I'm assuming, this replaces the premiership medal .....not sure about 1 game being the criteria ....you could simply be giving a rookie a taste of AFL, and suddenly they have a premiership ring

IMO ....half a season seems a reasonable contribution to a premiership season .....12 games min
Requirement should be playing in at least 1 win not as the sub

I doubt there’d be many rookies getting ‘tastes of AFL’ in premiership-winning sides, so wouldn’t be too much of an issue. Players get a ring in the NBA even if they’ve played one game out of 82

I would’ve assumed you’d keep the medal for the GF players still, though? Have something special for those who played on the day, while the ring is more a reward for general contribution over the year

Might cost too much to produce all that, though. 50k per ring does seem ludicrous

what about if someone plays less than 10 but makes a finals appearance? Perhaps 1 or more finals appearances also gets a ring regardless of H&A games played..?
That sounds good too

Yeah I like this, but take out the sub part. If, say, we went on to be premiers this year (obviously just a hypothetical), and Berry couldn’t crack back into the side, that means he wouldn’t get a ring, even though he kicked the match-winning goal against a high quality opponent

How many Rookies have COLL blooded this year ? ......think it's 3 ....Charlie Dean played 1 game if you don't include R0, then was dropped & probably never to be seen again

Should he get a Premiership Ring .....seems to tarnish the prestige of the ring, if these types are getting rings

Fair point, I like Scorpus’ idea of those that played in wins. Anyone that contributed to success

In that case, if the Pies won the flag, Dean wouldn’t get one

What if they played one game as sub, in a prelim, kicked the winning goal, get injured?

It’s all a bit silly. Either hand one to the entire squad or not. There will be some hard luck stories, like the bloke who plays every game but the gf. Some will be participation awards.

I’d still have medals for the gf team.

Special medals for shape keepers

BBQ shape shaped medallions.

Gold medals, the red bits are diamond.

Glorious.
Keep the pizza shape medallions for the good players, bbq shape medallions to the shape keepers, scrubbers and those that play under 5 games for the years.

Exactly. And what about the assistant coaches, physios and water boys? They all contributed too.

Spare the bullshit. You either played on grand final day and won, or you didn't. Hard luck stories are part of sport and make a premiership more valuable.

The medals by themselves are meaningless.

They're a symbol that you played in a premiership win. That symbol could be a ring, a pin, a badge, a trophy, whatever. Makes no difference. The "played in a premiership" bit is the important thing. That's what they mean.

Oprah-ing out a bunch of symbols without meaning to players who didn't play in a premiership would be completely pointless imho.

It's okay that there are hardluck stories.

The argument about draws is similar. No one knows how to feel... that's okay.

Am I the only one who likes this idea? Nice relevant way to still reward those who don’t play on GF day. Never liked the idea of ‘everyone gets a premiership medal’, myself
Players that play at least 1 game in the season deserve a medal imho... Just like players that played every game except the grand final also deserve a medal...

Had this rule been in place last year, Jakob Ryan, Josh Carmichael, Trent Bianco, Will Kelly, Trey Ruscoe and Tom Wilson all would have been awarded premiership medallions ?? You wouldn't be able to pick most of those blokes out of a crowd. The medallion needs to have prestige. Otherwise, as an average footy fan you'd likely be able to pick one up on ebay for a few hundred bucks in a few years time. I'm firmly in the camp where only premiership players are awarded a GF medallion. Society as a whole has sadly adopted the trophies for everyone mentality, the AFL does not need to follow down this path.

I have never been a fan of only giving premiership medals to the 22 on the day.

The fact that Mods played 25 out of 26 games and kicked 84 goals and didnt get a medal, whilst Aaron Keating played 3 games and had 7 possessions in 1997 and he got one is a travesty.

Its a team sport. Premiership Medallions should go to the entire list.

You're either a premiership player or you're not. If you didn't play in the Grand Final, you aren't a premiership player. No fancy ring or certificate of achievement is going to change that.

Many moons ago, after 4 different grand final losses I got dropped to 12th man for the first Grand Final my cricket club won in over a decade. I received a medal but it's packed away in a drawer somewhere. Ungrateful? Maybe. But all I did that day was sit in the stands and watch 11 blokes win a flag just like every other spectator. I wasn't a part of that moment. No matter how many medals, rings or plaques would've got presented.

Keep the medals for premiership players.

As 12th man you generally are part of the team.

No sub fielding? Running drinks or gloves out?

I hate the idea of a ring. That is a US tradition.

As someone who sat on the bench for a whole game in a grandfinal even though I played every game of the season I got a medal as I was on the score card but I know in my heart I didn't deserve it because I didn't play and it's an awful hollow feeling when everyones celebrating and you feel guttered because the coach didn't trust you enough to put you on.

Only people who play in the GF should get a medal
