Strange that Wisden, the bible of cricket, apparently needed Brendan McCullum to become a coach to discover the phenomenon known to the rest of us as late order hitting.

Also, to apply a little 'reverse' psychology to the argument that Australia played like England with victory close, it might be said that Bazball fell apart as defeat loomed, with Ben Stokes following Mike Brearley to line the boundary.

Fascinating.
It’s akin to sheedy discovering aboriginals

The Othe Robbo said:
Writing in his new column for Wisden.com, Robinson said he was surprised by Australia's unwillingness "to go toe-to-toe with us", adding that Brendon McCullum, England's head coach, had told the team in his post-match address that they had made all the running in the game and that "it feels like we've won, lads".

"He just said, "Lads, I'm immensely proud of the efforts that you've put in, we've made the game what it was," Robinson related. "We were so close to pulling off an unbelievable victory. We played all the cricket in the game. If it wasn't for us, the Australians wouldn't have even had a chance to win."

Summary: Getting close feels like they won. And Australia only won because of how England played. Which is a sign of success.

The Eagles might need a new media guy:
The Other Robbo would have said:
"I'm surprised the Crows were unwilling to play our style. We generated all the excitement in the game. If it wasn't for us, they wouldn't have scored anything like so many goals. When that opening siren went and scores were level we were so close to an unbelievable victory. Feels like a win."

Is it just me or does this have some serious primary school "Write an essay about what you did on your holidays" vibes about it?

We were surprised by how defensive Australia were and how unwilling they were to go toe-to-toe with us.

Clearly our man Ollie is blissfully unaware of the rope-a-dope concept. This should not be a surprise to anyone.

Hang on, if they supposedly had a hold on us from the first over of the match, supposedly played all the cricket in the match, supposedly made the game what it was, how could that be constituted an "unbelieveable victory" ?

You know what is an actually unbelieveable win? Away from home, supposedly behind all game, chasing 281 and numbers 9 and 10 put on 55 to snatch victory

"We've put the Aussies on the back foot" McCullum reckons....ah yes, the team that won the first test are definitely the ones on the back foot.

It's all too hilarious to even comprehend really. I think my favourite part is that Stuart Broad's all time Ashes highlight is Zak Crawley hitting a four. Through the sparsely populated covers.
Absolute gold.
If you look at things from Broad's perspective, it's not such a big call. It certainly beats some magical England Ashes first over moments of yesteryear, like Harmison's mega-wide or Starc ripping out Burns' leg stump. So yeah, some plodder smacking a loosener to the fence would be a pretty big deal.

bit silly Robinson saying what he did, but hey it's an ashes tradition on both sides of the fence. Plus he did a childish send off..well the Union of bowlers who haven't done that before is a pretty small one.(Ive never liked bowlers doing it either)
So pretty surprised all the reaction to be honest

I know England lost, but they've come a long way from being not even remotely competitive in the last series, to actually being able to say they probably should have won it.
Not a big fan of the term bazball, but he's turned them from being so afraid of failure, to a competitive test side.
Plus they're playing cricket thats good to watch

Hopefully this continues

anyways just my opinion of course

The funny thing is, they've played really well over the last year+. Certainly much better than before. They seem to have the best mix of players and styles to help them perform. And yet they are so mentally fragile they need to go on with this crap.

Should just be: "We played well. It was very even. Kudos to the Aussies for getting through. This is clearly the style that gets the most out of our team. We think if we tighten up a few things we can get a different result."

Instead it's loonyville "Losing feels like winning and they only won because of how we played so we should get the credit".

Send offs are one thing; sends off to a bloke who never says boo on the field after he's made 140 and then being entirely unrepentant about it because another bloke who retired eleven years ago apparently used to do it are another thing altogether.

I don't like them at all and as you say it just looks really stupid after a guy has made 140
I know its fun to paint the other side as villians, but plenty of Australians ( and other nations of course) have done them , and at other undeserving batsmen too.

I think this has been over reported because thank god its been a declining part of test cricket for a while now

Ollie: Send offs are OK because Punter did it over a decade ago.

Also Ollie: Those racist and sexist tweets were over a decade ago, everyone needs to move on.
