Cripps, Walsh, McKay, Weitering has the hallmarks of a team to bring in Ross to build around. The problem is St Kilda had another half dozen of that class and Freo at least a few more.

Ross would have to import all his usual role players too. The Carlton role playing cupboard is Ed Curnow, maybe Owies, Plowman I guess and that's about it. Hence why they don't win games.

If they do go with a new coach I'd go with someone with a focus on development and try to see what they can get from Dow, O'Brien, Stocker, SPS, Kemp and Philp.

Fogarty and Cuningham (once back from injury which might be 2023) look the best 3rd and 4th midfield options until young guys come on. It's hard to not see some improvement from Williams, Saad, Martin and McGovern (hard to get much less). So there's some promise.

Strip the game plan back and improve the defensive work rate and surely the team gets better. The question is how do you do that without throwing out what is actually some decent ball movement at times.

Carlton would have to be the most unattractive coaching job in the league.

Fanbase calling for teague’s head after a season and a half(?), after giving Bolton the same amount of time.

Few other positions might be available soon.

I mean seriously if you’re Yze why would you bother applying.

3 years x $800k vs the $200k he is probably on now.

Crows supporters don’t rate him, but he did well getting an average list into a Grand Final. He’s now doing good things at Sydney.

Would be happy for him to replace either Teague or Barker.

Get good assistants around him, and not the dross we did, and he'll go alright. Not exactly the type of coach that'll make players run harder, and dig in deeper, but he's got a good grasp of strategy.

As well as a competent GM, and whatever you do, don't hire Brett Burton.

Historically, the league approach was to strip-mine the assistant coaches out of the top side(s).
So what's that - Andrew McQualter or Adam Kingsley?
Maybe you crack at James Rahilly or even Matthew Knights? (Now there's a name! Has he had a Ratten like rebirth yet?)
And if Melbourne finish the season like they started it - they'll feel it too.

I know less than nothing, but would be a bit surprised if Carlton went a 3rd rookie coach in succession? Are we so certain Teague "has the full support of the board"? Maybe they keep him another year rather than re-rookie and start a new plan again?

So, same wage as somewhere else but with a crap list and a rabid fanbase who overrate their crap list but can end your senior coaching career after a bad couple of games.

Yeah nah I think i’d rather wait and work somewhere better thanks.

Bolton had three and half years as senior coach.

It’s entirely possible both Bolton and Teague are rubbish coaches, just like Bailey and Neeld were.
Bolton was afforded lots of time with some of the worst circumstances you'll ever see. Did some things right, won more games than the list deserved early. But then just couldn't get it together. I don't think he was actively terrible but clearly wasn't good enough to keep going in the job.

Bailey was a decent coach who turned a bad list in to mid table team but then got bought down by internal dysfunction and crapness. He was more similar to a less successful Brett Ratten. Or maybe an Alan Richardson. Or any number of just ok coaches who landed at bad clubs.

Neeld got a bad club and decided to make it worse. I almost kind of feel for him at times but he knew he'd been given a crap deal and went all out to fix it. Unfortunately if you go 100% the wrong way you'll end in the disaster that he did.

Teague's a fascinating one because from the outside he's been given a decent crack at it in many ways. He has talented experienced players. Carlton seem to have invested in facilities, fitness staff and so on. Everyone's operating under the same soft cap. Obviously the recruiting hasn't been great but it's hardly devoid of talent.

The big gap at Carlton seems to be assistant coaches but good senior coaches usually attract good assistants. Teague should've had his senior assistant and promising young assistants lined up. Maybe that's an issue when you promote a caretaker who doesn't get to sweep the broom? My guess is Carlton follow the model of other teams - Richmond, Coll, Melb - and back Teague in for 1 more year with new assistants. But good luck to the board making that call.

Three and a half, lol. didnt realise it was that long.

Of course its possible they are both crap coaches. Harsh on Bolton though. SOS kept bringing in turd and the fans expected gold to come from it.

Very poor recruiting in those days, what was bolton supposed to do.

Target Sam Mitchell, might get him or shake Clarkson loose.

I don't know why Sam Mitchell is so highly sought after. I mean he may have a good tactical brain, I am not sure, but as a player even his teammates didn't like him much and that is not a good quality to have if you want to be a senior coach.

How many assistant coaches never become head coaches?

I assume the vast majority.

what’s your point?

if you’re trying to say senior positions are rare than all the more reason to wait for an employer who won’t sack you because you missed finals for two years while fielding below average teams.

Mark Williams should at least be considered in my opinion. It still surprises me that he hasn't coached after being overlooked by GWS after Sheedy left, a team that many believed he was practically coaching with Sheedy the high profile face of the club.
A teacher by professional, Williams has been praised for his working relationship with Dustin Martin prior to Martin reaching best player in the competition status.
Currently at Melbourne this year as a support to Goodwin, Williams can teach both skills and would still be tactically in tune with the modern game.
He'd be a risk no doubt but so is any appointment.

Don’t fall in love with the bloke that fills in after you sack the coach. carlton did it with Teague, north did it with Shaw, Richmond unleashed the geisch. It never works. But clubs get sucked in ....” the boys love him. Ohh the boys really respond to him. He’s a players coach.” What’s it called ? The new coach bounce. No.The boys were just happy to get rid of the coach and then soon revert back to their old habits.

Agree 100%, outside of Paul Ross I can't recall too many occasions where hiring the interim coach full time has worked long term.

If you get to the point where you’re gonna be an AFL coach, you’re a very driven individual.

This isn’t how driven people think. They have self belief - they’re the one that is gonna come in and do what nobody else could.

Totally agree.
Never the most liked player in his team by a long way.
