New Coach

Thanks Turtleman.

Can you give us a summary of press conference - how many years is he signed for, who are our assistants, any hint of direction he's looking for, what happened to Chocco etc.

What did he say at the press conference?

Looks like Eade has the job at North and Royal might now never get a chance to coach at senior level after about six unsuccessful applications. I hope he doesn't crack the s**ts with the club. He is a Team of the Century member after all.

Press Conference

Just finished.
It's a three year appointment. He will work at putting his committee together over the next few weeks. He has some ideas but didn't elaborate. Also he said that there wont be a lot of major differences in the way the team plays but he will put his stamp upon the group, that he will introduce some of his philosophies.
He beat Royal and Laidley for the top job.
He also stated that if he hadn't secured the senior coaching position he was going to stay on at the Bulldogs. He was excited by the talent of the Bulldogs list and he said even though they wouldn't admit it there would be alot of coaches out there that would love to have such a talented list at their disposal.
Also he said as far as trades go you wouldn't have to be Eienstein to work out we wouldn't be trading for a rover. we need height in key positions. Also we would continue to draft the best possible talent which is a club philosophy.
He also stated that he still talks with Terry Wallet several times a week and will use him as a resource down the track.
That's all I can remember at the minute. I am sure you will hear more in the next day or two and I will keep you all updated when i hear more.
I suppose the next thing we will look forward to is who he has as assistannts.

Thanks for the info Turtleman.

I left for Indiana and Ohio about an hour after the Grand Final ended and just got back about 50 minutes ago so I'm just beginning to catch up on the news.

I'll be awaiting the opinions of those wiser than my good self as to the merits of this appointment.

Says he isnt going to change the gameplan much. :(

Surely after watching Brisbane and Collingwood eliminate their 'freewheeling' opponents and produce the first close fought GF in years, Rhodes has got to realise that accountable, contest-oriented play is the way to win finals footy?

These are gameplans honed by multi-premiership winning coaches, not "match day" tacticians like Wallace and Eade.

Is it coincidence that Pagan, Blight and Matthews, who account for most of the recent premierships between them play contest oriented, long kicking, direct footy?

RANT RANT RANT

and furthermore, GRANT TO CHB!!!!

Rohde actually used the term "accountability" tonight as he was discussing the midfield :)

He also said he would be looking for tall forwards :D

Scott Cummings will probably be looking for his fifth club

I think because Rhode was the head of development of the younger players a few of the older guys may be in a bit of trouble. Some very tough decisions need to be made on the list and soon.I hope Rhode proves me wrong and turns out to be the guy who will make the tough decisions. At the moment I fear he may be too close to some of the players to make the decisions required.

Best thing he can do is to make the tough decisions early and get them out the way.

I'll be eagerly watching what transpires with the assistant staff he appoints.

Good luck to him.

If you read the articles on the afl site he sounds like he knows that. He said something along the lines of "the players love me now and thats great but its not my job to be loved its my job to lead the club". Also said his new role would "change the dynamic" he had with the players.

Sounds like he knows he has to be tough.

Before he was selected I was worried that he didnt have the steel in his eyes. After today I reckon he just might.

Great observation stefoid. I thought Wallace prepared well for a game, but was lost he had to change tactics during the match.
Eg there was no Plan B.

Jakovich, Cook....

Oh my God!

At least they mighy star for us in the finals like Cookie did in 97.

I also heard Rohde speaking somewhere yesterday. I listen to that many radio shows on football i lose track (sad really).

Anyway Rohde said the club would be trading for tall key position players and that Grant would be in defence next year. Which is good news for those of you who have been calling for that but of a little concern to those of us who see no obvious replacement CHF on the current list. Not any I would rely on to do the job week in week out and I would be sure could produce in a final.

I hope that doesn't mean that we will still see the hand of Wallace in Rohde's coaching. We want to see some different approaches, not the same stuff recycled. Friendship is one thing, but this is Rohde's big chance to make a name for himself. I bet Terry wasn't calling up Alan Joyce every few days for advice.

Tough

I have no doubt Rhode will make tough decisions. He will be ruthless. When he first came to the doggies as player development coach he was indeed tough. Heard this from a trianer down at the club.
