i wonder if we will see our players drinking red bull on the bench like i've seen football (soccer) players do.. when i first saw it i was amazed, couldn't believe athletes would drink it. i think gatorade does the job here doesn't it.

Getting a little bit of sports nutrition on...

Red Bull (and many other soft drinks) are hypertonic and are therefore poor at rehydration. They can provide some carb replacement, but it typically takes a long time, due to the balance of the drink not being good for rapid absorption. Gatorade and Powerade are isotonic drinks, which are designed for rapid absorption, helping to hydrate you quickly, and restore body salts lost through sweat during high intensity activity.

I guess the difference between association football and aussie rules comes down to substitutes in soccer don't do much activity on the bench, and they may not even be called to play. Whereas our bench players are going to be just taking a short break from high intensity activity. I would expect they would need to be consuming around 1/2 a litre of isotonic sports drinks every quarter.
