Obviously Winmar is only bloke who know what that gesture really meant. Everything else is second hand. However it has been reported (and the story that has long done the rounds) the Nicky himself told people it was actually about showing heart and guts (at the time and since). It was reported that way at the time and both Don Scott and Mike Sheehan (hardly controversy seekers like Sam) recall it like that as well. It's hardly a crime for them to say that now and it certainly doesn't make racist - even in today's hysterical environment.

I would say that I used to go to Vic Park in those days and there is no question that racial abuse was very common. He would have copped some appalling comments that day, especially when playing so well.

My recollection is the tide only started to turn against actual racism in the AFL with the Long and Monkhurst incident a couple of years later.

The case won't be whether they're racist, it'll revolve around saying saying NW lied about his reasoning for financial gain

I'm not offended.

To be honest, as a 35yo straight white male who's had it pretty good - it would be somewhat patronising for me to be offended on behalf of our Indigenous people.

Where I do get offended however, is when people dismiss the offence taken by these minority groups. Dismissing how these guys do or don't feel is offensive to me, as a white guy.
