Yep - I reckon relying on what Rucci has to say on the matter is akin to going to him for marriage counselling.

Of all the recent head and assistant coaching appointments across the AFL, how many have seen the most speculated about applicant get the job? Can't really think of any. Nobody had a clue about Ben Hart to Collingwood until it actually happened. I'd like to think our club has been working hard behind the scenes and will come out and surprise us with some good appointments. Perhaps quietly poaching a Brendan Lade or something like that. We'll wait and see I guess.

So the big fish we're obtaining is Aryes? Wow we are in some trouble

Do we have hand out money to give out to good coaches?

What about Bailey? any word on him? Would love him to be the Mid coach

Why did anyone genuinely believe we were getting Watters? What possible reason would a Collingwood assistant coach have to come to Port Adelaide? Walsh had some legs because of the Port Adelaide connection, but Watters was a pipedream.

Dunno about Ayres. I'm sure he'd be a good defensive coach, but I'm reluctant to say I actually want him because I can't stand him.

I would like to know what exactly would make Ayres a bad pick up, Has coached to an AFL gf, AFL prelims and now an undefeated VFL year. And maybe he can teach Chaplin not to be afraid of shadows in the back line, I have no objection to a man who clearly has the credentials and mullet to go with coaching at Port

I think we can safely say anything Rucci says on this matter is just speculation and he's probably no better informed than we are. Had myself so pumped up over Walsh and Watters only for both to fall down. I'll just wait for the club to announce something.

Bearing that in mind Rucci is reporting that Port have said they have not spoken to, and do not intend to speak to, Gary Ayres.

Also:
-His distaste for SA
-The irrelevance of a Showdown because it's between two irrelevant non-victorian teams.
-Got sacked for Craig etc.

By the way, I love how the local media frame every Crow assistant coach defection as 'going off to a new environment to learn the trade/gain experience before returning home'. At this rate they'll have both Goodwin and Hart as duel head coaches in about 3 years.

Maybe Hart is more accomplished than some here think. The best team in the comp obviously see something in him. Perhaps it was entirely his call to leave rather than what the popular version of events would have us believe, ie him not being offered a new contract. After all their recent player defections the last thing Steven "Mr PR Spin" Trigg would want is the public perception of a dusgruntled club great walking from the coaches box.

If we get him, don't expect to win showdowns again.

FFS he wont be the head coach, he will be the defence coach a part of the ground where he played 250 games and won 2 Norm Smith medals. Named me a better credentialed ex defender who is or still wants to be coaching in any capacity at AFL level. -- Bruce Doull is still happy running his news agency.

Your Showdown assumption is completely wrong. Crows players have criticised Ayres for putting too much emphasis and pressure on winning showdowns. When Craig came on board he down played the importance of showdowns, refused to get involved in publicly backing them, and Port home Showdown crowds plummeted from 50,000+ to 31,000 as a result.

And as I said above, he wont be head coach, so the ability to win or lose them falls on Primus, not Ayres, if he takes the gig as an assistant coach.

Many people on this board have said our defence and our players all over the ground, aren't hard enough and tough enough, don't have enough mongrel and aren't physically big enough. You can criticise Ayres about a lot of thing, but as a player and coach you can't criticise about those areas I mentioned above.

I love this bit. The irony of it is that Ayers wanted them to get better at Showdown is that they are the closest thing to finals without paying finals.

Craig came in and was lauded for playing down the importance of winning big games and as a result they became terrible at winning big games lol.

I definitely don't have anything against Ayres as an assistant, and I think he would be motivated to return a few of the daggers that were stuck in his back when he left Cowtown. Don't buy into the `everything bad that ever happened at AFC was Gary Ayres' fault' line that was so popular previously.

I thought Aryes was good without being brilliant.

He was crucified in the media here, especially over the imfamour McLeod the HBF, how dare he play him there, I think Craig did it for how many years however and it was ok?

Saying that how long did it take Geelong and Adelaide to recover after his departure? Geelong awhile Adelaide not so much? His assistant stint at Essendon wasn't great either though was it

According to a rumour on AFL Teams on Fox, Bailey is likely to head to the hybrids as a senior assistant.

Without jumping the gun (ok maybe I am), if we get overlooked by all of these guys in preference for other clubs that have placed similarly outside of the 8 as us and have no more money to throw at them, it may well reflect the very negative, hopeless perception that people currently have of Port and of Primus' tenure here. God, I hope that's not the case.

A lot of BF posters reckon it's easy to coach and win games - what about a composite group to act as one assistant coach - for a $100k per year and a supply of beer, pies and chips thrown in.:D

I can definitely fulfil the skyping role from afar ;). Might have trouble not giving Ryan McMillan a long distance whack over the heard though every time he says "obviously, [player name] is really important to us..........."

So who are we going to throw all this money at that the AFL gave us? We need a big fish and he have the money to get it.

Typical of our new CEO, wouldn't surprise me if he gave the 3mil to Whicker

Not sure who we have been overlooked by at this stage? Neil Craig and maybe Dean Bailey? The majority of movements have been senior coaching appointments, and because of this it's going to be challenging to land coaches. We will be in a better position to judge the hopeless perception of the club after the club announce the assistants. Must admit I was excited when the names Walsh and Watters were linked to us, that excitement has abated.

I guess if the Crows manage to get one of Bailey or Eade and we miss out on the other, then it would be a bitter pill to swallow, given the amount of time and planning we have had for this.

Let's wait and see, but it would be a kick in the guts for Matty if nothing comes through and he is left to pick up first year assistants only.

I wonder if Primus' relationship with Lade is still strong enough to knock on his door and ask him to join as one of two midfield/ruck coaches. Ladey always indicated that his wife was not the happiest in Melbourne. He's spent the past 2 years there and I was under the impression he had not planned to stay in Victoria for longer than he needed.

Walsh won't be coming on board. He will be accepting the 500k to stay with the eagles.
Bailey should be confirmed as coming on board soon as an assistant
And the other good news for power fans is, if watters doesn't get the saints job he will be coming on board as an assistant at the power
