Really need to get rid of the language of " overtaking" the rugby codes when it comes to nsw. That realistically will never happen. Crafting out a solid and sustainable niche should be more the goal.

In some ways such as north west and eastern sydney that niche is already there, but other parts of the state like south west and Western Sydney which are much more multicultural and alot of country parts of nsw apart from the riverina its a long slow grind by dedicated people to eek out some semblance of interest in the game. For instance there are some regional areas of nsw that have never produced an AFL player.

A large portion of GWS problems has been keeping players on the park.

They'll bounce back pretty quickly too. I don't see either of these teams having a period like North, Carlton etc with years in the bottom 4
Interstate teams don't tend to hang around the bottom 4 due to having strong home ground advantage. Also you didn't answer my question about whether or not GWS have an academy like Sydney.

Nah. The system is designed so Sydney stay strong. The academy will ensure they virtually never stay down for long.
So is that true for all clubs with academies or just the Swans?

Lol… we won a final just last year dopey.
These threads, and the brain dead nuffies that start them, are so tiresome.
Ask anyone who supports Port and they'll tell you Port never recovered from 119, despite Port playing in multiple prelims since then.

I know they do. Are you saying it's irrelevant? Do you honestly believe they will spend 5 or 6 years on the bottom of the ladder?

I don't know how you can conclude Sydney will be in the wilderness either. Nothing over the last 20 odd years has suggested they are in any trouble in the long term. They have missed finals about 2 times since 2002 irrc. It's wishful thinking to think the Swans will be down for long in modern AFL

imo giants will struggle more than swans because of player retention. GWS training facilities should be based in inner east/north sydney. This will be far more attractive than driving out to Homebush for training.

In saying this I am pretty certain these clubs will never bottom out for long due to academies.

Anyone got any ideas for producing mass talent from Sydney and getting better ratings?

Mass talent as in the amount of footballers the Victorian system produces? That will never happen probably.

Consistant effort in nurturing the grassroots through getting into schools may be of some benefit though. This was disrupted during the covid years. Now have the opportunity to rekindle this.

Time. Things have improved massively for afl in nsw since even 10 years ago. More and more kids are interested, more kids are playing, it’s getting more media attention… even nrl sports bars will now have 1 tv dedicated to afl. NRL will still be #1 here but every decade the gap is closing.

Grass roots are slowly building but the Western Sydney NRL GF is a blow to the AFL especially in western Sydney.

No matter how much money you put into the game out west of sydney it won't compete with the tribalism, history and passion of the rugby league teams out west.

And don't start me with the BS membership numbers for GWS with 30k. They average 6k to a home game at spotless stadium across 6 games. They must be including pets, players, staff, family members through association of the club to reach that number.
