How crap is the AFL scheduling Pies vs Geelong at 4.35.

We need a rule like the USA

“Under the Sports Antitrust Broadcast Act of 1961, the NFL is prohibited from playing Friday night games during the high school football season and Saturday afternoon games during the college football season.”

I wish the AFL did something similar

Sports are very different in the USA. They dont have the local leagues like we do here. It goes from college sport to professional. And they play mid week sports.

If the AFL didnt play on Saturday or Sunday (when school footy, junior footy and local footy is played) you would kill the sport.

Not sure what sort of rule you would like?

That it cannot be screened live on Saturday afternoons when there are grassroots finals on (especially Grand Finals). They can show it as a delayed telecast instead.

They used to have to compensate leagues whenever a broadcast clashed with their Grand Finals.

Then the AFL took over the management of grassroots football, ended things like that from happening and they have have done their best to harm the grassroots game ever since.

To the AFL, every person who pays their $5, $10 or whatever to go into a local game each week is a missed opportunity to make money. They would rather that person pay $30+ for a ticket to an AFL game and buy merchandise, food and drink, etc. while they are there.

Its 1 game throughout a whole finals series. Not a big deal is it?

Not really a big issue is it?
They will get 90,000 at the MCG next Saturday.

When would you like the game to be played? They can't play a double header saturday night becaue they all have to have there own air time and can't play sunday. So when?

It’s actually a massive deal.

The pies vs gws final a few years back cost the league an absolute fortune. The attendance at Preston city oval was thousands off what was expected… times by $15 a head that’s a massive loss.

... and the difference between club affiliation fees being the same or a few grand more the next season.

Did not cost them thousands of people and it doesn't effect the fees. Your talking garbage. There's been a Saturday afternoon game in the AFL finals, during NFNL leagues finals since the 2000s if not back into 90s.
Your making a mountain out of molehill.

Give us a solution? If they can't play Saturday afternoon, then when? Becaue it can't be saturday night.

I’m speaking garbage.. It’s not rocket science overlapping a Collingwood final during the NFNL finals series doesn’t do great things for attendance.

Alternative?

Swap Brisbane vs Richmond interstate game to Saturday 4.35 and have Pies Thursday?

Pies Geelong start at 5.35 into 9 o’clock start for Freo game?

Heaps of other ways to do it.

Think you will find the weather played a big part that day. A few years prior before no issue at all when 95K+ attended the MCG for Tigers v GWS final while there was no room to stand at PCO for the Macleod v Bundoora GF.

That where the WA Footy Commission were smart.

They made a deal with the AFL that no AFL matches were to be played in Perth on Saturday afternoons at the same time that either WAFL or Perth FL finals matches are being played.

If the AFL do schedule any Saturday matches, they need to be 6.10 or 6.40 starts (like it is next week) which means that people are able to go to both.

Being Preliminary Final week in the PFL on that Saturday means both the PFL and AFL are able to share a win-win outcome.

Then again the AFL and AFL Victoria are one and the same and therein lies the problem.

Does he have priors? not sure if this impacts these decisions anyway.

Such a big loss to Monty, who seem to have lost a touch of form lately.

Did you think this through?
So all your worried about is Collingwood?

You realise local football is played all around the country? So if you swap the Brisbane game to saturday. Is that just too bad for there local leagues up there?

And 9pm the Fremantle game? Are you kidding? You would lose half your audience. A hell of alot of people in Melbourne, Brisbane etc. Aren't going to watch Fremantle vs Bulldogs that late. Would be a disaster for TV ratings.

We can argue until the cows come home. My opinion stands there should be a AFL football black out until 6.30 on Saturdays to support grass roots football as seen in the USA with High School.

How the AFL schedules around that I don’t mind… I’m sure they’d figure it out. Monday night football is huge in the USA for example.
