If Cain Cornes is very quiet, what about Gary Lyon? Others may have posted it, I haven’t yet seen it, but remember when he was loving us not doing so well in 2017 and would often say this ludicrous thing “I judge a premiership on the club’s ability to back it up the next year!” As if that has anything to do with the previous season in anyway at all. And as if Gary Lyons view on what is credible or not counts for anything. But by the way Gary, how is Melbourne’s premiership defence/hangover going?

Cowboy Neale has died too. We were just discussing him the other day …

The dirty prick enforcer Cowboy Neale is dead, should ask Stephen Boyle how much of a good bloke he was.

I think I brought him up dogwatch, not so much in discussion as disgust along the lines of Testekill's post.
If I posted what I really think of him, and there were deliberate incidents beyond the Boyle one, even if not as bad, I'd expect a permanent ban.
'Dirty prick' sums up his footy career.

I just went back and read an old BigFooty thread from December 2009 about the Boyle/Neale incident which was just before my consciousness of following FFC. That sounded like an act of pure cowardice and thuggery, but I haven’t seen it. And the BigFooty conversation was nearly as willing, brutal actually. Plugger and Mofra and a few others I recognise and some I don’t, going very hard, very funny actually. Bit of old school suburban tribalism coming out.

Hey Fresh, I posted some detail on this back on page 861-2, original hit was brutal and deliberate, and came a few weeks after another brutal and deliberate hit from a Saint nearly ended John Greening's life.

I won't go over the Greening stuff again, so this is the last part of a long post I made about St Kilda thuggery under Allan Jeans in 1972 for context of the Neale assault on Boyle:

I don't know that Boyle was a Jeans directive - unlikely as he wasn't a high profile player - just another thug in 99kg Neale courageously belting 18yo 71kg Boyle so hard he destroyed the sight in one of Boyle's eyes - coincidentally also in 1972. Jeans and his goons had a busy year...

Neale had a history of 'tough' on-field actions - where he'd hit or crash into unsuspecting victims. And as their respective physical attributes show above, he picked undersized targets. So when I hear his name, even in the past few days, I think of an onfield thug, not a footballer

Thanks GJ79. The history of our great game is important. It’s should always help underpin what we do as we move forward. The game is important because it transcends social classes and racial differences. And when two ‘icons’ die like Cowboy and Barass we need to know their history and whether we should admire them or not. What they do on the field is important so is what they do off the field. Barassi for me is a super legendary character, none higher in the game, and it is fitting the Bulldogs put out such a tweet yesterday. It doesn’t sound like Neale was to be admired or honoured, from our club anyway.

Somewhere in the post game discussion I predicted this very headline.

I know its only David King and he's beyond help.

But the lack of self awareness about the role that he and his colleges play in spooking sides to rush to re-sign or sack coaches on display is pretty staggering. It's funny that he's talking to Whately in the article but Whately isn't quoted at all. Which is odd given he mayve run a counter argument because Whately was one of the biggest Kenny boosters in the weeks leading to the re-signing.

It's always Heads I win. Tails you lose with these guys.

Then you have the likes of Wilson who
circles the wagons for months and months calling for Dew (and many others) to be sacked then when he is throws up her hands and pretends to have nothing to do with it.

I want Collingwood to win I don’t care. Another premiership for them doesn’t really matter

I never want Toby Greene and the Giants to win anything.
💯 this! Giants shouldn’t even exist, they are an insult to the league. Plastic, soulless corporation metastasised as a football club. Toby Greene is a flog and never makes eye contact with anyone so you know he’s an untrustworthy bugger. Apparently he’s studying a masters of international finance. Which means he’s probably going to end up exploiting Bangladeshi war orphans to shine his shoes while he fire potato guns at them to make them go faster. I don’t want GWS getting anywhere near a flag for at least 80 more years. If they and I are still around then I might allow it.

You were doing well until the last 4 words. 🙂

I read something about trade period and it mentioned James Jordan, and that he was an unused sub in the 2021 GF. Can that be right? How much of a d*ckhead of a coach do you need to be to keep the sub on the bench in a GF where you're 10 goals up in the fourth quarter? Don't you put him on late so he can play a few mins at least?

Another cross in the negative column for that coach and footy club.

It was solely injury sub at the time, but still would have been good to pick a guy who wasn’t the best out there and say he was subbed off with hamstring awareness.

OK, thanks for clarifying. Some mitigation there then, but yeah from memory there were quite a few "awareness" injuries that year and could've got him on for a few mins.

From memory, one of the Melbourne players did try to fake an injury in the 4th to get him on (maybe Harmes?)

Stephen Boyle was a PE teacher at my high school, he coached our footy team to the HS Shield GF.

He had eye issues, I knew he played for the dogs, but I didnt know why he had to give it up.

What did Neale do to him?

Basically Neale tried to seriously injure him, and succeeded.

Page 861 of this thread, I posted some articles from the time:

Our straight kicking Paul Hudson's dad Peter was also belted in the 1971 GF in which Hawthorn beat StKilda.
The smash to the side of Pete's head was a deliberate act to knock him out.
The resulting thuggery rendered Pete semi-conscious which stopped him from beating Pratt's 150 goals in a season.

On the bright side as far as we know Peter never had any long term effects.:)

Apparently Peter Hudson was also a very good boxer.

Can't help wondering how the Cowboy would've gone in the ring with Huddo...where you can't snipe, hide or king hit from behind.
