Coaches, who both rated him the best player on the ground, must have NFI....

Or.... maybe the Player Ratings algorithm is flawed.

Possibly, but just thought I would mention it.

I would be curious to see how Champion Data do their ratings but 14 clearances don't mean much unless we know the quality of those clearances.

For instance Daicos had 41 disposals, but despite those 41 disposals he only had 5 inside 50's, which is not a great rate of return.

Although one of those was the most important inside 50 on the day...

But again, it's impossible to judge a game from a stats sheet.

Would it have been better if instead of hitting up teammates who were 55 metres out from goal, or handballing to a teammate who was in a better position to make a better decision, he more regularly dumped it into the forward line to contests or opposition players in order to get his inside 50 numbers up?

The kid was best on ground, as judged by both coaches. Did he play the absolute perfect game? Probably not. But a player can't do much more than being better than the other 45 players who took to the field.

It is why I don't like raw numbers though as they don't actually tell you that much. The Crouch brothers got a lot of the ball for instance and stats wise they looked amazing, but they did nothing with it.

Not saying Daicos is like that, he isn't, but I do wish there was a better way to measure a players performance rather than the standard disposals, clearances, tackles as a bad clearance that immediately results in a teammate being tackled is measured the same as a clearance that involves running towards the 50 and kicking straight to a teammate 20 metres from goal right in front.

There is. It's called the Eye Test.

The eye test is not always the best metric either. In fact witness statements in car crashes are usually pretty unreliable. People's perceptions can't always be trusted.
I agree totally.
I actually used this argument when my ex-wifes friend, stated that she witnessed me at the pub with another woman :D

It's always going to be hard to create a comprehensive system for stats.

A kick from full back doesn't necessarly require much skill to hit a target but it's still meters gained so worth something.

A kick inside 50 with an uncontested mark imo is worth a lot more than most other kicks on the ground.

Kicks that go to contests really shouldn't have much weight

Carlton supporters now getting desperate, after making the most of GOATcos' 'slow' start to the season, where he was his team's best player in two of his team's three losses to start the season.

To be honest that is Heeney's problem right now as Warner, Gulden and a few others are playing really well and likely taking points off him.
Nah Heeney is in that kind of Ablett form where he can play with a handful of genuine midfield stars but still dominate coaches votes.

Ablett used to get stiffed in the Brownlow some nights (0 Brownlows from 2007/2008 was a joke...Bartel and Cooney had great seasons but clearly inferior to Ablett's) but dominant midfielders these days will get 30+ votes so I can see Heeney even entering record breaking territory. If he sustains this form, of course.

Do we have a contested mark yet - apologies if he’s been racking them up :)

Utter failure if he hasn't taken a contested mark. All those clearances mean nothing.

Just on Champion Data, they keep having the rewrite the algorithm because Collingwood breaks it.

I saw the clip of Hoynie with Kane Cornes and the uncomfortable look on both their faces when he trotted out that Daicos was number 21 in ratings but they never mentioned the other 20. He should name the better players, was it Harvey Harrison? De Goey? Mason Cox? Was it the entire Crows starting 18 plus IQ and Maynard?

I recall in the Carlton game Weitering was rated very lowly, because he only had 8 or 9 touches and a few spoils. The bloke was a very real presence, you could see the Pies mids changing direction to avoid him, and his bodying in the packs (vigorous but only borderline illegal, and well perpetrated) was a problem for us. I had him in Carlton's best as he materially affected the game but he was not rated.

Sometimes I feel like the maths boys get worked up over the numbers without really understanding the game. No expert myself but Daicos 21st vs the Crows? Not credible.

Nah I know but it's going to gain momentum.

He'll be accepting his third Norm (in a losing side, they're worth more) or his fourth brownlow (umpires pet) and it'll finally dawn on him he never took a contested mark, his smile will flicker and go out, and a small piece of joy will die in this world, never to rekindle.

You’re right…….it is pretty sad.

Maybe he could just …TAKE A BLOODY CONTESTED MARK!

And get a few hit outs while he’s at it.
