Nick Maxwells Top 10 AFL Leaders over the past 25 Years

Shaw? Wynd? Harley? Id make this table based on qualities below.

1) Michael Voss
2) John Worsfold
3) James Hird
4) Brett Kirk
5) Mark Bickley
6) Stephen Kernahan
7) Paul Kelly
8) Wayne Carey
9) Ben Cousins
10) Michael Tuck

Characteristics taken into account for a great leader:
a) Tough - you walk taller in finals knowing hard bastards have your back and will put their body on the line.
b) On-field performance - leading by example and performing great consistently are a must.
c) Dedication - training hard, endless pursuit of success no matter what, getting 100% out of your potential.
d) Communication - need to be able to inspire teammates with your words in between quarters and at the start of a match, particularly during the regular season. Also helps to bond the team together.
e) Integrity - good values and ethics are necessary to have people follow you on the field. Lack of it means brilliant players like Carey, Cousins slip down the order.
f) Success - bit of a hindsight quality, but having consistent success in a great team requires a good leader

So, you just did what Maxwell did by showing your bias adding two Eagles in there...

But he's wrong and you're right?

Maxwell must feel so ashamed now...

Ben Cousins, what a role model! A man of integrity who had his teammates, family and himself fooled. Great player who lost all respect. And you call him 9th greatest leader / captain???

Harley was ten times a better captain than Cousins.

Yup, Tom Harley is second, and Mark Ricciuto isn't even there, what a ****head.
Not to mention that Hird is 5th? Should be second to Voss.

You guys realise he would've been asked to do this. He didn't just hold a press conference so he could announce his opinions..

Surprised he didn't squeeze his mate Hodgey in there.

Seems to have okay credentials to me...
Darn right. Maxwell certainly is not the best player in the Collingwood team but by God, he is the best captain in the competition. If you haven't read the two Collingwood books from 2009 & Grand Final Week 2010 you'll have no idea.

What utter crap people are saying about his opinion holding as much validity as anyone else posting in this forum. He is an AFL captain (a great one at that) so he'll have a great insight into what makes the best footy leaders, certainly far more then anyone on this board.
:thumbsu:
No Mark Bickley, 2 time premiership captain? Cmon!
Both 97 and 98 came from behind at half time to win back to back flags? That isn't good leadership? Give me a break!
Carey are you kidding, great player but on field captaincy might be great, but he was probably screwing your wife/partner while you were out somewhere!! Yeah great captain. (Dont get me wrong top 3 afl player ever imo)
I wouldn't expect Mark Bickley to be a great captain. Sure he was a fair leader but to be top 10 or even top 20 I wouldn't think so. Tbh it was a team effort in Adelaide in those years as far as leaders go. And Blighty.

Why does Maxwell cop such a hard time? Always noticed how much flack he gets from opposition supporters and plenty of Collingwood fans too. Just wanted to know why?

I think he's a good leader.

I like your username

And to answer your question, it's because a lot of people are just jealous halfwits.

"We may have lost the battle, but we haven't lost the war."

I'm guessing.

"We may have lost the battle, but we haven't lost the war."

I'm guessing.

I see, 'tis an interesting thing to say but in the grand scheme of things can understand why he'd say it. Obviously rated very highly as a leader by team mates and the rest of the AFL.

Anyway I think it's a good list, and he would've been asked to write it, no matter who he would have put in there people would have reacted like this because its Maxwell.

What has that got to do with his leadership? If you want leadership then look at Lenny Hayes.

He lead his side to the ultimate success in the game.

That's a pretty good thing to do. Something that Hayes hasn't done.

Maxwell is one of 10 guys to have captained his football club to a premiership, and that club happens to be the second-most successful one in the comp. His leadership is now etched into the annals of the game and his own club. As much as people may love Hayes, the same can't be said for him.

Baldock or GTFO when it comes to St Kilda.

Maxwell's ability to "shit" opposition posters is one of his greatest assets.
His ability to constantly defy the rubbish posted about him is his second greatest asset.
Providing the Leadership he does on field and off is his greatest asset.

Ever since the final siren in the 2010 first Grand Final, I've thought Nick Maxwell was a bit of a w**ker, this list confirms it!

fairly sure he's allowed to have an opinion.

It does say "Nick Maxwells Top 10 AFL Leaders..." after all. Not, "The Definitive Top 10 AFL Leaders..."

Yes, he is. Just like everybody else is allowed to think that his opinion is shit. :p
