The suggestion I brought up in another sub forum on bigfooty was choose the team that won the superbowl for your birth season.

Whilst I don't speak on behalf of everyone here. Deep down most of us have no actual affiliation to a team.

I thought this was a fair way instead of getting people to jump on the team who is currently riding a winning wave.

That said. I'm guessing there are folk here who have graced earth for longer than 46 superbowls. Thus with thier wisdom and wise age have a free crack to make an informed choice. All others go by birth year and that way you ride the highs and lows in a fair and equitable way :D

And according to that. I hve to be a giants fan. That said. I still have currently not picked anyone and just enjoy the sport.

the reason i chose the giants was that the first game i ever watched was the 2008 superbowl, i chose to support the underdog against the (as the commentators said) over confident and expected to win pats. the amazing finish sealed it for me. THIS WAS MY TEAM, luckily i didnt start watching a year earlier (colts) or a year later (steelers) because even if we had been bundled out by the 49ers and we havent (until recently anyways) done anything since that sb win, i wouldnt trade the giants for the world.

If i chose the superbowl birth year i would be a 49ers fan with them caning the broncos 55 to 10

Re: New to NFL - Recap since 2002

The Bills are the only team in the last 10 years not to make the playoffs? That's kind of sad but seemingly set to change this year.

From 1988 until 1999, Bills won six Division titles plus four wildcards in that 12 season span. The 2011 campaign showed alot of promise with a 5-2 start before dropping seven in a row. 3-4 in games decided by 7pts or less. Copped a few brutal hidings but had a shut-out result (23-0) vs Redskins @ Toronto.

One day we'll have playoffs consisting of the likes of...

AFC: Bills, Browns, Jaguars, Raiders, Chiefs, Bengals
NFC: Redskins, Lions, Buccaneers, Rams, Seahawks, Cardinals

But don't hold your breath.

The parity has never been so good in a ten year span. Wouldn't surprise to see such a turn-around GG but as always, the same teams that keep missing out on success have themselves to blame as closing out games is what really separates the 11-5 teams from the 5-11 teams on a yearly basis. The schedule usually comes out a week before the draft.

I do remember the Bills being a powerhouse in the early-mid 90's with the whole 4 Superbowl losses fiasco and then surprise surprise it all went to crap once they got rid of Flutie.

and your right, I recall saying after the Bills beat the Pats last year that they are going to be a contender this year, Week after that they lose to the Bungals and the wheels fell off the wagon so to speak.

I just found it odd that even the Browns and the Jaguars have at the very least have had wildcard births in the playoffs and the Bills have been shutout of the postseason for at least 10 years running.

A friend of mine from near Buffalo summed it up best when talking about Lee Evens but it really applies to the Bills as a whole - You can take Lee Evens out of Buffalo but you'll never take the Buffalo out of Lee Evens.

Hahah, very good. Looking forward to my first game as an official Jet tomorrow morning.

How HOW!?!? is it possible to be a celtics fan AND a Jets fan? DID YOU MISS THE MEMO? I unfortunately am bound by blood to support boston teams...and face mercy killings if i ever say something good about a team from new york...especially the jets. LOL

Profound statement.. I'm so impressed by their draft/ off-season moves that I'm gonna slap a tenner on them in 2012. 81-1 shot. Smokey special. Last year I had the Niners as my best smokey... they hosted the NFC CC. Just sayin'.

Of the teams that have made the playoffs at least seven times in the last ten years;

New England
Pittsburgh
Indy
Philly
Green Bay

One is not like the others :p

3 playoffs in ten years for Dallas. Only 2 division titles. We were crap at the start of the decade mind you, still it's a sad stat to see.

I think you're alluding to Philly - Hasn't won the superbowl
But the most obvious to me was actually Green Bay - Only member owned team of the lot.

Stability with HC - Both teams have retained same HC

New England since 2000 B.Belichick (155-59)
Philadelphia since 1999 A.Reid (136-90-1)

Worst:
Oakland Raiders Seven Head Coaches since 1999. (90-125)

Eagles fans don't deserve a championship! Philly fans are the nastiest in American sport - They have cheered when opponents have been seriously injured & lying on stretchers. Inside their old stadium, there was a courtroom, judge, & gaol staffed during football games. In 1949, Philly baseball fans threw glass bottles onto the field & injured 2 umpires. Supposedly, they set a Redskins mascot on fire and then cheered as they watched him go up in flames! The Flyers' fans have fought with opposing players during a hockey game - perhaps they are just stupid because a hockey player decked out in all his gear is not a good target to fight. Their baseball fans hurl batteries at opponents. They've booed Santa Claus at football & basketball games. Their quarterback is a convicted dog killer.

They are easily far worse than the Magpie fans were in the old days at Victoria park!

Fitzpatrick hasn't proven he has the mettle to maintain a high level of Quarterback play for an entire season. That said, I like the acquisitions on defense (even if they did grossly overpay for Mark Anderson) and as always, the Bills will go as far as Fred Jackson takes them. CJ Spiller developing in the second half of 2011 can only bode well for their collective rushing.

The most intimidating sporting experience I've ever had was watching the Pats play at Philly and all I had on was a Pats snap back hat! No over the top cheering, no provocation. I was just going to the bathroom and I had people follow me telling me they were going to kill me. Lucky for me a guy with his kid came to my aid (they were Philly fans) telling the blokes following me I was just a tourist.

I tip my hat off/ admire you that you dared take on that trip on the road.. with your 'loyalty' on show as well!!
Even if it was a inter-conference match up, I wouldn't be interested in taking a chance 'ALONE' coz it only takes a 'sick f***' to ruin your health. Screw that.
Bar atmosphere ROCKS anyway!! or next best thing.. watching Chism sweat bullets!! :D LMAO!!

I'm not particularly new to the NFL and I was hesitant to make a new thread for it, but if there is anyone who hasn't tried NFL fantasy before or wants to dick around in a bit of a rookie league, I've got a bog standard one up on the NFL website. All the leagues put up so far seem like specialist, not particularly newbie friendly styles so I thought this might be a good introduction for people who want to test the waters so to speak.

Ok i've been watching alot of First Take and at the moment all they talk about is the NFL as it starts soon so i figured i'd start following a team.

Any suggestions? I go for the Heat but i hear the Dolphins are pretty crap :p And i'm ruling out the Jets cause i'm sick of hearing about Tim Tebow.

Here's a couple of old but perhaps useful threads...

Similar AFL/NFL Clubs
Similar NRL/NFL Clubs

As always, it's best to watch games and just gradually a team will pick you! Also, read up on various teams on wikipedia, good to get a grasp of what kind of history/background/type each team is.

Well there goes the bandwagoner joke :(

If you're looking for a team with a young superstar and a cool veteran (like the Heat had back then IIRC), I'd suggest Carolina. They've got the likely next superstar QB, a good running game, a Top-10 WR and a pretty good D (if they stay healthy) and could well contend for a SB in the next few years.

But ultimately, GG's suggestion to just watch some games with different teams playing and see what team attracts you is the best advice
