I can only assume you went never to the shed. It's like chalk and cheese, the Magarey Room is a pale comparison.
The whole set up now is frankly amateurish. Sure the room's nice but it lacks atmosphere, the access to players poor, the presentations are over in minutes, the raffles (yes the raffles) are pathetic and supporter involvement zero. Best on ground voting gone, player photos far and few between, no tables to sit around and have a chat about the game and as for having a beer, forget that. You're treated like cattle in a stock yard and herded out as quickly as possible.
Some here may say who cares but I actually looked forward to having an enjoyable drink with friends I only see post game before they disperse to the suburbs. The set up now discourages such interactions.
It all depends on what you want out of a game day experience but "More than compensates," is so far off the mark to what we once had.
The old Shed was great. Players and coaches mingled with supporters and you can have a proper chat with them.

But the last couple of years at West Lakes it became a segregated event. Players in the upstairs area, with family, club employees and sponsors and only presented on stage for the public downstairs.

No different to Margarey Room now.

A bit of that, but I doubt few clubs have players mingle freely now in an aftermatch.

Aftermatch rehab is more important now and the night after a game is the one time of the week the players can mentally switch off.

As any sport becomes more professional, physical access to the players becomes less.

Nope, that was all Rob Chapman doing.

He didn’t care for the grass roots supporter. He only showed interest in you if you were a corporate sponsor.
Trigg & Chapman were both similar in this respect.

I have heard stories from a few people of Chapman flat out ignoring members when attempting to interact with him once he found out they weren't corporates.

Hate to tell you this, but I don't think the players are interested in doing it either - the handful of Magarey Room things I've been to have had two players come up from the rooms, immediately do a short Q&A, then run back down to the rooms again as quickly as possible.

After a game is a shit time with recovery the major focus.

That's a good point, I think those days are over at AFL level. Things like family days will continue but much more controlled.

I think we really only need something small in terms of a members facility and that could be overlooking Thebarton for example. It might be something that doesn't even open all the time, just for AFL trainings and SANFL match days.

Anything AFL match related is better off in the city where you can have flexibility.

That’s to be expected when the club, led by Trigg and Chapman developed a culture where the club feels like it is bigger than the fan base.

If the club developed a culture where the players appreciated the members and supporters, they would actively agree to hang around longer than they were required as everyone would feel part of the club.

We really are only a club in name, not spirit.

Can't blame them, they are not interested in making small talk with supporters drinking water and Powerade. Most either want to go home or head out for drinks where they can hook up with someone.
