Next year...who are you hoping will step up to take us to the next level

Butcher - would be the main one. Keep saying he needs an interrupted pre season under Burgess. It's that time now. Can't really defend him if he doesn't show something next year.

Redden- If we can somehow get Lobbe/Redden working in tandem, and both being able to go forward and kick a goal or two (being a target for the small forward to crumb off at least), it will be massive for us.

Also keen to see how Shaw develops as well. Hopefully at least making a case for a debut in the second half of next year.

Keen to see Gray in the new year too.

Best bit about this year is where we are young enough you hope that Trengove, O'Shea, Wines, Moore, Young, Hombsch, Neade, Hartlett Colquhoun all have natural development left in them. Butcher, Pittard, Newton, Hitchcock, Ah Chee, Gray could actually have pre-seasons and really take more than one step forward in development.

the more important question though is picking who and how we will go backwards, if you can restrict some of Wingard, Cassisi, Cornes, Schulz, Monfries from going backwards too far than we can take that next step, which is consistent football throughout the season. you can see with many teams, players improving doesn't count for much if others go backward because every year, every team improves. with the crows this year losing Walker and Tippet, and effectively Jacobs, Reilly, Thompson, Vince who played well below their standards it doesn't take much. for me next year is all about depth and consistency, we know what the 22 players standards are now. as long as we can sustain it and perhaps fight through a few more injury problems because law of averages says they will come i will be happy, because that is the next step.

Yes, maybe so, but I'd much rather keep Tom than trade him for a third rounder which is the best we could get.

for just a third rounder, absolutely agree. keep Tommy ! for a third rounder that's part of another strategic trade, be it Polec, or an as yet unidentified (to us on BF!) player from elsewhere that meets a need, and if it gets Tom footy week in week out... open to ideas. not yet cynical enough to believe the win-win trade is dead !

If I was being honest I'd say every single player on our list (bar anyone that we delist/trade/lose to free agency of course), however in reality these are probably the players that I'm most hoping step up next year:

Boak:
Better consistency and slightly higher disposal efficiency. That's what I want out of Boaky next year.

Hartlett:
I think everyone that half seriously follows the AFL knows just how damaging Hammer can be. Although we have seen patches of great football from him in previous seasons, these patches have lasted longer this year. The great thing about Hamish's year this year is that he's stayed soft-tissue injury free and at the moment you'd think that this holds him in good stead for the preseason and furthermore, next season. The big thing we need from Hamish is consistency (throughout the season, and in each individual game), and I'm genuinely expecting him to take it up a notch or two next year.

Gray:
Consistency.

John Butcher:
I fear that if Butch doesn't show what he's got next year, it'll be his last year on our list. We all know that he has an atrocious kick and this must to drag his confidence down. With a good, uninterrupted preseason I will certainly have expectations. Do or die stuff from Butcher next year.

Lobbe:
More hitouts to advantage and a full year of brilliance please!

Moore:
He's probably in third-gear at the moment, would love for him to go up one (or two ;)).

Pittard:
Get him onto the wing or maybe a high half-forward role. I'm not really a fan of his defensive work, but he has pace to burn and a penetrating kick on him. Clearly has a way to go yet, but he has the potential to be an A-grader (IMO).

Redden:
If Redden stays on the park next year and shows that he can be damaging as a full-forward as well as in the ruck, thus allowing for a ****ing amazing ruck tandem, I may well have a permanent immediate throughout the 2014 season.

Newton:
Similar to Butcher, if Newts doesn't play at least half a dozen AFL games next year I'd think he'd be deadwood. I probably hold more hope for Newton to step it up next year than Butcher, but hey,

Westhoff:
Consistency.

Young:
Would love for him to cement a spot for himself in our best 22, almost certainly capable of doing so.

The obvious one is Butcher.

I thought Carlile and Trengrove were ordinary defensively all year but both of their performances in this finals series was outstanding (Trengrove had a few outstanding patches like in the showdown).

I'm expecting them to play like that on a weekly basis next year. If we have two reliable key position backs, it will go a long way towards us climbing up the ladder.

Yeah, Butcher is the big one for 2014.

A solid pre-season and hopefully at least 16 games. I'm not expecting him to breakout, just want him build his AFL experience, gain confidence and hopefully get some consistency with his performances.

Will be good to see Newton, Ah Chee, Clurey and Shaw debut in 2014.

Defence is a unit, the more they play together the better they will become.

Trengove will be a household AFL name come end of 2014, he will be a MONSTER. Jonas and O'Shea will be tracking close behind hind him.

Lobbe and Trengove.

Defence:
Carlile/Trengove/Broadbent/P. Stewart - ceiling

O'Shea - had a fantastic year this year. Great engine, great reading of the play/intercept marking; can still improve disposal/decision making. Showed that he is prepared to put in the hard work = 2013 season. Potentially could reach another level 2014.
Jonas - ? tapered towards end of year following rough conduct suspension and ? fracturing Hombsch cheekbone; to be given free reign to be as physical as he wants to be (but not at training :p ) to maintain early->mid year consistency for next year
Pittard - improving actual man on man defence, improving decision making
Hombsch - potential 3rd tall, already showed alot this year
Logan - ceiling
Colquhoun - not sure
Periphery
Heath - settle him down in a position
Stevenson - improve one on one defence
Clurey -

Midfield
Boak/Kornes/Cassisi/Brabert - ceiling

Wines - greater fitness, to spend preseason watching tapes of Joel Selwood in congestion re freeing hands for easier give (and yes for potential frees too)
Hartlett - greater fitness, injury free preseason and year thankyou
Moore - big body in mid, not an accumulator; used both as extractor and sometime run with player; ? ceiling in mid; might benefit from switch with A. Young to the HFF - as Young potentially has more tricks as an inside mid
Young - work on size/endurance; would benefit from more games/TOG; good hip strength, good side step, instincts first hands on ball

Periphery
Kane Mitchell - ? ceiling

Forward:
Schulz/Monfries/Westoff/? Neade - ceiling

Wingard - is there another level?
Gray - 24 months now post ACL; uninterrupted preseason; ? potential improvement. Orthopedic studies suggest otherwise
Redden - potentially could give us a Lade type forward/ruck, would help Lobbe
Butcher - uninterrupted preseason, stack on weight/lower body strength, work on goal kicking

Periphery
M. Shaw - weights ++

I'm not sure how I can prove it but I reckon O'Shea improved 300% over his 2012 efforts. If he improves another 300% then he is going to win the brownlow.

Oshea wasn't considered best 22 to start the year and got a gig in round 1 when bobby went out and he cemented it and never looked back

Similarly aged players like Moore & pittard also cemented their spots this year which weren't always a lock at the start of the season

I think we need to see 1-3 from the next group of draftees behind these guys to do what those others did this year. Players like blee, newton, ahchee, young and hitchcock - 2 of those to become worthy of a regular 22 would be great. Young really showed at the end of the season that he could be 1, I don't have a heap of hope for the rest though and really want to be proven wrong just like oshea did to me this season

Butcher to make a contest of everything coming his way and kick 25 goals
Neade to come back in and sit at Butchers feet
Moore to become a crowley with a little more attack and discipline
Gray to continue to improve his speed and agility lost from the injury
Hartlett to become what he has the capabilities to be (a buckley)
Pittard will be a big improver and possibly move to the wing
Big Red to return after a lay off to help out in the ruck and up forward
AhChee to become the name on everyone's lips

Not really an expectation but I can't wait for Redden & Lobbe to start their ruck/forward duo roles. The potential excites me.

IF and its a bloody big IF

Redden could develop a tank like Lobbe and
Lobbe could mark and kick for goal like Redden

then we would have the best ruck combination in the league, play two ruckmen and we would play at least 3 big blokes in our forward line every week.

I consider these men starters for PAFC - the positions aren't too important I'm just getting them down.

F: WINGARD - WESTHOFF - _________
HF: GRAY - SCHULZ - MONFRIES
C: EBERT - WINES - CORNES
R: LOBBE - BOAK - HARTLETT
HB: JONAS - TRENGOVE - BROADBENT
B: O'SHEA - CARLILE - __________

IN: CASSISI - MOORE - PITTARD - COLQUHOUN

I'd love to fill those two remaining holes (sounds dirty) with Hombsch and Redden - Hombsch releases big Jacko when we need another big leading influence around the ground and Redden is another big man that helps Lobbe and Schulz and therefore the whole team.

After those two big men I think I can round down our 'must improve' list to a few - I don't mean in a 'perform or delist' way but for the good of our team.

John Butcher
Paul Stewart
Aaron Young
Andrew Moore
Kane Mitchell

Campbell Heath

We get these guys cementing a spot in our side and we're laughing. But everyone already listed has to keep their spot and improve, obviously!

Newton, Blee, Neade stepping up and giving us something consistently would be great but I'm not expecting it on the same level as the guys above.
