Redpath was a gentleman among a bunch of bogan thugs in that 74 series. Odd how the term Mankad came into being when Greg Chappell bailed an English batsman backing up without warning.
Agree with all you said about Ian Redpath. From all reports he was an excellent human being and cricketer. Post Test career there are reports about him working all jobs at his cricket club. No job was beneath him and he always put the club and young players first. Vale Redders.
Unrelated but regarding your mention of “Mankad “, I have never understood the angst caused. The rules are written down clearly for all to abide by. If the batsman thinks he is above the rules tough luck. I get the spirit of cricket thing but imo playing within the rules is also covered by the spirit of cricket.

The irony is that Redpath was bailed by Charlie Griffith in Adelaide in 1968. I've followed cricket avidly since I was 10 years old and seen a lot of poor behaviour creep in. When I played in England there was almost no back chat when you were at the crease. Our captain would tell you to pipe down if you so much as said a word. When I played a few games in Geelong, there were these young punks constantly making stupid remarks.

I grew up in the UK. Played a lot of cricket until my early 20’s. I didn’t know sledging was a thing until I came to Australia.

It’s our convict heritage. None of that “Oh, well played, old chap!” stuff in the colonies. 🙂

I am (not kidding) the only square leg umpire in our league (batting side provides square leg umpire) to have been sent off by the main umpire for getting in a scrap with the opposition’s Captain. Vale Redder’s.

Considering he is contracted for 3 more years tacking on another 6 seems excessive but one less OOC to worry about.

Hayden Young has the potential to be the best player in the comp imo. His kicking is genuinely unbelievable.

Yes, he's a top level player, and I understand the desire and attraction you lock him down long term, esp likely less p.a. now than after the new broadcast deal. But 9 years is a hell of a long time for commitment on the club side. Similar to Naughton until 2032. I see the parameters were probably set if he was fielding huge offers from elsewhere (Naughton I mean, I don't know what offers Young is/was getting to likely return to Vic), but a lot can change in a player's career in those time frames... for better or worse.

Anyway, I'm not a list manager, so just have to trust Sam Power and whoever has replaced Bell at Freo know what they're doing. 🙂

I don't think a long contract means all that much any more. Yes it gives the player some security but not the club. If the player changes his mind or gets a better offer along the way he just asks for a trade, contract or no contract. Nine times out of ten the trade gets done and everybody moves on.
