Halloween isnt strictly American. They're raising American children.
Better stop celebrating Christmas as well I guess, unless of course you're deeply religious

Halloween isnt strictly American. They're raising American children.
Halloween isn't strictly American - but the practice of dressing up in costume & walking around the neighbourhood begging for sugary treats (trick or treat) most certainly is. It's this practice which many find objectionable, and an unwelcome intrusion of American culture into Australia (and elsewhere).Halloween isnt strictly American.

Agreed. It's like that Seinfeld bit. It's not costume parties that are the problem. It's using it as an outlet to be unfunny edgelords. Like you couldn't just come as superman or whatever.
Its harmless fun (IMO)Halloween isn't strictly American - but the practice of dressing up in costume & walking around the neighbourhood begging for sugary treats (trick or treat) most certainly is. And stop watching American movies and TV shows and listening to American music.Halloween isnt strictly American.

Sometimes stuff just ages out and people get mad when the things they liked in their formative years isn't cool anymore. It's not enough to like something, they get validation out of knowing that other people like it too and anything that contradicts that notion is going to piss them off. I'm sure one day Simpsons memes will be like cave drawings and I'll be complaining that the world has gone to hell because some teenager doesn't appreciate my shit.Agreed. It's like that Seinfeld bit.
"It offends you as a jew?"
"No it offends me as a comedian!"
It's just braindead, tone deaf, edgelord shit. People often confuse bad taste with humour. Humour isn't dying, if anything now we just have higher standards than "It's funny because it's so wrong" type humour that 14 year olds in 2002 would've found funny.
it’s been a longtime celebration for Australians of Scottish/Celtic descent descent (not meaning fans of that distasteful Irish Catholic Glasgow football team).Costume parties are great. It's Australians doing Halloween that pisses me off.
Do you keep to yourselves with this or annoy other people?it’s been a longtime celebration for Australians of Scottish/Celtic descent descent (not meaning fans of that distasteful Irish Catholic Glasgow football team).
It’s all associated with the harvest, end of summer, ghosts of the dead walking among us on the night of 31 Oct, with big bonfires to scare away evil spirits.
Well, most of us also do Christmas and that's from the middle east! They're raising American children.
And stop watching American movies and TV shows and listening to American music.
I just throw west end cans out the front and no one comes to the door. EasyCountries I mean.
Not into it myself but im happy to load up on chocolate and hope nobody knocks on the door.
Why is it bad parenting ?? Kids dressing up and having a bit of fun.
Pretty long bow to draw there, bad parents are bad parents regardless of Halloween. It's bad parenting when those parents can't do simple things like make sure their kids don't run out into the middle of busy streets. It was crazy in my suburb, just cause it was Halloween people lost all sense of common sense. My daughter had to get two kids who we didn't know off the street near our house before they got hit.
Jetty Rd Brighton was crazy - especially around the railway lineIt's bad parenting when those parents can't do simple things like make sure their kids don't run out into the middle of busy streets. That area near the crossing can be pretty bad in general. The shops don't start there but people act like they do.Jetty Rd Brighton was crazy - especially around the railway line
I nearly cleaned up a father and 2 kids who stepped onto the road while I was driving 80% blind while trying to avoid the setting sun , looking out for side entry cars and heaps of adults and kids around
The setting sun just makes it a lotteryThat area near the crossing can be pretty bad in general. The shops don't start there but people act like they do.

No .. that clearly would've missed the brief of the time period for the costumeSo a Martin Bryant costume would have been... okay?
Surely you understand not everyone is putting in those necessary guard rails. You think every parent has adopted your set of rules? It sounds like you have that shit down to a science but not everyone does. The idea that I should deprive my children the joy of dressing up, not to mention the exercise of going for a long walk around our neighbourhood, just because it's "American" is ridiculous. The accepted rule is that you only knock on houses that have Halloween decorations out, so nobody gets trick-or-treated that doesn't want to be. And as for the sugar high, the kids get to enjoy 2-3 lollies max on the night and the rest go into a container in the cupboard to be dolled out in appropriate portions over the next month or two. It's one of the highlights of my kids' years, and it's also a great way of meeting other young families in your local area.
Anybody who has a problem with that needs to find something more important in their life to get upset over.
In our area they seem to as well, which is nice.Surely you understand not everyone is putting in those necessary guard rails. You think every parent has adopted your set of rules? It sounds like you have that shit down to a science but not everyone does.
I think it bothers me partly because it wasn't how things operated when I was a kid. There was definitely some Americanisation going on here during the 90s. Michael Jordan was everywhere. Rap and Hip Hop became popular. California culture of skateboards and roller blades was a thing. We were always importing their stuff but there is something about adopting their customs and rituals that just feels like it's gone to a new level. In our area they seem to as well, which is nice.
Perhaps if it wasn't so organised id hold a similar opinion to yours.
