Mega Thread Nick Daicos - Can he be the GOAT? Part 2

Knock yourself out. Forum is open for all negative and positive feedback.
I'm certainly not going to cry about any negative feedback on Cripps.
Unlike you guys I'm not going to waste my time on opposition players, especially when I know we'll never have to worry about them in finals.

Also was just making the point how ridiculous it is to criticise contested marking of Nick Daicos, making the comparison of bagging Cripps because of his Ruck work. It lowers credibility massively, make proper arguments like ball disposal.

He's still a young kid who hasn't perfected his game yet and has some flaws like every other player in history of our game but the things you Carlton fans run with is a fair bit ridiculous.

Avoiding contact at all costs and never attempting contested jumping marks is a big flaw. Let’s face facts and reality.

He’s good at running and being on the end of others hard work reciprocating handpasses and short passes ..but he’s not a superstar.

Just a good above ordinary player.

I admire is brother more.

At least he has some grunt in him.

It took Josh a few years to gain that grunt as he was critically undersized.

If Nick opens himself up in marking contests you can guarantee teams will run through him with intent. Personally I'm glad he's not that stupid and it will add to his longevity, stick with what your good at its a small price to pay especially considering the potential big price of him getting injuries.

In his first year he was to small and not harderned enough for the wing/mid. Second year he was in the middle on the outside with limited minutes on the inside. 3rd year he became a fully fledged mid. He's growing into the player he'll be while already reaching some great heights.

Avoiding contact at all costs is massive stretch, look at his contested ball numbers, you don't gain that by being mentally weak and being scared of contact.

“If Nick opens himself up in marking contests you can guarantee teams will run through him with intent.”

So you concede he’s absolutely null and void in the air.

I think of a player like Mark Mercuri who had similar speed and running capacity to Nicky but mercs was taking strong contested marks against taller opponents at aged 19.

And he was 5’10.

Starred in a premiership win at 19. Just an all round hard nut.

It sounds like you’re making excuses for Nicky’s lack of courage and toughness while avoiding taking hard marks.

And we all understand that..

Nick's "strategy" is to win premierships (probably a foreign concept to you now), not pretend his Barry Hall or Byron Pickett.

The hard truth is that intelligence recognises intelligence and...well... have a good day! 😃

Is this planning for the future. When he takes a contested mark, you'll point out that it wasn't a contested jumping mark.

One usually has to raise one’s feet off the ground somewhat in a contested mark.

I’m guessing you’ve never played footy yourself. Like 99% of Collingwood fans.

That makes no sense at all.

Lay off the mushy gummies.

Oh dear. A lot of contested marks don't involve jumping - always has been the case.

For some reason I actually don't have that one saved on my laptop at home, must be on my work computer so I'll check it tomorrow.

In the mean time heres some fantastic clips of Nicky in action. The GOATIE

Glorious and informative vision.

It’s like Nicky would rather lean in and cop it in the neck than try to break a tackle. He’s a high contact free kick actor.

Add the occasions where he steps away from ground balls and lets someone else take the hit and you’ve got yourself a genuine squib of biblical proportions.

What’s the point of joining in an obvious car crash when you can pick up the pieces and go kick a goal?

He generally goes in if it’s required.

Like any player, he has to make a call on what level to commit to hundreds of contests per game. He’s not immune from making a mistake.

It's basically his only real weakness at the moment I'll concede that.

Like every Collingwood supporter I'm happy to keep the Ferrari polished and out of the mud. There's not much good that can come from Nick recklessly throwing himself into those positions to appeal to some AFL supporters. If it was an issue the coaching staff would address it, I suspect they're closer alligned with my perspective.

Mark Mercuri was a star that had limited longevity albeit with a bad knee from memory. Maybe if he was smarter and had Nick's approach he would have had alot more time at the top of his game. We'll never know.

Firstly it's a bit weird you have Collingwood on your work computer. Probably have more Collingwood content than Carlton content altogether.

Most of those, Nick's doing literally nothing different from what Selwood made a career out of doing which plenty of players do. I've seen Lachie Neale do basically everything you just showed. One was smart play to get the First goal in a grand final and another he would have only ran into Darcy Cameron instead of doing any good 😂

This one close enough?

I just checkmated you and all you have is cool story bro?

Cool story bro. 😎
You check mated me ?
I've already said he's a great young player. You need to keep up.
Pointing out weaknesses and flaws in his current game is part of the process. Until those fundamental key areas are addressed, there is no such GOAT talk to be had.

That's right... That is one every five games and I've never seen him win a contested header..

Here are three goals he kicked from contested headers in his whole career of 800+ goals

Two of them are late in his career

You understand that Opta's defintion for an aerial dual won is:

This is where two players challenge in the air against each other. The player that wins the ball is deemed to have won the duel. When more than two players are involved the player closest to the duel winner is given an Aerial Duel lost.

It doesn't say anything about exact proximity. It's in terms of the space a player can realistically cover when jumping to head a ball. It's subjective and context based, different to contested marks in football:

When a player takes a mark under physical pressure of an opponent or in a pack.

The main factor would be if players are actively challenging each other for the ball, regardless of distance, (not necessarily physical pressure), which can be be between 0-3 metres.

The definition is more loose and befits a spoil in Aussie Rules. There are no spoils in soccer (unless it's a keeper or an illegal handball) but their are headers recorded. Aerial duels won, are usually spoils rather than contested headers.

It's neat you went to "Google" your stat, but you're not a soccer person and you may think you put egg on my face, but you just scrambled a whole plate on your face, including the rest of your breakfast.

Let me throw the coffee in your face as well...

Oliver (189cm) and Cripps (194cm) had 6 and 8 spoils for the whole season in 2024...

Neale had 3 spoils, the same as Daicos. Same as Prestia and all of them one more than Dusty.

🍳 🍳🍳☕☕🤡

You're the one who brought up headers/Messi in regards to contested marks, not me. And no shit I went to google, where else would I go to find stats.

An aerial duel in soccer absolutely does not equal a spoil in footy. Blocking the ball when an opponent kicks it would be more equivalent to a spoil.
