Only middle class scum engage in the North and South arguments.

Subiaco is in the Golden Triangle, funny because Subiaco used to be a middle class suburb that hated those Claremont snobs. Now they Snob out together.

Equally the new Stadium is East of the City, and north of St Georges Terrace. In no dimension is it really south of the city. It's highly accessible from the South Eastern suburbs, so it will be located for a future Armadale based side.

Anyone along the southern corridor has the hardest time getting to the stadium via public transport. It's not bad for those in the North.

Well the river runs in a diagonal direction it makes the North v South talk a bit ambiguous.

I find it a bit funny that we're moving our stadium pretty much directly east and it crosses this line, but I guess central is always the best option.

and EH subi is still middle class (as much of the GT still is) the change in land value of the house you've been living in for 20+ years doesn't change that.

James Packer should pay for (some of) it, apparently.

Mark McGowan via news.com.au said:
Asked today whether the State Government made a mistake in not requesting James Packer to offset some of the cost of the stadium, Mr McGowan replied: “They did, they did. I think everyone would say that”.

“How can you build a stadium next to the casino at a cost of probably more than $1 billion to West Australian taxpayers and not ask the biggest beneficiary of that building project for a contribution?” he said.

“I think it is laughable, it’s a laughing stock that he [Colin Barnett] didn’t actually ask for that contribution.

“The casino is great international tourist venue for Western Australia, I support the role it plays in that regard, but I do think that if they are going to receive millions of dollars from a State Government investment they should at least put their hands in their pocket.”

What private enterprise is going to kick in to a government owned and operated project?

Sure, Packer will benefit from the stadium being in Burswood and the government could conceivably negotiate any number of things with him, but the notion that 'we're putting the stadium next to you so how about giving us some money' is embarassing.

So where do you think governments get their cash from?

Check our every major hospital being build recently, etc, etc

It is my understanding that Packer did offer to contribute 400 million a few years back when they looked at both the footy and rugby stadium next to each other at Burswood. He was apparently turned down?? However we have no idea what he wanted for that gesture.

You can be assured that if Packer had committed money to the project, that the labor party would be calling for the corruption commission to hold an enquiry as to what promises were made in securing the money.

They'd be claiming "shady backroom deals" etc etc

Whilst the money would be good for the taxpayer, not having to compromise what is important and the integrity (both real and perceived) of the stadium is also

I don't see the Subi business council being asked to fork out money when the subi oval redevelopment was given the go ahead. Do we not think subiaco business' have profited from the football as well?

]Leedervilles actually packed Sunday through to Thursday now until 10pm[/B] which isnt bad compared to what it was a few years ago. Wouldnt have been more than a handful of poeple there at that time

exhibit a : lygon street melbourne

cafes open till 2am

full till then.

perth dies after 9pm.

population difference? I know where not close to being as vibrant as Melbourne yet but we are working towards it. Would have been lucky to see anyone out in Leederville past 7pm a few years ago.

Rooftop cinema in South Perth with a small bar serving food overlooking the river and city is all we need :)

That is a great theory FS.
However, when I was in Melbourne last year, I went to a game at the MCG and because I had things to do in the evening and the game was not too interesting, I left at three quarter time. I was astounded to see the hordes of people also leaving at the time. Even the supporters of the winning team. Then I realised it was because if you want to catch the train without being crammed in like a sardine - after having already let trains go which were full - then you have to leave well before the game finishes.
I have never left an Eagles game before the end but can see that having to become the norm if the majority of the patrons at the game have to use public transport. I must say I'm not looking forward to it - I would much prefer things to remain the way they are, but I guess that's progress.:(
well thats the definition of fairweather suppporters. Leaving the game at 3/4 time so you have a little leg room on a train?

What a joke.

Barnett should hurry up and get the concrete poured cause' if he loses the next election McGowan is going re-route the stadium back to Subiaco.

We can only hope. ;)

If McGowan want's Packer to contribute towards a stadium that is over a km away from his complex and one that if built will only bring in low end punters that dont make him much money. Then should he contribute funds towards road upgrades between the airport and Burswood like the Great Eastern Highway upgrade and the Gateway WA project that will bring in more high end punters that actually make Packer money?

Packer should tip in 10 million a year i reckon.

For. naming rights.

Crown Stadium / Crown Colosseum

Packer will probably pay for the whole thing if they ask him, and he'll probably do a better job getting it done on time and budget...

He's not going to do it out of the goodness of his heart, though. He's a businessmen, and he will expect a return on any investment he makes. I doubt he'll have any interest in dealing with the government/WAFC if the insist on running the show...

Packer's business credentials are hardly noteworthy - he's taken some massive losses in the years post-daddy

His Vegas foray as an example has been disastrous.

The government's license of being able to smoke indoors in the high rollers room is a pretty good bargaining chip.

McGowan: Sir, I need $100mill to build this footy oval
Packer: No
McGowan: Do you want to tell your high rollers to smoke outside?
Packer: Ok, heres $200mill and keep the change.

I never suggested Packer was a brilliant businessman, but he's not stupid enough to invest into a project that will government owned and operated.

Does anyone really think the government is going to attempt to blackmail James Packer into giving them millions of dollars to put towards the stadium by threatening the smoking license for his high roller room? Really?

Some clowns on perthnow suggesting that the government should have considered remote locations such as Joondalup.
