No, i'm 15 lol. But i have played local footy since i was 6, and i have learned about good sportsmanship. I just think it's a bit unsportsmanlike.

The real problem here is the "politically correct bullshit" kids are fed relating to playing sport and how you should act towards the opposition. These comments are the end result of this garbage.

I have read a letter provided to parents by a school about acceptable behaviour, directed at both the parents and the participating students.
I nearly vomited when reading the expectations of students towards opposition, it definitely wasn't about sport.....more about a love fest, and the above comment is the outcome.

Our society is breading a bunch of soft ***** more intent on being nice than being winners.

when i read that in todays paper it nearly made me sick!! the guy obviously has no idea about sports at all! what an A Grade tool. I contemplated writing in to abuse him but didnt wanna waste my time.

19th man is a great idea and whoever he supports is just jealous his team never initiated such a thing.

OK then :) let me give you some advice from someone who has been watching the game for a few decades more than you*

1. Opponents shooting for goal: Since the dark ages, footy supporters have made as much noise as they can, including e.g. slapping the advertising hoardings on the fence, waving flags and banners behind the goal, booin etc, in an effort to distract the kicker. This is not "unsportsmanlike", it's part of the game - and as has been shown on this thread, part of most games.

See what the players on the mark do? Jumping around, waving their arms, trying to distract the guy? Same thing. Not "unsportsmanlike".

I ask again - what do you think the crowd should do? Sit there politely like the crowd at a tennis or golf match?

2. Booing umpires over every call, esp holding the ball: Once again, it's part of the game. Especially screaming "BAAAALLLL!" the instant an opposing player is tackled. :)

Admittedly and unfortunately, some people do take this too far. Personally I think continuing to go off at the umpire even after the replay has shown the decision to be correct, is just being a tool - and focusing too much on the umpires just destroys your own enjoyment of the game.

For me, I can scream "You are an out and out CHEAT!!!" in the heat of the game, and be quite capable of shaking the umpire's hand after the game. Unfortunately some people can't "step back over the line" in the same way that players can.

And if you think the Crows crowd has this all to themselves, remember that there aren't too many opposition supporters at our home games (including the games against Port :p ). Check out a telecast of an away game and look at the crowd shots. Some of them make us look like pussycats.

So I agree with you that some of the umpire abuse is over the top, but only some of it. "Unsportsmanlike"? Maybe, but - hey, don't let the modern. wishy washy politically correct nanny state teachers and others brainswash you too much :p

My kids (who are just a few years older than you) and I make jokes about my behaviour at the football, especially umpire attitude. That's IMHO the ay it should be - don't take it too seriously. By which I mean - don't take the game too seriously, and don't take the crowd behaviour too seriously either. It's just a game. All of it.

*Yes, I'm old enough to be your father, so listen to what I say!! :D

hmmm you show admirable restraint there Arrowman - there have been countless games as a supporter where had i been in the position of being close enough to shake the umpire's hand after the game.... I would instead have undoubtably decked him :D

It actually sounded like it was coming from an Adelaide supporter...I don't think a Port supporter would say that, because the whole thing came from that Port get half the crowd we get, yet they were louder than us.
But what's next? It's unsportsmanlike to not cheer when the other team gets a goal?
That person needs to go back and watch the Geelong vs Hawthorn game - when Jimmy Bartel had that kick after the siren to win the Cats the game, the Hawks supporters were going off their brain to try & distract him.

I agree...Port supporters are used to booing, jeering, foul language and sledging ..they do it to their own team the entire game.

Of course it's unsportsmanlike behaviour. Booing the opposition and cheering when they make mistakes fits the definition perfectly. That's never been in question.

But the crowd pays their money. We're allowed to be unsportsmanlike if we want to. We can yell, scream, shout, dance... whatever we want unless it is offensive or dangerous to those around us.

Unsportsmanlike behaviour from the crowd has been around forever and as others have pointed out exists in every other sport in every corner of the globe. The difference here though is that the unsportsmanlike behaviour has been organised and instigated by the club, rather than just being at the whim of the fans.

The only other example of this I can think of is basketball handing out those f***ing clappers to fans. And isn't that a treat.
