Had a few bevvies with a senior official of another SANFL club tonight, and some news going around them is that Tony Bamford has aspirations of joining the Power's coaching team some time in the future.

Not quite the proven experienced sort of person that we should be looking at, but thought I'd post it anyway.

Bamford has done a great job with the Maggies, especially bringing the kids through. I would welcome him with open arms at the Power.

I would hate for the Maggies to lose him just when they are coming good though.

Had a dream and we had Mick Malthouse as our assistaint,
it was a good dream

Withe a happy ending ? :p

Bamford is a fairly hard guy in some respects from what I've heard, and has upset a few people in his handling of things. Both past and present footballers, not to mention other coaches (Meady, anyone ?).

Don't know his relationship with Primus et al.

Haha i wish. (i assume you are refering to the port assistant and not current st.kilda player)

My sources aren't that close to the club, in fact it looks like my sources could be wrong on the Bailey front.

In regards to saints job, im not too sure who i want, just happy with Lyon gone, as the place needed a freshen up after a few very demanding years

You're not wrong yet.

Seems the Bailey to Richmond rumour originated from sportsnewsfirst which has a worse reputation than 3AlwaysWrong.

Bailey: First ever stint as an assistant coach in AFL at Port, prior to that he was a development coach at Essendon.
Walsh: First ever stint as an assistant coach in AFL at Port. Was a fitness and condition coach at Geelong prior to joining.
Clarkson: First ever stint as an assistant coach in AFL at Port. He came via Centrals (SANFL), St Kilda (VFL) and Werribee (VFL).

Hardly surprising that we have gone backwards since we stopped developing our own.
Question: If we go after coaches that have failed elsewhere is it any different to Mark Williams drafting so many delisted players?
Occasionally you may get lucky, occasionally.

The assistants we are hoping for have not failed elsewhere though.

Sure Bailey failed as a senior coach (or maybe he just needed more time) but he was a successful assistant coach.

Walsh is a very successful assistant coach

Watters is a very successful assistant etc. etc.

They will cost a lot more than the ones we develop and if they are proven they will be offered money we just cannot afford by other clubs.
If we aspire to be second best we will always be second best and there are no prises for coming second. Never have been never will be.

IMO we seriously need to look sideways and try to bring in strong characters to the club. A Chris Johnson or magic McLean type will serve us very well if we can entice them. There are heaps more in the various leagues around the country as well as ambitious recently retired players.
We have a financial challenge? Good, lets deal with it in our own way instead of constantly whinging and whining.

From the funds that we have been provided, we don't have such a dire financial problem anymore - it's still there to a small extent, but not insurmountable.

What we actually have is an image and a residual stench problem that must be changed. Whether the people in the industry see that as temporary or part of the cycle and actually know that the club environment is fine, rather than be a media driven whipping-boy fest - only time will tell.

...
But the fix is only temporary and the issue will resurface given time.
We need to get a proper system in place. One that develops off field staff as well as on field staff (players).

I have a big question for the long term Port supporters on here.

What made Port so successful in the past? Was it Central type money or was it looking after and developing players mixed in with a bit of smart recruiting?
Did it also have something to do with having the right people on board, off field, or was it stealing coaches from other teams?

For the PAFC, it has never been about excess money - there are many instances in my time of following the club for nearly 50 years where we went close to the wall - and we have been successful despite this situation.

It's about winning, winning and then winning - this comes from having the right people in charge who actually know football, making it the place to be and having a non-wielding, consistent football message and culture - the message of 'this is how we do it, and if you don't like it or don't want to comply, then piss off'.

We have been able to this in the SNAFL and in the early AFL days, but the exponentially increasing competitive and commercial nature and the need for higher quality people makes it harder to find them, develop them and keep them.

This was easy in the SNAFL, but in the AFL it is more competitive obviously and we as against equally strong cultural clubs, different rules, and in a more commercial environment the access to easy big money has taken a toll - and the $ and support gap is such that we and the other unfashionable Vic clubs will never bridge.

Like it or not, we and the other unfashionable Vic clubs will always be on some sort of drip-feed or handouts - Australia is not big enough to generate $ and people support for 18 clubs to the extent of even the mid-level Vic clubs. It could be possible if Australian Football was the only major winter sport around the country.

Any chance that KT will be able to talk Bassett onboard?

You've pretty well posted what I've wanted to say in this thread *PAF. We don't need to recruit a big name, over priced assistant to be considered successful. There are a plethora of ex footballers to choose quality candidates from.

Would like to get Bassett on board. Would be a major coup.

Strangely, in this modern professional era, he is a loyal club (/franchise) man to Adelaide, so would not be suprised if we couldn't get him to budge. The only chance would be if he changes his mindset as AFC coach-in-waiting to wanting to get some AFL experience...

At this point in time I would be happy just to have a full complement of AFL-experienced/knowledgeable coaches so that we are at least on par with other clubs.

Milburn or Mooney would be great, and I'm sure there are plenty of guys fresh out of the game with good ideas.

Still would like some experience and fresh ideas, so a mix of both would be ideal. Watters would be a great get simply to send a message that someone from a successful outfit is willing to make the move and help strengthen a developing list.

Primus in an interview post-season said they had even then spoken to a number of people, some were interested in developing a list, some weren't.

Well obviously if you've heard some inside word then you trump me, but reading his articles on the Davis situation etc. it seemed that he was very gung-ho Adelaide Crows.

Nathan Bassett said:
I invested a big part of my football life at the Adelaide Football Club and I don't like to see people negatively impact it. You have just made a decision that has angered me more than any other in the football world this year.

Obviously he may hold different views privately...

I know I'm on the Ayres band wagon but here is another reason why.

Last week in the VFL GF Port Melbourne were down 5 goals to 1 in the first quarter before going to the break 5 goals to 2 down.

Last night on ABC24's Contact Sports program, they showed Ayres 1/4 time speech which ABC 1 Melbourne showed in their telecast last Sunday.

It starts from about 1:50 and goes for 2 minutes or so. Then Ayres is interviewed about his thoughts preveiwing todday's AFL GF. The 1/4 speech was bloody impressive, strong, measured, clear, authorative and encouraging of his players. His analysis of the AFL comp shows he is a good analyst and that he is keen to get back into the AFL system Watch him on ABC iView at
