What's been overlooked is that dress up parties are stupid and only the dumbest people alive confuse them with fun

Hopefully this is a step forward in eradicating them completely

They are fine. Clearly the AfL want to use them for political grandstanding though. In this case it was a dumb decision by the umpire because it was a person of a different race. The AFL had no where to go. But the question is, why does he get 1 week and the GWS player got 4? complete double standard.

Media release was careful to include “no skits were performed” which appears to have been the major issue afl had with the gws players

So you can be racist but do no skit and its ok but be funny with an asshat of an ex rugby player and the AFL get their asshairs in a knot. Its horrendous as to the double standards. This is why the AFL is the laughing stock of professional sport. Its a joke protected by those only interested in self interest.

Hang on. So we're thinking this is a racism/cultural appropriation issue moreso than being a terrorism/public enemy number 1 issue?

Buck me I'm outta touch.

So a Martin Bryant costume would have been... okay?

Can't fathom why we are all so easily offended
"We" are not
All it ever takes is one person to decide to bring something like that to the surface, by sharing with someone in the media, or for the media to pick up on something and run with it. It's then 'news' and we are all expected to go along like sheep and punish, cancel and shame the 'culprit'. If you don't get out your torch or pitchfork, and join the mob, you are racist / sexist etc and also require cancelling.

Haha yeah I've always thought this. I guess they lose some of that time in their life where you act stupid at parties and maybe they want to make up for it.

I don't really see the problem. Just take heaps of coke and drink yourself silly, but wear normal clothes. The AFL will be fine with that.

It's not costume parties that are the problem. It's using it as an outlet to be unfunny edgelords. Like you couldn't just come as superman or whatever.

Jarryd Lyons in the sub vest. That's a great costume. Low effort, a little bit of edgy humour built into it but he's not copping a 20 thousand dollar fine. You want to take stuff like that away because some blokes from GWS don't understand subtlety? **** off with that.

GWS are probably a bit of a victim of their own success, in terms of getting laughs from their various social media gags.

If you're always pushing to be funny and edgy, then you will inevitably go too far and overstep the mark.

Like when Glenelg supporters try to poke fun at supporters of more successful clubs.
