Horne Francis is the better athlete and better on the inside. It’ll be interesting to see who ends up the better player in 10 years.
What constitutes athleticism to you? I would think that endurance, agility and balance are all part of the equation - where Daicos has a significant advantage

'Athleticism' has been overrated recently, in my opinion. There is no substitute for growing up with a Sherrin in your hands. Couple that with a lifetime of mentoring from an absolute great and you have what we see in the Daicos boys, particularly Nick. I suspect that Nick would have, like most younger siblings, wanted to outshine his older brother, and in this case, he appears to be doing just that.

When i hear athleticism i think of Hampson and Stanley. Both below average footballers in their time but forever labelled " amazing athletically" by every commentator. Footy IQ outshines athleticism.

I havent seen much of JHF. But Nicks got a lot of attributes that aren't average in terms of his athletic ability,

Shaun Hampson and his near mythical speed. He did marry Megan Gale though, so maybe he won at the end of the day

From my pov 'athleticism' is an inept term for a footballer - generally speaking.

It refers to general physical characteristics which are important in a field of sporting endeavours dominated by individual contests.

Give me a player immersed in and adept in the intricate variations of team work any day of the week.

i've been brainwashed into this "doing his role" stuff. Some roles need players who can run fast or are strong tacklers. Some roles need good thinkers. Its all about specialisation so i'm told

I used to be offended by David Parkin's description of Peter Moore as a "super athlete who just loves playing footy." There's not much about Carlton that I can stomach but Parkin's views have always been worth listening to.
Now, almost 40 years on I think I know what he meant in as much as he believed Moore to be so gifted athletically that football was the beneficiary and while Parkin was a coach who always preferred Footballers over athletes (hence my indignation), he was acknowledging Moore as a genuine freak.

Understand your point CP, Moore was one of those rare gifted individuals who had it all.

Greening was another, as was Len Thompson.

Even fabulous Phil had it but sadly nothing between the ears.

Please accept our heartfelt apologies Pies. There was one stand-out player in last years draft and we didn't get him.

Don't you ever, ever, ever let that plastic franchise Port POWER wear their prison bar jumper !

Thank you and good night.

Must be such a bitter taste to have had a number 1 pick and hes gone within 12 months , not having a dig. Just seems such a let down by the club to have picked him

TBH I didn’t pay much attention to JHF, and what with injury and suspension he had a less than spectacular first season. And then there was the obvious unhappiness, which he didn’t pretend to hide. I’d say not the debut season he was expecting, and I have some sympathy for North.

But in young Nick, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smarter and more natural footballer at 19 and in his first year. His attributes more than compensate for any perceived lack of athleticism, speed, strength or any other common or garden attributes found in lots of AFL players.

As far as I’m aware there’s no lack of speed or athleticism, real or perceived. He’s quick off the mark, and commentators have been consistently raving about his ability to keep running and getting to contests, his tank is huge for a kid of his age.
The only question mark is strength, but that’s common for younger players and easy to fix over the course of a couple of preseasons. Just look at his brother, Nick will grow in to his body in the same way.

"Athleticism" isn't overrated, and Nick's ability to keep running hard for as long as he does is unusual for an athlete this young. He's blessed with a very zippy take-off as well.

High skill, elite physical attributes, & strong situational awareness are all present in the kid (and all elite level "play-makers").

Sorry yes athleticism is overrated because athleticism for for athletics - it's a combination of physical factors for athletics.

Athleticism has it's place in all sports but it's given far too much weight by people who don't understand football.
