Jaeger was the sports doctor who set the missus up for a double ankle reco with Dr. Hutchenson who was the gentleman who did the reco's for all the footy players. Whole thing was really well handled and they nailed everything they needed to.

There should be an Australia wide, even international search for the best medical person(s), with a sports industry back ground and will work closely with the high performance team.

AFL isn't big enough for clubs to employ doctors full time, given the soft cap footy ops expenditure restrictions, but we should be looking for someone better.

I'd like us to pinch an Australian Olympic doctor, but most of them live outside SA and it would be hard to get them here.

That's why the long term plans of building a sports science / health practice business that is owned by the club - maybe in partnership - but has its own independent income streams becomes an important factor in getting the best person/people and dodging the soft cap restrictions. These are a couple of Olympic doctors I know of and the type we should be chasing.

Dr Brian Sando was Norwood's doctor for years and was an Olympic team doctor at 6 games between 1980 and 2000 and in 2004 the Oz swimming team asked him to be their doctor for the 2004 games. The crows snapped him up in 1990 when they were formed, and he played a key role in their 1997-98 flags.

Dr Brian Corrigan in Sydney was the Australian Olympic doctor for games between 1968 and 1988. I knew of him before I moved to Sydney, but would regularly hear his interviews on radio in Sydney when I lived there. He was the Socceroos doctor for about 30 years, worked with Manly rugby league side and the Oz cricket team. Kerry Packer pinched him to be the doctor during World Series Cricket.

Both Dr Brians have been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Port's former doctor, Peter Barnes went to the Olympics with the Oz cycling team 2 or 3 times, when he was Port's chief medical officer.

This story from the AOC 2 years ago gives you an idea of what type of experience you have to have to get the top job with the Australian Olympic Committee.

The AOC has announced a key appointment for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games campaign with Dr Carolyn Broderick confirmed as the first female Medical Director for an Australian Olympic Team.

Dr Broderick is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at UNSW, Sydney and Staff Specialist in Sport and Exercise Medicine at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead.

Significantly, Dr Broderick is the Chief Medical Officer of Tennis Australia and has served in a range of senior medical positions including Deputy Medical Director for the Australian Olympic Team in Rio 2016, a member of the AOC Medical Commission (2013-2016), a member of the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee and the Medical Advisory Panel for the National Rugby League.

Her Olympic experience further extends to Team Physician for the Australian Team at the London 2012 and Sydney 2000 Games and Medical Director the Australian Youth Olympic Team in China in 2014.

AOC President Ian Chesterman says the Team Medical Director role is critical for the success of the Australian Team in Paris with Dr Broderick an outstanding candidate in a very strong field.

“We are very grateful to have this kind of expertise and experience available to us. Dr Broderick is exceptionally well qualified and understands the Olympic high-performance environment.

.......

Dr Broderick has also been Team physician for the Australian Women’s Basketball Team (Opals) and Easts Rugby Club in Sydney. She succeeds Dr David Hughes following his eight years in the role. Dr Hughes chaired the panel which undertook the selection process for his replacement.

The appointment was ratified at today’s meeting of the AOC Executive in Brisbane, which also appointed Dr Anik Shawdon to the AOC Medical Commission.....

This Linkedin page gives you an idea of the quality of Dr David Hughes who was head doctor until 2022. If you want to be the best, you have to get the best people.
