbles and makes poor decisions with the ball.

He's hit the magic "50 game mark", but he's just not improved. If we delisted him, no other club in the AFL would be giving him a 2nd chance.

Sparrow too, given his finals series last year.

Let's be honest here. He is shit and is only getting a game because our list is crap and the one decent small we had we gave to Geelong as he snorted a few lines. Rachele, Rankine will take his spot and he will be eventually delisted.

Should've packaged the Jones/Ned picks to move up..
Our footy department actually talent identified both of these guys stamping them worthy of first round selection..

Rozee best on ground.

Jones/Ned playing a key role anchoring us at the bottom of the ladder.

What is depressing is knowing that we could have had Rowbottom and Butters on our list instead of McHenry and Jones.

But apparently he is a great kid off the field, comes from a great family and got every maths question right that Hamish asked him.

Shame none of the maths questions were:

Solve for x, where x is the ideal number of opposition players in the immediate vicinity of your intented pass recipient.

x=?

a) 0
b) 1
c) 2+
d) Kick ootf

The rationale behind giving players a block of time and games to develop properly is sound. But surely once that period (50 games) is over it's fair and reasonable to begin judging their performances and reacting accordingly. Also, some reflection of what that player has achieved over that time period is warranted i.e. has the player showed any glimpses and what are their strengths/upsides?

Frampton struggled up forward and the coaching team reacted accordingly dropping him. He built his form in the SANFL and they brought him back in until he spudded it up again. Rinse and repeat a few times and now we have put a line through him up forward. Now we're trying him down back. Perfectly logical decision-making to try and develop a player. What are we doing with Ned? Banging our heads against the wall hoping he will come good with absolutely no consequences for his actions?

I could good through Ned's laundry list of deficiencies but you perfectly summarise it in the fact that he just isn't a footballer. Has zero footballing nous and no skills to become one. The only thing Ned brings is effort, no result.

I can only hope the 50 games free pass has expired.

Just consider Riley Knight is better than this guy and we delisted him and used a first rounder on Ned. ****ing hell.

I've watched him for 50 games! 50 games!! In those games he reminds me of a headless chook how he runs around ineffectively.

The best description I ever saw of him was a dog chasing cars.

Looks intense and intimidating while he's chasing, but with ball in hand he is lost.

The coaches think his contributions are very valuable. He was 10th in the B&F last year and they've never shown an inkling to drop him.

I suspect they like how he is performing which means we're stuck with him for a long time

Bring in Rachelle, Rankine and McAdam into last nights team and there is no place for McHenry. None.

Oh I know you're right, I know they rate him. It's just so painful to watch and is going to be even morseso for years to come.

Valuing forward pressure over scoreboard influence is wrong imo but is understandable, my irk is that he isn't even good in that aspect. Charlie Cameron is fantastic at forward pressure with his electric speed, agility and strength. Opposition players shat themselves when they have the ball around him because he is so capable. Ned has none of those physical gifts nor the nous to be in the right spots at the right time.

The character assassination is ridiculous. "He hasn't racked up a 30+ in his first 50 games". FFS. Have you seen the position he plays? His Showdown game was a poor game for him, but he wasn't the only one.

He has contributed positively enough throughout his first 50 games or so to suggest he has a role to play at AFL level. Like many on the Crows list, he isn't consistent yet and he is never going to be a superstar. It's likely he played a fair portion of this season managing injury as well - which he'll have to do and do well in the future, but perhaps hadn't experienced that yet.

If the Crows are to move up the ladder, there is likely just one spot for one of McHenry, Murphy or Rowe in the best 22 and you could make a case for each and each probably has an AFL career ahead of them somewhere. Out of those three, who all try, commit and strive to get the best out of themselves, I'd probably pick McHenry if I could only choose one for Round 1, 2023. He will and should continue to get better and more consistent and I think we'll appreciate him in the future, if all goes to plan, and Rachele is doing Rachele things, Rankine is doing Rankine things, Thilthorpe is doing Thilthorpe things and McHenry is busting his boil to keep the ball down our end so these players have more opportunities.
I'd probably pick Murphy (and I don't rate him highly either). Mchenry and Rowe can go.

We have plenty of passengers but Ned is in that list most weeks. He is a "locker room" inclusion.

Seriously??? This guy is a 1st round pick though. He is nowhere near the mark for that and never will be. No AFL quality skills whatsoever and that will never change. If they keep on wasting our 1st round picks on players like this we'll be going nowhere for a very long time.

This is about right I think. Now that he's on the list I don't think it's particularly relevant when he was drafted, and I think McHenry will stay in the team as a defense/pressure focused player in the forward half while Rowe is almost certainly gone and Murphy will probably be forced out when we have better small forward options. He wouldn't go first round if we did the draft again but I think the coaching staff at the club value his contributions.
If the coaching staff value his contribution yet we continue to finish bottom 6 each yr with Ned being an obvious passenger does that make the coaches assessment correct?

I've been on the fence for a while, wondering if he will settle into the speed of the game.

Nope. He doesn't have it.
I was a big fan of his first year in the sanfl and love his tenacity. But he is still doing stupid things that i was willing to be patient with early on. Can't keep pumping games into him, rowie and Murphy. They aren't taking us forward or worrying any opposition defenders.

Club needs to be brave and roll the dice on newchurch for one of those spots next year. He has sone flaws but at least his weapons will trouble his opponents.

You can excuse the first round draft pick (he was projected in most experts top 20), but you can't excuse the automatic best 22 selection each week.
That's the scary part for me, the coaches think he is undropable, even with his bung knee
He hasn't improved at all throughout the year, if fact, it looks like he has gone backwards
