Next big rivalry in footy

One that is a few years away from bubbling up is North and Essendon. North have put together a pretty potent list, and both sides will be ready to peak together in a few years. Already plenty of history between them too.
Just a pity these games are played at Marvel. Back in the late 1990’s these two contenders were drawing between 50-70,000 to grudge matches at the MCG. Maybe by 2025 Essendon will be playing an extra game or two at the MCG, that’s the expectation.

I look forward to a heated rivalry with whatever club North ends up becoming

Melbourne V North Melbourne.

The best midfield in the AFL against the best developing midfield, and both have had some success trading with each other over the past few years.

If the Lions can maintain a healthy list and get a win over Melbourne a nice rivalry could develop.

Lions and Tigers had a heated rivalry going but looks like they might drop out of serious contention next year

Lions and Dogs - not much love lost there, potential for a few heated clashes in the next few years

Melbourne vs Dogs the logical choice if they meet in a final next year.

Sydney vs Essendon is another one mainly because it's always close and very infuriatingly controversial.

Generally speaking though most of those controversial decisions or moments go the Swans way so I would not quite say it is a rivalry the Swans fans feel. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't like playing Essendon as the games are always far closer than I would like but I don't feel any particular rivalry with Essendon.

Conversely even though it happened over 15 years ago now a part of me still wants to smash West Coast every time we play them.

Which is why I didn't say it was a rivalry. Given we're both in similar parts of the ladder, I could see it become a rivalry if we meet in finals over the next few years.

Melbourne v Dogs is simmering along nicely - a close game with some niggle and controversy on Wednesday night will help cement it.

Carlton and Essendon will be looking to take similar steps over the next few seasons so I think that could be a good one if there's a final or two in there.

If Carlton can push on and develop as expected/hoped, I can see us getting into real fierce on field rivalry with the Dees again.

We (players at least) Really don't like Viney and Oliver etc.
Yet last off season Carlton supporters were claiming that Oliver was theirs :rolleyes::rolleyes:

The second chapter will be written tomorrow night.
Long may it continue.

Aside from the derbies, the Dogs/Giants and Cats/Hawks are really the only ones I recognise as truely alive in modern footy. Geelong vs Freo was fun for a little while but hasn't felt relevant since Hayden Ballentyne retired.

Geelong vs Richmond has a lot going for it also.

The classics still exist (Pies/Blues etc) however as a neutral I personally don't feel the heat anymore.

Dogs seem to have a couple bubbling away nicely
GWS one is fever pitch
Dees one is boiling up nicely.
Swans one is a bit of a sleeping dog at the moment. The two in a cutthroat final....maybe just dispense with the umps that day.

Dons arent enough of a threat to build any new ones yet. The carlton rivalry should pick up given both are competing in the same part of the ladder. Afl really needs to start scheduling 2 games a year here.
