So we're not only training coaches for other clubs, now we're also a proving ground for AFL management.
And dont they need it!!!!

Man thats a life changing experience. Would have been absolutely devastating...and frightening.
Are you mostly back on your feet...cause Yasi was a little while ago now? I imagine it would take some time after losing everything....and some things would be irreplaceable.
I have been through 2 cyclones and have no desire to ever experience a 3rd so I moved waaay south.

Don't mean to derail the thread, but we're getting there, still living hand to mouth a bit. Nothing was insured except the car (was an ed qld house) so we had to pay for everything on credit card. washing machine, dryer, fridge, computers, tele, clothes, furniture. We got less for the car than it cost to replace it, so also still paying that off. But the made me regret the switch to teaching as we have three kids and a single income.

That's a hard hole to get out of mate, I wouldn't be paying memberships either, gotta look after the family first.

Head to the HFC facebook page now to ask Richard a question. There aren't many questions so you've got a very good chance of having it answered!

Thats a pretty big setback to overcome.....I wish you and your family all the best.

That's the implication I got from the article.

I wonder if the other 17 Commissions have thoughts on whether Newbold gets parachuted in to the Chairman job...

My favourite bit of the article was where it mentioned Fitzpatrick's natural replacement - who is someone I have never even heard of. I wonder if that is a good thing.

If Newbold and Evans are both there we may eventually end up with a well run competition
Yes and there's even more good news.
The Age article Feb 3 "Newbold to join AFL Commission" finishes with "Retired Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes has been touted as a future commissioner but it is considered premature for him to join the commission now".
What a shame!

What does an AFL commissioner do?
Well the very first thing they do is make sure that they have no conflicts of interest, like owning shares in and/or being a director of companies that have a major share in stadiums such as ANZ, as just one tiny example.

The second thing they do is remain humble, and realize they are the care takers of the peoples game.

The third thing they do is to make sure they receive no corporate kick backs, by being completely independent.

The fourth thing they do is make sure the Grand Final is the for the supporters of the two teams playing, not those corporates I mentioned earlier who receive no kick backs in return for their kick backs, no kick backing.

The fifth thing they do is keep their salaries in-line with inflation, not above and beyond, just ask Andrew.

Those are the five pillars an afl commissioner must abide by.

These great men also keep the game affordable, from memberships to merchandise to game day and finals tickets, for every Aussie.

Why on earth would you give up a job being President of an incredibly successful club only to become a faceless name at a God-awful institution?

I assume it can only be to remove Fitzpatrick as Chairman and actually fix the rot?
Yeah I know which way I would go on this one....wouldn't even need to think about it!

Newbold at AFL = Ross Oakley at AFL. We don't need them knowing why we're succesful. Big noting in the first degree.

Must admit im seeing paralells. Lets hope the dingley move isnt gold taps in the bathrooms so to speak

Hawthorn couldnt be stupid enough to relive history, could they?

Ross Oakley was never a Hawthorn man though. He was parachuted onto the 80s board due to his 'business acumen'

As a matter of fact (unfair or otherwise) Oakley's relationship is similar to Garvey

In the job less than a week and someone is comparing him to Oakley - ouch! (Joking of course - I get the point you were making).
