- The planets look the same because they are, only a handful have been shown thus far. I believe this is to maintain as much mystery about the game as possible (a goal stated by the developers).

That video about the economy helped to alleviate some of my concerns simply with that small glimpse of the ice/foggy/whatever that was planet. It showed at least some variety to the planets.

I'm still hoping to find out how they are going to implement such a huge universe on the consoles with limited resources. I hope it's as big as they have said, but something tells me it won't be.

its nothing new its procedurally generated, morrowind did this years ago.
the only thing you need to manage is moving from one area to the next without crashing. once you can get two areas to load you get every area to load a space game this makes sense as you can use the distance between planets to load in the next.

the reason games don't utilise it more is because it does one thing and one thing only makes massive sandboxes.
the issue wont be the size the issue, neither will the difference between planets that's all easily solved in the code. The Issues will be the variety of missions and new content.

sure hundreds of planets Ok that's massive, its meaningless if every planet boils down to mine ore/kill the dinosaur. That is the huge task awaiting No Mans Sky and it is a huge task. Which is why most modern games avoid procedurally generated content. They claim its artistry and how they can make more unique encounters. But the truth is you can do this with generated content, it just requires a **** ton of work.

the hardware limitations will restrict just densely populated each area is and how many users it can handle in an area.
