The fundamental problem with the league, in my mind, is the concentration of power in Victoria for historical reasons. It's unsolvable.

1. There isn't enough money in the game to make moving to poorer performing clubs attractive (e.g. NBA and NFL teams can attract free agents with multi million dollar offers; the differences in salary here are not enough).
2. National media concentration in Victoria means more opportunity for outside earnings (media, sponsorships, coteries, etc) for larger Vic clubs (see Dangerfield, the Riewoldts, Jordan Lewis, etc being all over national media, Dusty Bonds sponsorship, etc.)
3. As such, the salary cap is not functional as an equaliser (see Bowes), because players will take less for some clubs than others.
4. The ability of players to veto trades, and fully guaranteed contracts gives all power to the players, meaning losing resources for less than their worth.
5. The draft is not big enough or valuable enough compared to squad sizes to make a substantive different to performance - you need to nail picks repeatedly and never lose any, which is very hard to do, in order to become a contender.

Geelong has spectacularly managed all these factors in a huge advantage, and good on them.
Yep, the fundamental issue is that the league is an expanded VFL.

We joined their league.

Will never change and the power base for coaching/players/admin will always be in Victoria.

No other professional sports league on the world has such a concentration in one city.

I think Joe's thing was that he - Joe - would not attend matches on a Saturday, not that he would force / require anyone else to do the same. Even if he was massively fundamentalist / orthodox or whatever, that wouldn't necessarily change.
That was my understanding also

It’s insane that someone like Giants football boss Jason McCartney uses the phrase ‘interstate club’ even though he’s been at GWS for years.

It’s “non-Victorian”, ya clowns.

Then they are FAs after 2 years when the initial contract ends.

If we have FA compo, I think it needs to be a publicly available criteria, but based on the best offer the initial club has tabled before (say) round 18. That way we know the club wants the player and isn't manipulating the system, but they are compensated for how big they value the player, now how another club values the player.
The main problem is strong clubs getting the best mature (and therefore proven) players for cheap. They get them for cheap through:

1. FA, where they pay zero in draft capital (whereas the original clubs that drafted them spent big in draft capital to get them)
2. Whether FA or trade they get free development (feeder clubs get the lower performance early years while the strong clubs go straight to the peak years, which means they have less inexperienced and developing players on the field each week, and thereby remain competitive)
3. Paying them less, because players take pay cuts to play at stronger clubs.

By contrast, weaker teams have to take risks by punting on the draft, where for every Franklin there’s a three or four Tamblings. They also have to field weaker teams, because they need to develop their inexperienced but promising kids. Then they lose all that, for risky inadequate draft compo, and start all over again.

I can’t see how to fix equalization, in a world where FA and trading exists, without:

1. Serious salary cap relief to weaker clubs, so that the discounts strong clubs manage to pay look even less attractive AND/OR

2. Making clubs who receive FA players pay for them in draft picks. The draft points system might work. If you want to get a player through FA, you can, but you have to pay.

And before anyone says “that not FA” - remember the “free” in FA doesn’t mean the club gets the player for free, it means the player is free to move to a club of their choice. Free agency doesn’t HAVE to mean a freebie for the receiving club.

Giants now have 3, 12, 15, 18 and 19 this year.

Assume they will be moving a few of those to next year.

Do we back ourselves to improve and take 12 15 and 18 off them for our next years 1st and 23?..

We’ll throw another sweetner in for good measure..

Although.. we most likely wont have the list spots to use them!..

I wouldn't trade our first next year for anything worse than a top 5 pick this year. We need elite talent in our side, not a split of later picks

Spotted. Ben Rutten kick pushing a razor scooter on Glenelg South esplanade before 7am.:)
Weight of the world off his shoulders. Good on that man.
