Newman axed amongst other list changes

Yeah thought this was weird too. What Kane Lucas provides over Newman I struggle to see.

Hope Newman gets picked up somewhere else and forges a career. Even if it is in the purple.

Lucas was chopping it up late in the year in the WAFL whereas Newman's performances were pretty hit and miss... If the eagles viewed Newman as a midfielder and not as a small forward (which he didnt play much of) then I can understand why he got cut. Lucas aint no world beater but a fair bit more consistent

It doesn't say we are anywhere. On the Eagles site it says we will rookie Colledge and Waterman providing they are still available. All it says about Newman is he was delisted and Vozzo saying thankyou for their contribution.

Chopping it up is relative, Newman regardless is still much closer to being an AFL applicable talent than Lucas and Colledge.

Delisting Waterman aswell is bizarre. The only acceptable explanation for this would be that his illness is career threatening.

Waterman is no talent, I don't understand the interest on this board for him. Colledge is a list clogger and I'd rather keep Lucas on the list anyway, don't see either of them ever getting a regular game though.

Newman is obviously short of character and probably talent as well, was picked too high in the end.

Tunbridge just hasn't shown anything.....and we don't have a need for him. Maybe somebody else will pick him up.

McGinnity can play a role and gets the most out of whatever talent he has. While surprising, I like the changes... no point clogging up our list with spuds. And someone sharking Waterman? Give me a spell. If another AFL club picks him up i'll do something drastic.

What makes you think Newman was much closer to being AFL applicable talent? From what I've seen he's in and out of WAFL games up forward and not much better in the middle. He does chime in with the odd very good game but to avg it out over a season I'd give Lucas the nod over him. Of course this all just my opinion, just surprised there is so much love for him given his body of work.

Think Simmo is pretty keen on guys performing to stay on the list, we've had over the last few years some ordinary players turning out for EP (and whoever they played for before that alliance) and playing like poo. Our bottom end sucked, if not blew.

I took his comment as they will only look to re-rookie both Newman and Tunners if nothing else is available in the rookie draft, i.e - if there are particular players still available that are on our radar, we will pick them over Newman and Tunners.

I agree. Lucas gets a lot of flack but he is purely injury depth similar to Giles. He does reasonably well at wafl level, is mature and has 40 games of AFL experience.

Lucas can find the ball but his ball use is average, he's small, he's one dimensional and he just doesn't hurt teams. Newman struggled with consistency with his production this year but some of that can be attributed to being injured for half the year and missing most of the last two years. What he does have is speed and skill, he's good overhead, has clean hands and good goal sense. Give me 15 Newman touches a game over 35 Lucas or Colledge touches.

Look I'm not saying Newman was a monty to make it, far from it, but I am always in favour of retaining those who have a reasonable chance of making it over limited guys with very little chance of making it. Seriously I think Mags, Waterman and Newman should all have been retained over Colledge, McGinnity and Lucas.

Yeah I think you are probably right. But I am still hoping for some secret scheme that's also going on.

I've never seen McGinnity or Lucas do anything to indicate they are even likely to impact an AFL game to any great extent.

McGinnity is at least AFL standard (and at least can play a role, albeit mediocrely) and assume (at a reach) Lucas would be too if required. Newman has done SFA in his time with us and likewise Colledge. Waterman stiff but I can see what they are doing. The guys that were delisted added no further value to us as a force.. we are in a window, we don't need list cloggers. Harsh, but true.

Half the time he has been with us he has either been in jail or been involved in court proceedings. His priorities this year should have been to get his life together first, then football second.

If the club looks back at the draft and thinks picking him up was a mistake, then fine, delist him. But to do so based on his performance this season is crazy.
