Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

I know getting rid of the advertising in total is not a commercial reality.

However when the advertising has nothing to do with Footy, not even anything to do with sport. i speak of the Biggest ad on the page which currently is for Big Pond Music. Then that gets users offside. IF the ad was for Big Pond Sport or something relevant to the site. It would be much better.

Other sporting websites get around Advertising needs by giving them naming rights to sections of the site. (T-mobile rookie report on NBA.com for example)

Exactly. Adidas Power Rankings as well. Its not encroaching on the page put when you go to click the link and then read the text you still get the adidas exposure still, but its not bloody annoying!

As all you want to do is look away from the massive Bigpond music ad.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

BAH HAHAHAHAHA.

There is also a link on the afl.com.au site to give feedback so I went for a look but I cant write anything. There is no text box AT ALL just a submit button so I clicked it and it thanked me for my contribution.

Although I do use Firefox 2.0 so I'm probably not important enough or something. And yup, I refreshed it 4 times.

HOPELESS.

I can just imagine the Telstra office. "Wow, this is good, No one is complaining through our new beta feedback system, fantastic guys you've done a great job."

PS. Also note the extra ad up the top now!

EDIT: Well it works now. But still. . . .

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

EDIT:: Okay, so I just realised that Q5 and Q6 reffered to extra time, and was not a glitch in the system... well surely to avoid the problem it should be labelled ET1 and ET2?!
Don't correct the people who coded that mate. They all know it takes six quarters to make a whole.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

SLDavey,

I didn't get an overwhelming response from the group, so was wondering if you could assist Treeman and myself (and probably others) with the problem below.....

Me too. Tried to listen through AFL.com.au today and it did exactly as you describe above. I'm using Firefox 2.0.

We started a thread about this b4 the Hawks game as well. Eventually, a few PC users were able to listen when they were given a link from last week's game. There were a few mac users there who couldn't get anything, and still can't.

im also in that position when i use Firefox. however when i use explorer the voices on the radio become very high pitched and quick

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Match replay service not working again. This is ridiculous. When I select the replay I want to watch (via the AFL site) it just takes me to a blank bigpond page. No video options are available at all (even when using the "search" menu on the right hand side of the page), which is exactly what it was doing last weekend.

i am on a mac, so this may be of little use to most but i have been able to get the audio working. its a work around since i never have been able to get windowns media to stream properly. once i click the link and it fails to load i have been cutting and pasting the link (it seems to have too much in it or maybe somethign that only pcs can read) and then editing out the first part of the string so it only reads: http://wm9.streaming.telstra.com/ucs-wh_afl0live1

that seems to work just fine. other than that i would try and update your winndows media players, this might resovle the issue.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Sandy, while I appreciate you've come here looking for feedback... it's now your responsibility to integrate or at least consider that feedback. A reporter should never ask a question they're not willing to print the answer to.

Also, you stated that Firefox accounts for some 2% of your users. That's utter crap and you know it is. If indeed your counters are telling you that it's because people use FF and it doesn't work so 'frustratingly' login with IE on following occasions. That doesn't fix the problem.

You need to ensure your site will work with Mozilla/Opera etc. Remember to Validate code constantly, you can use Firefox with the developers toolbar installed to validate in real-time. It's fantastic. If your code works with the w3.org validation tools via FF then you'll have no problems with IE. Actually, it will probably run quicker and more reliably. You're using ASPX code which is a huge nono.... you really should be using PHP but I guess it's all to do with the Microsoft/Telstra relationship.

I think you need to sitdown and entirely rethink the main entry page however. It's a mess, you've got content all over the place and then banners in and around content areas. It's really hard to understand. I have to keep 'looking' for things I used the day before. That's not good.

Also Sandy.... will you continue supporting the sportal wapsite? I know a lot of their content is from AFL.com.au.... are you related to the interface development of that? The site I refer to is wapafl.sportal.com.au. You also NEED to create a couple different links to your mobile version. Normal ones are wap.afl.com.au or www.afl.com.au/handheld/. The one you have now is a little obscute and hard to find.

Thanks again.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Ari, I agree with you on cross-browser compatibility... it is very average at best.

But this : "You're using ASPX code which is a huge nono..." ... is just nothing to do with the problem. We develop a lot of sites in ASP.Net and have no browser compatability issues at all. You just need to do your testing.

And you're right... once they get the cross-browser stuff working, Mozilla will be both faster and more reliable.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

My comments on Live Statistics Flash Pages

1. Iy is a real pain having to scroll down the player stats list. Why can't you have 22 players displayed all the time.
2. The pitch view is pretty useless once the game starts. If there was match up moves and/or interchange. We know they do record this data because it comes up on the TV broadcast.
3. The play by play game maps just don't make sense to me

On the upside, the scoring play by play list is a good addition. :thumbsu:

Also, when we bring up players profile/match up, any chance of getting their season or career averages in the stats displayed.

I assume the reliability and performance of the feed is going to improve

He has done that numerous times...back when this thread was constructive. It’s pretty much jumped the shark now.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

How do I actually join BigPond as an international subscriber who doesn't want to sign up to their broadband? You know, just to watch match replays and other stuff?

Last year it was easy, cost me about 60 bucks for the season. But there doesn't seem to be any link on afl.com which allows me to do this again.

There's a resonably expected feature that you wish to find on AFL.com.au but you can't find it? Hahaha, surely you jest!

I noticed that helpful link had gone from the AFL site. It does make it a bit difficult to subscribe! I'm sure the AFL/Bigpond's respective finance departments would love to hear that!

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

I am using Explorer, so it's not a problem exclusive to FireFox users.

Yeah I have the same problem in both IE and Firefox - couldn't get any radio streams working last weekend. Worked last year no problems though. I haven't changed IE since then (as I never use it) or Media Player, but Firefox I've upgraded to v2 - that the only difference I can think of to last year. I don't remember if last year the radio streams played in an embedded media player (like it is now), or opened directly in Media Player (like SEN and others do) - would this make a difference does anyone know? (if it has changed??)

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

I use Firefox exclusively, unless for some reason I have to load something up in IE. My guess would be that your figure of 2% using Firefox is grossly incorrect.

One change I would like to see is to the fixture page. Get rid of the blue tickets logo which has been needlessly placed under every single match. All 8 links point to the same page, so why is it needed 8 times? Have just one and put it on the same line as the Round dropdown list, preferably on the far right.

Secondly, how about add a dropdown list for the teams. Give me the option to see who's playing who in a given round (currently available), and the option to see who a given team plays across all 22 rounds (currently unavailable).

Agreed. Wasn't there a survey done last year that showed over 10% of Australians use FF.

That annoys me to no end. You have to go to the teams site to do it and that takes an extra half an hour (gross exaggeration) to load.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

I was wondering if it is possible to get the Time on Ground stat (TOG) into the Live Statistics Flash Pages somwhere.
