I should probably rephrase, doesn't do enough every week given his ability.

See, this sort of judgment against him I just don't understand. When healthy, I would put his output side by side against nearly every ruckman in the league, and certainly above what even the most hyped ruckmen for his age are expected to produce. In conjunction with that, he pulls out freakish moments that are somehow highlighted as his only game input by a select minority. The media may exacerbate this by focussing primarily on those highlights, but that isn't indicative of his overall input.

His freakish ability somehow overrides the fact that he's still a young lad growing into his own game. But he's held to a higher standard for some reason, and ends up suffering for it in the eyes of some supporters.

Was he beaten last night? Yes, comfortably. It happens to great ruckmen let alone still young ones.

At the end of the day, the media loves him because he's a highlight reel. That's all they DECIDE to focus on. Other fans for some reason take offence to that, and highlight their young rucks as not getting as much love, and thus Nat is apparently overrated. But media is all about creating the 'moment'. That's somehow evolved to 'Nic Nat disappears for 90% of the games', which is just flat out wrong.

Colour me confused...

Expected responses to this topic really.

Trying to be objective Nic Nat's output does not gel with the media attention and fan fapping this bloke gets. Sure he's a great marketing tool for the AFL and WCE at the moment because he is instantly recognisable after being rammed down peoples throats since he first stepped out in the blue and yellow (especially here in WA).

To me he seems like he is probably a genuinely nice bloke and obviously has some talent, he's not at the top end yet.
I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be an absolute superstar but he is a fair way away at the moment.

But hey feel free to discount my opinion just coz I am a Freo supporter. :D

I was surprised NicNat wasnt pinged for illegal holding around the ground at the stoppages. Almost at all throwins/ ball ups baring the centre bouncedowns Nicnat would wrap his left arm around his opponent which hinders them and also NicNat would also press his arm onto the opponents top of their shoulder which stops them jumping / rucking.
NicNat compalins about his treatment but he is just as bad.

Mu
Mundy doesn't get talked up as a freak of nature. Mundy doesn't get talked up as the best player in his position in the AFL. Mundy doesn't get threads about him every month talking about how awesome he is.

The only midfielder in the AFL who gets talked about like that is Ablett, and he does have the numbers to back up the praise.

NicNat's output doesn't match his praise, that's the only point I was making.
mundy doesn't have the news reporting what socks he wears or toothpaste he uses

Watching the Eagles v Bombers game

Not disputing the idea that he can be a fantastic player, but I am curious about the timing and this comment - Ryder handed him his arse last night.

he did a few things before I posted that made go..gee, something special devloping...then he stopped. I stand by it tho, at 23 his best years are well ahead of him and he is a little underdone. His tank is lacking at the moment, but that will change. Name me one player that can do some of the things he does, in a 202cm package, certainly not Tippet:p. Consistency will come with experience.

Ryder :D

It still completely baffles me how he was dropped earlier this season. (Un)luckily Essendon eventually came to their senses on that one. It has to be Bellchambers/Ryder as the ruck combo now, surely.

He wasn't dropped, he was suspended and when his suspension was up they didn't play him. Surprised me as well; particularly because he's the type of player that really needs to play himself into form.

Massive Bellchambers fan, but I think I'd rather have Daniher or Gumbleton in the side; both would have been exceptionally dangerous last night.

Probably should have re-phrased that, it baffles me that he wasn't immediately recalled once the suspension was up.

Daniher and Gumbleton are more bit-part and not specialised ruckmen though, and I think Bellchambers has shown a fair bit as a resting ruck. He was lousy last night but in my view he's certain first 22.

Yeah you're right.

I think like a lot of Essendon folk we saw Daniher do his thing and nearly lost our load; so anything keeping him out of the side is being closely scrutinised.

Mate, that is EXACTLY why he is overated... lol!!! So much attention for such an average but sometimes flashy player.

So he's overrated as a player by fans because the media decides to focus on his occasional freakish bursts?

Okay...

'freak of nature' is a bit of a stretch. just an unusually athletic tall / unusually tall athlete for an AFL player.
would be a relatively unremarkable athlete in the basketball world.
solid footballer though, and still improving.

Getting smashed by Ryder what game are you watching?
You just believe anything the commentators tell you? Seems every single time the Eagles play NicNat gets smashed by the opposition ruckmen. Yet the stats never ever back it up. At the very best Ryder broke even with him. People have just come to expect so much from Cox and Nicnat now that if they don't have a massive impact on the game they perceive it as them getting smahed by the opposing ruckmen.

He is sufferign from delayed groin surgery and bugger all pre-season conditioning. Was absolutely buggered by the end last night. Wont hit full stride again till next year. Still the number 1 rated ruckman in the game.
Mate in that case he was absolutely buggered by about 5 minutes into the second quarter.
hth

nic nat lead all ruckman in champion data rankings last year. so if he is flashy what the hell are other ruckman? him and cox are judged harsher than anyone because they have higher standards.
